The small animations for *every* character really add a ton of life to them. Minimalistically amazing. :D

Heck yes, this game HAS to be one of the most forgotten major label releases of the era. Every time I find myself mentioning it (usually in the context of like "were there ANY easy CRPGs back in those days?" I think to myself how I have not heard anyone talk about it since the last time I mentioned it, haha

those were such good times. getting home from school and playing games til the guys started showing up... 89 was my last year of high school, unfortunately...

That looks like a game I'd have liked to played back then and have in my collection today. The lack of any sound is troublesome but I could probably deal. 👍

I love the Ultima games and was aware of most Origin games, but I had never heard of this one!

Great review! Another hidden gem I might have to give a try. I always feel some regret regarding RPG's on the C64. Apart from Buck Rogers and in a wider sense Starflight where I put in many hours I barely had or played any RPG's and only really got into the genre on PC and SNES. This series is great to find games that I missed out on.

I loved this game, especially the pamphlet that gave the back story as to what you're doing there and why. The artwork was really good in it and I like how they were able to translate it so well onto the screen. While this game wasn't too hard, it was amazing how you screw up your own playthrough with poor decisions and make it virtually unwinnable due to your own mistakes, not because it was too hard overall. I liked that. There was no true game over, I guess you could have won the game after a critical failure, but it was often easier to restart and try something else.. at least in the early game.

I blame Zork for this: how did our culture develop the assumption that a medieval dungeon was a vast "underground kingdom", instead of being a few cramped prison cells?

This is one I didn't get to play back then, I had only just got a disk drive and wasn't into RPGs. It looks great, but a real shame there is no sound.

Not sure if I played this one or not. I'm going to give it a go. Times of Lore is certainly pretty great. Have you had the chance to play SKALD, a recent PC release? I picked it up on GOG. It's an absolutely fantastic turn based RPG, with C64 aesthetics, but done in that rose tinted glasses way where it looks like what you remember C64 games looking like rather than what they actually looked like. It's still very pixelated, but is done in a high enough resolution that it is still legible on a bigger screen. I've been playing on a 32 inch monitor and it looks great.

What's the music that starts playing at around the 1 minute mark?

Not really my cup of tea, but enjoyable content as always. I'm always open to trying one on emulation or android [just no p2w mechanics. Id sooner just buy a game than screw about with that! Lol]
