Taurus PT 22 review, A sub-compact .22 semi auto for personal protection

The Taurus PT-22 is a sub-compact semi auto .22lr pistol made for personal protection and for people with weakened hand strength. This little pistol has an 8 round magazine and a "tip up" barrel that eliminates the need to "Rack" the slide. The PT-22 is a direct blowback design with no extractor and does not have a traditional recoil spring and guide rod.

Perfect example of why you test the rounds you’re going to carry.

I agree, although the Winchester Silvertip and the Federal Punch 22 may be a good self defense round, they don't seem to work well in the PT-22. Thanks for watching Jesse B!

The reason that they so much resemble the Beretta is that the really are, or at least started out to be, a Beretta. The reason is that back in, I think, the 1980s, Beretta won a big contract to supply the Brazilian army with Beretta 92s (The original model with the thumb safety on the frame similar to a 1911). But they had to build them in a factory in Brazil with Brazilian workers and materials. "Taurus Forhas", or Taurus Forge, was sub-contracted to Beretta to provide the frame and slide forgings for the Brazilian contract. When Beretta fulfilled the terms of the contract, rather than just abandon the factory and put all of those people out of work, they offered Taurus Forhas the chance to buy the factory lock-stock-and barrel, as well as the full rights to build the Beretta firearms that were being built there, including the Beretta 92 and the Beretta 21. as well as some others. Beretta would receive a royalty payment for each gun produced. Taurus Forhas then became "Taurus Armas", or Taurus Arms. You still see the Taurus version of the 92 with the safety on the frame, while the Beretta version has the slide mounted decocker safety on the slide, as requested by the U.S. Army for their M9.

Great review . This is an interesting tool in my collection as I own 4 Taurus firearms 2 revolvers in 357 and a 380 . As my prosomal choice I run CCI blazer brass as practice ammo in everything I own as its a good baseline . I got this as a desk gun to keep in my house in case . But after taking it out to the range numerous times its become a tool that does well in any situation. Release the safety aim and shoot . Perfect for concealment and having something while going out in your neighborhood for a walk. Living in a vast urban city I feel safe with this . I as a rule run mini mags as I get the best results but I live the ergonomics and simplicity of this . Its very much a keeper in my rotation

I had one of these. HAD. It was the only new gun I ever returned to the factory, and it was so terrible that they couldn't fix it, and refused to send it back to me! (They let me get a new G2C instead for no additional cost.) It fired 10 inches to the right at 25 feet, and the non-adjustable sights made this a permanent handicap. It also had approximately 50% failures to feed, failures to eject, and "light strikes" that wouldn't fire the bullets. Other than that stuff, it was wonderful.

I use CCI Mini Mags in my PT22 Poly, identical to the one that you tested, and it has functioned 100%, with good accuracy. I have several magazines for mine, but with the slide so difficult to "rack", the likelihood of ever executing a reload from a fresh magazine is probably out of the question. I've actually only carried mine once for "serious" duty, and that was only last weekend when I had to venture into a less-than-savory part of a nearby city to attend a wedding. I carried it in an Uncle Mike's padded nylon size 1 pocket holster, but it still printed in the front pocket of my Dockers until a tucked a wadded up handkerchief to further obscure its outline.

Taurus bought a Beretta plant in Brazil hence the PT22 and the PT92. While the Taurus PT22 is similar to the Beretta Bobcat, the main difference is that the PT22 is DAO and the Bobcat is DASA also the mag release is in a different location. I have the older version of the PT22. Thanks for the video and keep shooting 😊.

I had a few of these from 13-10 years ago. All where very reliable (don’t know if new ones are). I have the beretta 21a. I say they are pretty close to equal, but everything seems just a little better on the beretta except the sights lol. I don’t think they are a bad choice. I say only try cci ammo, or federal punch when looking for carry ammo if that’s what it’s used for. Also as far as safety goes. I had a car pull out in front of my motorcycle while I was going 35mph. Ran straight into the side. Hit so hard you could see my body print in it. Had a pt22 in my pocket loaded. Nothing happened through hitting the car and bouncing over then flipping 5 times.

Good job on the video. Tip to all having trouble inserting magazine. You put too many rounds in the magazine! It easily accepts 9 but will not insert if you try it. I don't count when I load and found out the dumb way when I couldn't feed mag. Being the typical man and making it fit I knocked the top of the receiver out. Finally realized my error. So remember only 8 in the mag. Mine had tons of FTF and jams so I sent back to Taurus. They adjusted it but have not had chance to test out yet. Never heard people having problems with the Beretta's. As far a the Taurus, it seems that the vast majority of failures are caused by defective (out of spec) magazines. Seems that people have good success using an o-ring to fix the magazine issue. I guess the magazine is able to sit too high, because it doesn't seat (either with the magazine release of the base pad at the bottom)... so people place an o-ring on the body of the magazine and then slide it all the way down. Not sure about the best size/thickness of o-ring though. You can probably tell by inserting a magazine and seeing how much of a gap there is between the bottom of the grip and the top of the base plate of the magazine. Have heard that about 50% of magazines are/were out of spec. Sorry for the rant. Just thought you might want to know (if you don't already)... and if you still own any.

i like your video a couple of things this gun gets dirty really fast the chamber will foul in about 25 rounds worse if using cheap ammo. mini mags work the best they are not really mag rounds, 1260 fps the other issue is the mag its self. put a rubber oring on it and slide it down to the baseplate into the slight recess it will make it harder to seat the mag but will keep it in the right place for reliable feeding, have fun God bless

Probably, the slam fire seems to happen when the slide is "Dropped" or let close under the spring pressure at full speed. I have also watched a video where it double fired. These are famous for having mag issues. Some people say that a many 50% of magazines are (or were) defective. People have had success fixing them by adding an o-ring just above the magazine plate (round the magazine body and slid ll the way down). Apparently there's a gap that's not supposed to be there, so the magazine can get pushed up too high when you grip the gun to shoot it (can't shoot it without gripping it). Otherwise, they seem to be good, reliable guns once the magazine issues are fixed.

When I went on the 15th Jan 2023 to buy it, all of a sudden the price had jumped to 243US$, representing a hefty 21% increase for the same firearm - no extra features added. Same item. I reached out to Taurus to show them my disappointment ( how many of you have received a 21% increase?) and here below a copy and paste of their answer, My name is Hazel with Taurus customer service. I have received your email this morning. I do apologize that you are unhappy. Taurus only Taurus USA I consider this answer a BLESSING; because it gives me a true reality check of what the customer service is in this company and what YOU WILL expect, when something goes wrong with your Firearm (and Taurus is notorious for quality issues) Therefore God blessing my letter to them, as it gave me the possibility to have an immediate reality check of what to expect from their customer service in the future: CARELESSNESS.

I've only had a real issue with my Taurus Spectrum and I've never reached out to them about it. All my other Taurus firearms run as expected. I have heard of issues with some of their older stuff but not so much with the newer firearms. You also have to consider the price, a $200 Taurus and a $800 S&W are not the same gun. Thanks for watching!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview : agree. We should also consider that this Firearm will be soon sold for 3,000US$ before end of 2024 (at this % price increase over time before end of 2024). Time to buy them all, at any cost. Thanks for the video

@Andrea G. sounds like it could be a good investment but I just don't think the price will get that high. If it does though....
