I have that killjoy party too where the cleric whines if I do anything she thinks is shady. Summoning demons and devils included

Thanks for sharing your experiences and thought process on your build. I find the Wall of Stone thing quite surprising as well, I would never had thought of such issues until you mentioned them.

Just found your page, which is surprising because I love optimization. It's great and I've subscribed. Perfect timing, too, because next week I'm starting a campaign at level 3 and plan on playing a pure daolock. I caught your build video just in time to make a few changes.

I love shadowspawn too. i use the despair spawn with difficult terrain and prone effect to lock enemies in place (and in prone sometimes). wall of stone i really like on sorcs due to quicken spell. for major threats on the field i like to distant shocking grasp/tashas mind whip the enemy then just entomb the bbeg in a wall of stone as we deal with other enemies in the field, then once we're ready i drop wall of stone and we unload the bbeg. also worked great with a celestial warlock in the party who picked up ghostly gaze and just pretty much killed the bbeg with sacred flame while i kept up wall of stone and the other party members just patched each other up and continued with investigating the area. i still use minor illusion as well in tier 2 and tier 3. agreed. one of the best cantrips in the game. i still use it as a non-concentration way to generate obscurement (metal/stone box structure with opening for spells to pass through like arrow slits) when i dont want to spend a spell slot on pyrotechnics and a feat on blindfighting.

I think it is a community oversight to let sacred flame work with ghostly gaze. Spellcasting rules require no cover. When sacred flame talks about cover in the description, it is next to the dex save and thus should be interpreted to mean +2 or +5 to dex saves you get from being behind half or 3/4 cover. It isn't in reference to the casting criteria description.

@@jrg305 it's not a community oversight. JC specifically called out sacred flame to ignore cover, work through wall of force, etc. my guess is you misunderstood it. I'll share 1 of the relevant texts below and you can google the podcast if you want: "There are spells that create exceptions to this rule about needing a path clear of obstruction. One cantrip that I think many cleric players don't realize is breaking this rule is sacred flame. Sacred flame is one of the low level spells that, that has this text, 'the target gains no benefit from cover from this saving throw' ... that includes total cover... sacred flame can be cast on the other side of a wall of force" - Jeremy Crawford

@@TheRobversion1 Jeremy has made other senseless rulings and this contradicts spellcasting rules; perhaps he should have other people work for him who pay more attention to details. This game is full of stuff like this. This game should have a separate part of spells that highlight how it breaks other rules. Anyhow I yield. I can see how the specific overrides general here.

@@jrg305 on this we agree. like mounted combat and controlled mounts meaning separate turns but same initiative. yuck. i think one big flaw of alot of 5e rules is they rely alot on DMs to adjudicate. what this fails to take into account are 2 things: 1. players and dms won't always agree. there are alot of player who are dms themselves or simply know the rules more than the dm. 2. dnd is not played or discussed at a single table. it is discussed over thousands of tables, online, etc. there needs to be someone like JC who just gives an overall correct interpretation of rules or ruling on interactions because the way 1 DM might rule something may not be the way another would and these stuff dominate alot of online/water cooler conversations about dnd. this way people can just settle discussions by having an authority they can always refer to when the books are unclear.

@@TheRobversion1 yes and a lot of DM rule in ways that take away player agency and creativity out of fear of loss of control. If it happens enough or pushes down the clay of my character enough that I can't recognize it, I leave.

I love Conjure Fey, I'm playing a level 11 wildfire druid right now and I have been spamming it like crazy, can't wait to level 13 when I can cast it with a 7th level slot and get a Bheur hag, also planar binding is going to be sick if I can get a coven of them.

*Sigh* - again troubles with summoning a fiend. I don't get it why so many players and DMs are against it. From a flavor perspective, I am wondering if summoning a Shadow Spawn can be considered a good deed. Not much difference IMO. Albeit, they don't seem to complain about this summon spell... Anyway, nice analysis 👍 Oh, and I like how you referred to the Lucky feat. Was it: Fortune smiles upon the unlucky - if they have Lucky? 😆

What is your to hit bonus? +9? have you thought about getting a clockwork amulet? once per day you can make an attack roll a 10+ your to hit so you have a guaranteed 19 in important situations and its only a common magic item non attunement so you can have multiples, although as you said they only allow a max of 2 of the same item, but it might be worth it.

I've got to say I'm surprised Wall of Stone is causing that much turmoil. Are there just no Wizards on that server? I would be pretty disappointed in a DM if they're planning sessions for 11th level players but haven't thought about how to properly (without throwing bs at players) deal with walling spells like Wall of Stone/Force.

I wonder at which point this build peaks relative to other optimized builds. At 11 the wizard and gishes are going to start coming online and start to really dictate encounters.

Not sure if you'll see this but what campaign system are you playing in that allows such extensive respecs each level? Just curious.

Does Insignia of the Claw effect summons?

Yes, its non-attunement so you can just hand it off to them as an item interaction.

Listening to this again, I think your DM isn't running Conjure Fey correctly. You don't get to choose the Fey. Just like conjure elemental, you don't get to choose the elemental either. Both are DM choices. The wording in summon greater demon is explicit where you can choose the type.
