I just bought this! I have sony a7iii I was using the kit lens and now with this I'm am so so happy. Its sharp and super wide to capture everything I need. I mainly shoot dance videos of big groups in tight spaces and sometimes with little to no light and with some assisted lights this is perfect

Agreed 100% Have both the 17-28 & the 28-75. Both work great and the lighter weight and size does make all the difference. Can’t wait for the 70-180 2.8 from Tamron to complete the trinity. Imagine the parallax gimbal shots at 180mm! It’s going to look amazing!

The lens is really magical, so much smaller than any other UWA zoom, the 28-75 was great, the 17-28, despite the seemingling short range, it feels dramatic enough and that size and weight is a darn game changer. For reference, I've owned so many UWA, searching for the pot of gold, and this is it. 14-24 f2.8, 12-24G (still own), 16-35f4L, 16-35f4ZA, and a bunch of primes. it's not perfect, but damn close to it.

Dan I think the centre of gravity does shift. Although the lens does not extend, the positions of the focusing element should be sufficient to induce a shift in the centre of gravity of the lens, though perhaps less significant when compared to an extending lens.
@BrewReview
@BrewReview 4 года назад
Lau Tuck Yan it definitely does, many reviewers think because the barrel doesn’t extend physically that it doesn’t shift weight, however those elements need to go somewhere. I think what they really mean (and should state) is that gimbals will be able to better compensate in this scenario vs. a long, extended barrel that supports the giant front element.

Dan, I now find myself in the wide angle market for Sony to replace my battis 18 2.8. I'm looking for something more versatlie and good for both real estate as well as travel for tight cities and landsacapes. Astro capabilities are a plus as I want to start that but haven't yet. Have you tried the new Sigma 14-24 Art for Sony yet? I've boiled it down to it and this Tamron. They each have pluses and minuses and choosing if proving difficult.
@learningcameras

Hey Dan great video as always, I’m considering an a7iv for event photography with a lens budget of about $3k, what lenses would you recommend?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 2 года назад
Hey! Thanks. So the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 is great as a general zoom and the 70-180mm F.2.8 should complete the long range. If you need something wide look at the Sony 20mm F1.8 or Sony 16-35 F4
@joshuachubbphotography
@joshuachubbphotography 2 года назад
@@learningcameras awesome thanks, I was looking at the 20mm 1.8. So you think it’s that worth it over the Tamron 17-28?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 2 года назад
@@joshuachubbphotography I personally use the 20mm quite a bit because I'm shooting in dark places and the wider aperture helps. But certainly it doesn't look very wide so if you want a super wide field of view, you need 17mm or wider
@TravisKelleher
@TravisKelleher Год назад
Hi Dan, I love your channel. I have a question for you. I'm seriously looking into purchasing this lens. I have the A7IV, if I shoot in 60p crop does the 17mm end on aps-c mode look similar to a 35mm? I'm wondering how people will look at 17mm while shooting 60p. For instance, watching a bride and groom walking down the aisle, would I have a fishy cropped look or would it look like 35mm in standard mode. Any information is greatly appreciated.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras Год назад
Hey! So the crop mode has a multiplier of 1.5x so it will make the 17mm look like a 25.5mm lens so a bit wider than 35 and closer to a 24mm. As far as the overall look, using a 17mm on a crop sensor will still usually have a bit more distortion than say a 25mm lens on a full frame camera would but overall it looks very similar.
@TravisKelleher
@TravisKelleher Год назад
@@learningcameras Thanks Dan, I'll be ordering one very soon. It looks like this lens is the best way to overcome the crop of the A7IV if you need a simi-wide FOV.

Thanks. I primarily intend to do cityscape videos, for that would you recommend the flexibility of 17-28 with f2.8 or 20mm but with f1.8. I bought a Sony A7lll with a Tamron28-75.. Your advise would be highly appreciated.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 3 года назад
So I would say if you already have the 28-75, I would just get the 20mm since you might want the wider aperture for some night videos. I really don't find I need a ton of flexibility with wide angle lenses as you could do a very small crop in post and turn that 20mm into a 24mm lens
@chiradeepg
@chiradeepg 3 года назад
@@learningcameras thanks for your advise, make sense.. Others were saying for wide angle lens very low f-stop is not required as depth of field is not that relevant but I guess we missed out on low light/ night photography..
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 3 года назад
@@chiradeepg well when shooting photos with a tripod, you can shoot crazy slow shutter speeds to get more light and not need the wider aperture but for video, you can't go below 1/50 so you either need to boost the iso or use a wide aperture prime. Since you mentioned doing video and sometimes you might want to shoot indoors or at night, I'd go with the prime. Hopefully that helps!
@chiradeepg
@chiradeepg 3 года назад
@@learningcameras thanks a lot, I understood your rationale.. Ya I will surely go for night shots too and I mostly do video shot.. I was just wondering whether 2.8 would be sufficient or not but I guess with 1.8, I would get more versatility in an even lower light situation.. Thanks again for your guidance..

Thanks for your review! Furthermore, could ask you guys who has this lens did you notice that the aperture is really loud and gives quite sick noise or just mine is faulty? I never felt/heard anything like this before from any lenses. Thanks in advance for the answers.

Thanks! So no, this lens was near silent for me. I don't have it anymore for comparison but I don't remember hearing anything. Sometimes when off lens elements can "float" around inside but even that is pretty silent. I'd be sending in an example of those sounds to Tamron
