This is an example of what is called a “monkey trap” In Buddhist and Hindu martial arts. The monkey represents the mind. The mind attaches to things and does not want to let go. Although the opponent is not physically trapped the cognitive effort required to release the weapon causes them to lose a beat of action. It is frequently seen in techniques that use wrapping motions such as under-hooks and over-hooks.
