Justin mate, re-record Don't let the bells end with an artfully low budget, youtube-y looking video that plays on how shit the world is presently, and label it Taylor's version- and at the end of it have a direct plea to Aldi. It'll be meta as fuck
Firstly, I confess to being a big fan of TS so may be biased here... she did take a stand against Spotify and Apple Music about making sure that all artists regardless of streaming volumes are properly paid. On the topic of her ex label stiffing her, I think we have to remember she was 13 when she was first signed. Also in light on some of the comments already here and to clarify she didn't lose out on bidding for her masters. They were sold behind her back after expressing that she'd like to purchase them herself. The label only offered her a chance to earn back her masters one album at a time for every new album she put out which she turned down for obvious reasons as that's basically extortion. The real genius move is adding previously unreleased material with the new albums, which guarantees fans new and old will check out the re-records.
My understanding is that labels often remaster well-known catalog recordings to constitute a "re-release" which can reset the clock on the age of the copyright. This means the label (or the copyright holder of the master recording) will retain that ownership for another 75 years or whatever before it goes into the public domain. There are often technological considerations like the one you mentioned (new mediums for listening to music, better technology, etc), but when you see 27 different remasters of the same Beatles, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, et al records, it's very often a financial consideration.
Your channel is so wholesome dude. I always expect you to just be "that grumpy old guy moaning about today's pop music" but you're just saying nice things, I love it, keep doing what you do 🥰 Strange connection on the Taylor Swift/Phil Collins thing but have you heard Taylor's live lounge cover of Can't Stop Loving You? Outstanding song and performance.
Mike, you should know that you're a groovy guy. You know why? Cos you're groovy and I said so. If anyone ever gives you any guff just tell them I'm in your corner. (Im kind of a big deal 😌😂) all the best Mike!
every video title is phrased in such a way as to make you think he's gonna spend the whole time shitting on another musician and then he's pleasantly respectful of them.
I feel like I remember from an interview or something that she got into The Darkness after Ed Sheeran took her to a show. So that’s TWO people you’ve talked about that like you back.
Talking of "Dad Rock", I took my teenage son to watch you last week in Southend. He's pretty reserved and as a typical teenager usually goes out of his way to hate everything I recommend. Found out he messaged you today on tiktok to say how awesome he thought you were! (you kindly replied) We now have you & the darkness in common which has made my flipping year so ta very much chaps. p.s my feet hurt by the end so is it ok to wear my slippers next year?
Man, this channel is amazing. I've been a fan of Mr. Hawkins since 2003, and it's been great hearing his perspectives on music. Sending love from Philadelphia!
I loved “Easter is Cancelled.” One of your best! I was going to see you live in Chicago on the supporting tour, but damn COVID hit. Good luck with the new album. I’m going to check it out on Spotify. I also hope this RU-vid channel is extremely successful because I’ve been enjoying it very much.
I love a bit of Swift , a collaboration would be amazing.I feel your personalities would merge beautifully like a mint leaf in a mojito . Can't see anything wrong with those trousers , good ten years left in those yet.
Love you, Justin. It would've been SO easy (and justifiable) to be a bit grumpy and bitter about the timing of the rereleases but you're just really supportive of it. Obviously it must piss you guys off but you're incredibly graceful about it. I bought Motorheart along with the signed pic and the cassette off of your store and I love it.
Justin is hilarious, wholesome, and intelligent. I've been ride or die with the Darkness since they hit the scene. I could listen to Justin talk music all day.
The new album is great Justin. My current favorite song is "Speed of the Nite Time" but favoriteness is quickly expanding to where I just want to hear it all. Also, congratulations to Taylor Swift and her eternal success.
Seems as though you mention Def Leppard you should check out the crossroads Taylor Swift did with them. A Swiftness collaboration would be quite cool to see. Keep up the good work Justin!
Loving this channel. I've seen you live a lot of the years at festivals such as Download and I think maybe Reading and Leeds a few times. I had no idea to quite the extent that you are an absolute legend of a man. And this channel has made it clear !!
So, there's a song by Swifty called August, and the outro just gets me right in the emotions, I don't know why. I don't know if it's something you could unpick, Justin, but I've always wondered why I find it so appealing. Anyways, great vids, dude. I bloody love them all.
Motorheart is incredible! I have always wondered what the best way is to support the Darkness (and similar bands) - obviously I always see you when your in town. buying merch from your site? Something else? I was always impressed that Taylor Swift did a program with Def Leppard a while back.
Taylor's back catalogue went up for option and her ex-management company outbid her on it. She's re-recording all her previous records to populate her approved copies in place of the originals, adding unreleased material and changing artwork so she deservedly gets any sales from new fans exploring older albums. I am loving both Motorheart and Red - totally awesome albums!!! Btw Speed Of The Night Time is the most AWESOME Darkness track since Dinner Lady Arms!!!!! 😯👍🎸🎶💜
She actually wasn't given the opportunity to buy as the label and all masters were sold. Then her master's were sold again without her having the opportunity to bid
I'm loving your videos Justin, as a long time listener since hearing "Get Your Hands Off of My Woman" on a Metal Hammer cover CD. I totally agree about rock bands rerecording their work. Can you imagine Black Sabbath re-recording their 1970 debut, even as close as a couple of years later!? There's no way the magic of that record would stay, it was basically their live set with some 8 track enabled overdubs.
These are great, you should hire an editor to cut in some images and some chord charts on the screen while you play so that we can follow along with you.
@@JL-wr8gh to get back at Tay Tay for bumping them out of the Top 10,, The Darkness should at least re-record (do a cover version of) “Look What you Made Me Do”.
Omg as a huge Taylor fan who loves The Darkness (seen you twice live- the last time only 13 days ago!), I love this video. Thank you for understanding and supporting Taylor on her re-releasing journey. Also, yes Taylor does make pop music but she actually started in country music before switching to pop. And her last two albums are alternative. Her country songs have a number of sub-genres to them too. She’s made a few country-rock songs before (albeit not many but they are bangers) 😄. I think what’s she’s doing is so important for the music industry. I think she’s the most famous musician to re-record her music and it’s made her current label lengthen the amount of time they would need to wait for until their artists can re-record their music, probably out of fear that other artists on their roster will do the same. It won’t affect Taylor because when she signed with them, she negotiated that she would be own all her music going forward but it will affect others artists unfortunately. But she has way more freedom as to what she can release and when on this label than she did on her old one so that’s good. Another reason she’s re-recording her older music is that when she left her old label, her old label executive sold the label that owns Taylor’s old masters to Scooter Braun, the person who bullied her publicly for years. When he bought it, he started to exploit those masters and use them to control her. He sold the label last year to this company, but he still profits off her music from the deal. So, she’s gaining back her control from him too.
Justin Hawkins, I have to say it, you're great, I've watched a few of your videos and (not even being a Darkness fan of note) have concluded. I love you muchly! Keep 'em coming
Good for her for making that move. It's terrible how artists get pigeon holed into contracts like that. But also sad she knocked your album off the top 10. Keep it up. Love these chats👍😄
this is the best that has happened to RU-vid in a long while! Really digging these Justin! Would love to hear you grab some classic songs from the 70's too and discuss them! (Plze)
A request for Justin-please give us an analysis/overview of the lugubriously velveteen harmonies (both guitar and vocal) heard in “Why Don’t The Beautiful Cry.” Thx!
Justin I just wanted to let you know I’ve been a fan since the get go. I saw you many years back in Austin, TX at Stubb’s BBQ. After my divorce, I introduced my new boyfriend to you, and let me tell you…you’re his absolute favorite band. I felt so bad you guys played in Austin again but we didn’t know about it, right before our move to California. We’re back in Texas now but everytime I get in his car to this day! He’s playing all your albums. I hope I can take him to see you soon!!! Are you coming back to Austin TX anytime soon??? Please let me know! I would love to surprise him. Thanks for your music, your talent and authenticity. You guys are amazing!!! Thank you, love you! Tavia ❤️🎸
Some day a lemming will fly. I'm motivated to go out and buy two Darkness albums, one for me and one which I'll send to Taylor. If millions of my fellow denizens of the dark do the same, Christmas will be yours again. I hope Taylo has lots of storage. How much do you admire my loyalty. 🎸👍👌💜💚❤️💖🥰
A remaster is just newly mastered, not re-recorded or (usually) not remixed. Usually it's a bit louder if nothing else, since the technology has improved a ton since, say, the 80's. For re-recorded songs, it would say something different. Spotify labels the new versions "revised version".
Your a legend Justin. What you see is what you get 💯 Enjoy listening to your thoughts... I'm going to play IAM SANTA on repeat as I have been since I heard all I want for Christmas 2 weeks ago. Thanks for the cookies 🍪
I read Taylor is a heroine in the music biz for getting musicians paid directly and not to their record company accounts; regarding any payments coming from the sale of equities record companies were given from streaming services such as Spotify. It means rather than the money go into a record company account and pay off debt and the musician still be left with nothing, the musician can actually cash the cheques themselves and keep the money. And why did fledgling Spotify give record companies free equity in their companies? Simple.. to gain cheap access to all of their back catalogue and stream them all to us for an artificially low price. (Thus paying musicians extremely poorly for use of their product.) Ps Spotify owner Daniel Ek is now worth 4.2 billion.
I love your channel. The way you describe things I actually understand. Please keep this channel going . Could you please do a episode on motorheart. By the way "the Christmas song " is being played in our shopping centre. I sing it at the top of my lungs
When you play the jingle in the lower register right after the trouser and jacket incidents (around 14.30), it really sounds like the start of the Crystal Maze theme.
It's a move that Prince said he was going to do long ago, but unfortunately never did. He was tired of Warner making all the money from his old albums, so he said he was just going to re-record all of them and release them himself.
The remaster surely goes as a new version that's optimised as you expressed. So the money is the new remaster re release money which I imagine would be collected by the newer label that paid for the remaster/re recording.
I remember how The Enid (Brit Prog Rock) fought for years to get their masters, and ended up getting some back and rerecording some of their back catalogue back in the mid 80s, releasing it on their own cottage industry label, with different different cover art, band line up, and sometimes musical rearrangements and song titles were slightly changed. On the plus side, I own the lot, original and rereleased, and it is kind of great to own two "alternate universe" back catalogues of the same band.
Ah, the penny drops..........Miles Hunt Wonder Stuff style, re-recording the original first two albums with his current band at the time, different logic I know, but the aesthetic is similar. Plus the recordings are fresh and new for fans, winner winner vegan dinner. Love the channel, great to be on board.
My band re-released an album where the only changes were a new bonus track and new artwork on a new label, which enabled the new label to collect the money and the old label to poke off...hooray!
Another “oh hi” introduction. Approved beyond measure with a physical smash of that like button. In fact I hit that line button so hard you re-introduced yourself and it created a 60hz feedback loop only awesome in nature. I’m fairly certain it’s worth at least a hundred thousand likes, but just in case it isn’t you’ll just have to remember it’s worth that many in my and Black Shuck’s hearts.
Every artist should own the rights to their music! IMO Taylor is doing what Prince did before they owned her first born! At least she didnt have to change her name. Well that ending was the ending of all endings 🤣 Thanks Justin keep them coming 👍
I’d always wondered why they re-recorded Bells End. Smart move. KISS and Journey both did it with a bunch of their hits and included the new recordings as bonus CDs with their new album releases a few years ago.
@Justin Hawkins Rides Again One of Taylor's managers is Robert Allen who is Rick Allen's brother (as I'm sure you're aware Rick is Def Leppard's drummer). She recorded a TV show with them back in 2008 CMT Crossroads. btw I am a heavy metal Swiftie. It's her old Label that she's getting at, Management has stayed the same.
Didn't Prince do that back when he left his old label and changed his name to the love symbol to get around the label's hold on his name? I can't remember the details now...
I like the impromptu nature of the channel. The chord is an a-diminished chord with a C in the bass just in case anyone was wondering. It’s an extremely common type of chord in classical music from all eras. It’s pretty recognizable because of the tritone sound (like in the song “Black Sabbath”).
I am a Rock Guy through and through but I think a Darkness/Taylor collab would be Awesome.. The Hawkins Brothers shredding on Guitars and backup vocals with Taylor on Rythem Guitar and Lead vocals.. Imagine all of the Genres that would have a listen to that
Remastering should be exactly what you said, where it's just mastered to suit the current music technology for listening. I suppose any other shenanigans such as re-recording will be seperate things and so any licences go to the people who worked on / own those new ones. I suppose the wording of my record contract 'Exclusive Exploitation Agreement' says everything about how the music industry works but like everyone else I am dazzled by it and dived in regardless.
Watched last week in Brighton - bloody fantastic. Can you do a video where you discuss influences on darkness, glam rock etc. Who influenced you and why? Keep on rocking 🤘
