The centre of Prague is one of the most beautiful parts of our capital city. If you take away all the tacky and cheap neon signs, stickers and banners of local shops. How is it possible that they can deface a historic site like this? That's what we've been focusing on in the Live Prague series.
Why do the shops in the centre of Prague look the way they do? One of the reasons is probably the owners' belief that the more garish the banners and neon signs, the more tourists they will attract. But if all the shops look like this, the effect may be exactly the opposite. The second reason is, of course, the cost - a window sticker costs a few hundred, a professional and well thought out window display tens of thousands.
Are there any rules that shops in the centre of Prague have to follow when decorating and attracting customers? Strangely enough, yes. Under the previous administration of the municipality, an elaborate and detailed manual was created, based on current regulations and translated into several languages. Unfortunately, its enforceability falls more into the realm of theory, as evidenced by the fact that nothing has changed in the centre. The traders and their lawyers have managed to find loopholes in the regulations and are exploiting them. How? We present the craziest examples in the video.
Do you think the shape of downtown will ever change for the better? And what do you think might contribute to that? Let us know in the comments.
Tasteless merchant advertising is not the worst of Prague's downtown. What do we think is the biggest shame? Take a look at one of our previous episodes: • Největší ostuda Prahy ...
Not to point only at the merchants and tourists, sometimes architects also get "stuck" in Prague. Which buildings did we call the ugliest in our video? See: • Tak tohle se nepovedlo...
But we don't want to be only negative. There are positive things in store for Prague this year. What can we look forward to and which of the changes have already been implemented? Watch our video: • Na co se můžeme v Praz...
