I completely agree. He possesses the skills and reactions necessary to be a top player, but he wants to win in his own flashy way, or he'll die trying. He's not willing to change up his own team synergy and matchup strategy in order to win tough matchups, such as ChrisG's effective zoning team, and therefore he doesn't win many tournaments, but he always places high. Imagine if he was willing to do whatever it took to win tournaments by being a bit more flexible, he'd be a beast.
As far as Gootecks goes, he's respected because of the kind of hard work that he puts into the community. While he is somewhat respected as a player in the 3s community, he's more known for his on-screen persona and dedication to make the FGC bigger than what it used to be.
Look it up on RU-vid. but the intro video to the whole game when it came out was to introduce all the characters in a movie form. and the last thing in the video was magneto standing/ gravity squeezing galactus. it was a pretty sick video. i bet you can still find the full version of it.
Some people will only respect players who win, not everyone. There's a big portion of people that seem to hate chris g's umvc3 team with a passion, but no one's able to topple him in curleh mustache yet. I myself greatly enjoy watching marlinpie's insane c.viper pressure, even though he hasn't won anything big lately. Gootecks also seems to have a big following in the fgc that respects him as a player, even though he hasn't really entered any big tourneys I believe. Different strokes
For the first time in my Mahvel career, I have been grabbed out of an XF grab punish. Man, it makes you feel so defeated too. It was the same one Champ got caught from by Marlinpie when Marlin did a j.M with Doctor Doom on Champs incoming Magneto, then Champ XF'd and tried to grab to be grabbed instead.
Bumbleness Supreme Brady If you X-Factor cancel your block and the person is next to you, you can get grabbed and you can't tech it. Marlin did the jump medium so that if champ x-factored he could still input forward heavy (foot dive) but if you x-factor you're able to get grabbed so foot dive becomes grab because you're not in block stun anymore. It's anti-x-factor tech
Anyone know what the inputs are to Joker's superjump H confirm? I know he does sj.H sj. down H, air dash down, sj. H, land, j. up H..... after that I'm not sure what he's doing
People hate Chris G's team because it's amazingly effective. It's a strong zoning game that might look boring to spectators, but effectively shuts down a majority of other player's ability to perform mix-ups and pressure. It goes totally against what Marvel fans enjoy about the game, but it nets him consistent wins because of it. It just goes to prove how a fundamentally-rooted player is able to beat players that rely on memorized set patterns, high-reward mixups, and extensive combos.
what about speed chess players? any game where two people weigh their tools and options against the opponent's can be compared to chess. I do believe mvc3 isn't as deep, but it's still there - mostly during the neutral and reset game, and incoming mixups. They have to think on how best to apply their next pressure option or how best to counter the opponent's pressure options within a split second. Spacing, pressure, manipulating/conditioning, anticipating, all those are in chess and fg's
Speaking of Chris G...he was the one that really put Ryu on the map with his Ryu/Ammy/Wesker team. But we'll just ignore how good of a player his was when he wasn't rocking Morrigan.
My favorite player by far is MarlinPie. I feel as far as execution and skill go, he's definitely one of if not THE best player. I think the thing that holds him back the most, is he's too stubborn and refuses to adjust his playstyle or team for certain matchups. You HAVE to switch your team to counter ChrisG, and you need to switch your playstyle against certain setups. If he would realize this, he'd easily be taking tourney's again.
"oh, that ryu rush down right now. ashy foot right here... his foot must be so ashy right now. all that walking on the floor." haha justin wongs pretty funny.
all i'm saying is that it involves a lot of strategy like chess, if this game is as random as you say it is, how come there are a lot of players that place consistently place in tourneys?
Joker has good combos and I think he has a sick Iron man, but I think people call him "Choker" because he fails to win when it matters. Like the Money Match with Jwong, Bee, and this Exhibition. He was up 4-1 in this one but then blew the lead.
For 99.5% of the fighting game community, this isn't a livelihood. That doesn't mean we don't want to do our best in tournaments and win by any legal means necessary. As far as enjoyment goes, you can enjoy any player that you like. But at the end of the day, people will only respect the players who win tournaments, and not the ones who look cool.
@Crazycuban561 yes but boring wins so that's all that matters. You can do the most sickest stylish combo there is but if you still get bodied it doesn't matter.
Holy crap... best Ryu ever! I wish I was as good. I like Ryu in this game. My Team is kinda meh Morrigan, Ryu, Nemesis. But to be honest, I suck. But that's okay, it's not like play/train a lot and I don't have people to play against... xD
That's the point, if he forced him to harddrive he would've been out of meter, and then it would've just been a chip game for him. Shoulda done it, and as is made obvious by the rest of the following matches, he definitely learned his lesson.
I liked champ for a moment. The way he plays is cool (that dormammu of his is godlike). But after seeing some videos about him, I totally changed my opinion about him. What I mean is that I think that there are more reason to disrespect him than to respect him.
32:12 that was a huge mistake. He shouldn't have mashed out GS. He should have saved the damage scaling for the hard tag. So Sentinel would have easily killed without meter.
Yeah, you also notice the only people who disrespect his style of play or strangely enough, him as a person, are stream monsters, youtube commenters, and all of the like. No player within the FGC shit talks Chris or say anything like the peons do. That's because while it's very difficult to best him in any set, they realize that he invented that strategy and has been developing it to near perfection.
Go look at twitter. MarlinPie, Justin Wong, and a handful of others blasted him on it. MarlinPie said during an interview that he doesn't use Ammy point against him because he wants to disrespect ChrisG without her.
dude, if you know anything about this game you need more than combos to be a great player. You have to be well rounded. There's offense, defense, incoming setups, crossups, ambiguous cross ups, guard breaks, fuzzies, throws, air throws, randoms, unblockable setups, zoning, tac infinites, etc.. I swear, this game is almost as complex as high level chess.
