Taste of Buddhism
"Be Your Own Therapist" with Ven. Robina Courtin
This talk was held at Tse Chen Ling Center for Tibetan Buddhist Studies as part of our weekly "Taste of Buddhism" program. It took place on July 28, 2019 from 10:30am-12pm.
We spend our lives being seduced by the outside world, believing completely that happiness and suffering come from “out there.” But if we look into our hearts we can see that this is not true, that the more we hold on to people and things and experiences, the more dissatisfied and lonely we become.
Happiness and suffering come from the way we perceive and interpret things, not the things themselves. At the heart of it, according to Buddhism, is the instinctive clinging to a limited sense of self, which causes us to respond with attachment, anger and the rest.
By becoming deeply familiar with the workings of our own minds and hearts we can begin to open up our marvelous potential for clarity, contentment, love and the other qualities that Buddha says are innate within us.
About Ven. Robina Courtin
Since being ordained as a Buddhist nun in the late 1970s, Ven. Robina has worked full-time for Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche's FPMT. Over the years she has served as editorial director of Wisdom Publications, editor of Mandala Magazine, executive director of Liberation Prison Project, and as a touring teacher of Buddhism. Her life and work with prisoners have been featured in the documentary films Chasing Buddha and Key to Freedom.

IMO it would have been better had you followed your first intuition when asked to comment and compare your grasp of Abhidarm Psychology with Western Pyschology and refrained from comment based on your relative ignorance of the multitude of schools of unresolved competing Psychological thought in the West. Dual Aspect Monist Neuropsychology for example views the organ of subjectivity to be the brain: to be a brain is to experience subjectivity; to observe a brain is to objectify another subject's organ mediated and filtered through one's own brain functions assisted by machines like fMRI, EEG, MRI etc. In fact one can NEVER KNOW the external World impinging on the senses and represented as something other than one's own unitary sentience. One can only feel something about that non-me out there beyond me reaching me as Sound, Taste, Smell, Form, Tangible object, Sight. Such impacts stir up in me chains of associated Instincts & Memories conscious or otherwise, and their associated Predictions about what behaviours in the broadest sense will best maintain my experience of going on being at and within a narrow range of environmental conditions that will continue to support my vital endogenous Homeostatic set point or Nirvanic equilibrium : a Sentient state of (embodied) bliss over and beyond the precision error correction engendered as my bodily, cognitive consciousness; i.e. a state of 'higher' luminous- yet empty- yet dynamic- '(non self)Consciousness'/Mind. The Brain mediates Sentience. Human sentience requires embodiment. Thus Human existence is said by the Buddha to be a precious achievement because it allows sentience to co-create itself and aim the arrow of one's lifetime(s) towards the target of Buddhahood along the Bodhisattva path. Perfect talk upto the Q&A...which was still good enough though slightly less Luminous than when you were simply repeating the Buddhas words in modern phrases. You have demonstrated samsara…how very full of yourself to speak so disrespectfully. I am sorry you cannot grasp why she teaches the way she does.

@@mrsmitchell6922 I am very sorry to read that you are upset Mrs Mitchell. Actually I find that Robyna is a very good Dharma teacher and in general I enjoy her fiery personality and passion because I have found in the few lectures I have watched that, in my opinion, she is usually a very accurate reflection of the message of His Holiness and the Karmapa. However I disagreed with her comments about The Science of Buddhist Psychology and The Buddha himself told us NOT to believe any teacher or teaching based upon faith or reputation alone but only when one has subjected the topic to reason and logic. I wish you a good day and continued Light upon your Path.
