Disney's magnificent animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs's story of the ape man begins deep within the jungle when baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas. Even though he is shunned as a "hairless wonder" by their leader, Tarzan is accepted by the gorillas and raised as one of their own. Together with his wisecracking ape buddy Terk and neurotic elephant pal Tantor, Tarzan learns how to "surf" and swing through the trees and survive in the animal kingdom. His "Two Worlds" collide with the arrival of humans, forcing Tarzan to choose between a "civilized" life with the beautiful Jane and the life he knows and loves with his gorilla family.

The significance of Tarzan killing sabor is the fact he unknowingly exacted revenge for not only himself but Kerchak as well, which is what earned Kerchak's respect.

Fun fact in the book Clayton was actually Tarzan’s birth surname, Tarzan’s mother was Alice Clayton and his father was John Clayton the 2nd, Tarzan (when found by Jane) was taken back to London where he discovered his real name was John Clayton the 3rd and kerchak’s second son Akoot took over the troop as dominant silver back.

The thing I like about Disney movies is that the villains almost always are really ultimately responsible for their own death. And it's normally because they refuse to give up on their selfish goals of greed, power, fame, and/or money. Basically like Gollum in Lord of the Rings. Their selfish goal, their version of the "precious" ultimately betrays them.

Agreed. It is kind of a Disney Trope that the "Hero" never actually kills, but I like it. It's nice to have a series of films where the hero is generally the unambiguous good guy. I also liked that, they really made Clayton a threat to Tarzan. He was the consummate hunter. He had honed his reflexes and perceptions to be able to pick out oddities and threats, and could hunt and fight with both gun and blade. He was able to traverse terrain, almost as well as Tarzan. He was like a dark reflection of Tarzan.

One thing that took me until years later to realize is that Tarzan's gorilla friend, Terk, is a very masculine female character. In the original books the film is based on, Terk was a male and was designed to be in the film until Rosie O'Donnell auditioned. Not sure why it took me so long to realize it as i believe they refer to Terk as she/her in the film, but young me managed to constantly miss it.

I was 8 or 9 when this movie came out. I remember seeing it in the theater and fell asleep. I had the unfortunate experience of waking up right as Clayton cut the vines. The way he died and the silhouette of him is something I’ve never forgotten. I probably didn’t re watch the movie for a couple years after that. Without the silhouette, it’s still a tough scene. It’s a horrible way to go, but unedited it was so much more morbid and dark. Not something I wish to see again. I do love this movie though!

One thing I love is when Tarzan can distinguish the leopards face in the brush, which is an evolutionary trait of our ancestors to help with that specific reason in mind, also why the gorillas cant see the face as quickly.

fun fact about the scene where clayton gives tarzan the wine but he doesn’t drink it: disney talked to the owners of the rights of the original story, and that was something they compromised on. it was ok for tarzan to hold it as long as he didn’t drink it. they considered that out of character or inappropriate i guess. i’ve never considered that it might’ve been poisoned but that’s an interesting reading of that scene! i always assumed he just didn’t drink it because it was foreign to him and he was preoccupied with the conversation and didn’t really want to try it right then.

There is 50 Tarzan movies in total, this one is the 47th, in the 20th century, right from the beginning of cinema, this was one of the most prolific saga for years, the author Edgar Rice Burroughs made one book, and was so popular, he made tons of sequels, and then they were comic books, movies, other books by other authors, it became as famous as Sherlock Holmes in terms of known characters. The rights of the franchise belong to Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. and so different studios can make their movies, not only Disney. *Tarzan and Jane* is a direct-to-DVD movie but is simply a compilation of 3 (of the worst) episodes of the show *The Legend of Tarzan* , a direct sequel to this movie like Disney loved to do in the 90s and 2000s, this series is ugly looking but is actually really great and adapts some storylines of the other novels, I'm a huge fan of any Tarzan content, this movie is probably the best ^^ By the way, the mix of 2D and 3D backgrounds makes this movies the most beautiful 2D animation movie in my opinion, every shot and every color is just beautiful...

Great movie. The animation is unique animation technique called “Deep Canvas”. This style coming back in style for sure. I feel this movie hits more with kids who were adopted or are in families where they don’t feel they belong. Being adopted the song “You’ll be in my heart” was helpful for me when I was a young child trying to bond with my adopted mother.

the music in this movie is so powerful and really gets the emotions across so well. phil collins was a perfect choice for the soundtrack. i always forget how good this movie is until i watch it again or see someone react to it. enjoyed your commentary as usual! :D i really recommend the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, i think you'd enjoy that one a lot. the score and soundtrack for it are absolutely incredible! you'll also definitely cry haha

I heard they actually used skateboarding to animate tarzen tree surfing. I thought that was cool to learn. And Phil Collins is the best.

You're right. Disney Channel use to have a show called The Movie Surfers where they'd show the audience behind the scenes of theatrical released films and all that cool stuff. I remembered for this one they'd show how they translated real life skateboarding and surfing to Tarzan's. They also used Tony Hawk in a lot of their promotional material as well.

Fun Fact: Tony Goldwyn (The voice of Tarzan) wasn't the one who provided the famous yell. It was actually Brian Blessed (The voice of Clayton).

I think this is like the 47th or 48th Tarzan movie; I think there are at least 50. Speaking of which, fun fact: Tarzan Of The Apes has the second most film and tv adaptations of any literary classic; the one with the most is Dracula.

You should check out Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron. It's a Dreamworks movie but has the emotion of a Disney movie. The entire soundtrack is done by Bryan Adam's. It's amazing!

This movie was how I fell in love with Phil Collin's music. I've grown up with this movie, and my mom noticed I loved singing his music. From there, I got to know him with his solo career as well as with his band Genesis. I saw Genesis for the first time on their farewell tour, and I'm glad that I got the chance to see one of my favorite singers live. I would play this movie a lot that my parents had to get me a second copy, not to mention the N64 and PC-Rom game of the movie too.

Ok watching this at 6:30 in the morning and had to do some research. The movie is based in the early 1900s (1900-1910), Clayton said that the gorillas are worth £300 per head. Giving an estimate of about 50 gorillas on screen, not including the babies, that makes £15,000 for all. £15,000 in todays money would be £1,752,600. Converted to USD: $2,354,488.41.

Feral children (children raised by animals) is a very real thing. There's been cases as recently as the 90s/2000s of children being found behaving like animals. It's usually a case of extreme abuse or neglect that causes the children to bond with animals and is actually really heartbreaking. Most of them can't ever live normal lives after they're rescued

If you're looking for movie suggestions: Chicken Run. A stop-motion animation that's a parody of WWII POW movies like The Great Escape and Stalag 17. But... with chickens.

I love most Disney films, but this one is kind of special to me. Disney took a different and darker, harsher take on death. Killing off an infant, as well as parents. It was the darker side of the Lion King's circle of life. Plus Clayton's death was, I think, the second most gruesome death in Disney animation. Scar, being torn apart alive, was still the first. But that silhouette of Clayton hanging is still such a dark image for Disney. Plus Tarzan is kind of unique in Disney pictures. He lost THREE parents, in the course of the film.
