You are showing a lack of logic. It is the system. It is LITERALLY the system you choose to implement in the USA. More enlightened countries don't lock people up for petty crimes because it does MORE damage to the wife and children than it does to the person you lock up. It even shortens the telomeres at the end of the DNA in the child meaning the children of convicts will die younger and get more age-related health issues than those who's parents don't go to prison. You have the largest prison population in the world and the biggest issue with child gun deaths and child crime in the world, you are locked in a self perpetuating cycle. Now you might agree with the system of revolving door incarceration and misery - but it IS a system and the system did fail this person just as the system failed the children of every inmate in the USA

@@clevelandcbicycle of abuse is real, doesn’t mean it’s indefinite in the fact that it will ALWAYS happen…
@mookiess
@mookiess 8 месяцев назад
@clevelandcbi it most definitely exists, when you consider there's a higher likelihood of being an abuser from those that were abused compared to those that were never abused. That said its NOT some set fate for every abused child. Some people grow up being so used to abuse that they grow up thinking it was "necessary" or okay, and then go on to do the same to their own kids as its the only form of parenting they know. Then you get others like Bruce, whom i also fall under, is able to acknowledge and understand that what they experienced was wrong and learn from their parents mistakes and not do the same. In American culture its basically normalized physical punishment like spanking in the belief it's needed for kids to learn, when the research says completely otherwise. But people do it anyways, and its because of the cycle; they learned it from their parents and decided, whether out of misguided love or anger, pass it onto their children. The cycle of abuse does exist and has existed throughout many lifetimes. It is not some simple made up crap, it is a topic that has been studied extensively and it has and is destroying many lives. Its simply that some are granted the abilities to fully break their own cycle. And i think especially now with social media really highlighting the idea of abuse, more and more people are becoming aware of what it is and breaking from it instead of just passing it off as normal parenting.

My brother was arrested in 2020 for attempted murder at the age of 19. He's currently serving 10 years in prison (he signed a pretty good plea deal - it was his first offense ever) & now I find myself really empathizing with the families of people convicted of violent crimes. Of course, we empathize with victims & their families. But people generally treat the families of the accused as if they are somehow guilty too, or responsible for the behavior of their loved one. My other brother & I hunted our youngest brother down when he went on the run. He was 30 miles up into the mountains at a clandestine meth lab. We brought him in to make sure he didn't die in a shoot out or something crazy. It was easily the most devastating experience of my life. & when his face was plastered all over the news, people's comments about him & our family were just awful. The sheriffs office actually released a statement saying we were the ones who tracked him down & negotiated his peaceful arrest because it got so bad. All this to say... we are not responsible for the actions of the people we love. I hope Taylor never sees the light of day again, but I also hope her family comes to terms with horrible situation in a healthy way. Wouldn't wish what they're going thru on anyone. Praying for them, as well as the victim's family. There are no winners in this situation. Just a sad deal all around.

@@HeatherHoltthere's a theory that's been studied extensively that if an abused child has at least one person in their life who expressed love for them, there is hope they won't eventually become abusers, also. If the child has no love or kindness and is continually humiliated, the child will most likely become a violent person. There is also that some people's brains are predisposed for the person to become a sociopath/psychopath. An abusive childhood would then cause that person to become psychopathic.

I think the judge was just driving home the point that she once had some potential, but she threw it away on drugs. Now its up to her if she wants to/or is mentally capable of trying to better herself in any way during her stay in prison for the rest of her life. I think everyone is capable of improving themselves. But, no matter how much she can improve herself and try to do some good (if only for herself), she still shouldn't be released from prison. Yeah the only thing I didn't like about his verdict was the way he suggested that the system is not responsible at all for helping people. I wonder if this guy is from the Federalist Society or whatever because well this particular case the system did not fail her... In general the United States Healthcare System is a global laughing stock. What we spend per capita on social policy is among the lowest in the oecd and we are the only oecd country without a Universal Health Care system. So while I thought his sentence was perfect, there was some undercurrent of almost libertarian militancy against the idea that a government should have to do anything to help anyone. The richest nation in the history of humanity should at least join the rest of the industrial world and guarantee Health Care to all of its citizens. Even right-wing governments in Israel and the UK support some kind of single-payer healthcare system, do not support the idea of medical debt even existing let alone causing bankruptcy

I’ve been binging Bruces vids and got excited to watch a react to something I haven’t seen yet! I live in Green Bay and am also a recovering addict of 3 years. This judge sees over Heroin Drug Court which is an amazing opportunity to seek treatment over jail. I personally haven’t been through it but know many friends and clients who have. So he is hugely involved in the lives of addicts and has to have so much patience to spend every week seeing over each person, and at graduation he speaks on each one individually ☺️ So he has to have a great understanding of how much active substance use can affect decisions made that don’t reflect the moral compass. But dismemberment is not a choice that comes from using meth. That takes some serious mental defects. And the thing is we can have compassion for mental health disorders and the disease of addiction but also separate it from the persons character when it comes to crimes involving theft and drugs. Murder and gruesome acts towards the body to this capacity is just not explained by being a drug addict. I appreciate him bringing up addiction in a compassionate light of the disease of it instead of it being just simply a negative life choice. So hammering home her actions even after giving that empathy really stands out to me to highlight that it is not fair to correlate the horrific details of the crime with these issues. This can hugely impact the stigma that still surrounds addiction not being seen as a disease in of itself. Separating it from the fact that this is her character and she is still accountable for the crime to the fullest extent with no excuse. Also I love how Bruce says “a small town like this” 😆 of 100,000 people lol I thought I got out of the rural Midwest town living

I thought the Judge gave an amazing discussion at the end as he sentenced Taylor. While he said the crime was horrific he made a point that Taylor having only her father who came in with a prison jumpsuit as a witness for her in the courtroom summed up her life and the Judge wondered if Taylor had any chance from the start. The Judge took exception to Taylor’s father saying the system failed Taylor when he said, “the father said the system failed Taylor and that ironic since it is the father’s job and not the system’s job to raise a child. And the father came in here in a prison jumpsuit.” The Judge mused that will Taylor’s son who is now with his grandmother (Taylor’s mother) become part of the vicious circle of imprisonment. He hoped not. The Judge said the system does all it can but nothing can replace a parent. The Judge was not pompous or on a power trip but was honest and direct. It one of the best statements by a judge I ever heard at the end of a trial.

@@1truesuffolk-ian486I wonder if provision will be put in place to help this poor little boy have the best chance? Like a social worker to make sure he gets nursery provision and to check in with teachers and his family to make sure things are as good as they can possibly be for him. When he's older he'll need support coming to terms with what his mother did. This is where state sponsored social care can mitigate the inhereted damage this child has already experienced. Or as a society, we can just ignore trauma and deprivation and allow the whole pattern to just repeat itself, leading to terrible criminality and jail. Jail will probably turn out to be the most stable environment his mother has ever known.

@@janeking9540 part of me is glad he’s only 2. The memories he will have if this time are slim. However he will someday learn what his mother did. This is when “the system” can step up. As a child of a parent who went to prison for a horrific crime I can say the next steps that are taken for this little boy will shape him forever. The hardest lesson I had to learn was I am NOT just my fathers daughter. It took me a long time to learn I’m not just the daughter of the man who did a horrible crime. I am me. That took in years report and I pray the little boy gets because this will affect him for the rest of his life. I edited this to add that there are services out there and there are programs out there for his family and guardian put them in place. I praise his provisions were properly made and accepted. In my opinion they need to legally change his last name. My last name was unique and one quick google people quickly learned who my father was or people who knew the crime quickly put it together.

I felt bad for the public defender, he has to defend her. He literally is obligated to do his best but there was just so little to work with. " she smoked cannabis when she was a teenager so her decision making is flawed..." that was an actual point he emphasized but it's really all he had to work with so I can't blame him

Bruce, I love your videos. You've been a highlight of my mornings, and I love drinking coffee and doing homework while I watch. I've learned a thing or two about law and you're also pretty funny, so thank you
