I have read the complete discworld series and started with the colour of magic. I think I read the first 20 or so books very quickly over a few weeks and I just couldn't get enough of them. They do get better as they move on and once I caught up with all that had been released in paperback I bought them in hard cover as soon as they were released. An epic series and worth reading every one!! Keep up the good work Mike and keep reading.

I LOVE Terry Pratchett. "Color of Magic" is decent, but he gets SO MUCH BETTER later in the series, as he really hits his stride. Did you see that "Theft of Fire" was recently selected as a finalist for the Prometheus Award? TBD if it wins, but hope it makes it onto your TBR, would love to hear what you think!
@destro6971
@destro6971 Месяц назад
Publication order is absolutely the right way through Discworld. Theres so much compounding world building that you miss out on lots of little references the deeper you get. possible exceptions with Small Gods, Pyramids,and Monstrous Regiment,as they are the stand aloniest of the stand alones. But even after those you should start at 1. The Turtle Moves.

@jameskyle7943
@jameskyle7943 Месяц назад
I fully agree with reading Colour of Magic first. And reading the rest in publishing order as well. Even though they can all be read as stand-alones, each book tends to layer on the references from prior books, so if you read them out of order I think a lot of things will not make as much sense.

My May TBR List: «The Wise Man’s Fear» by Patrick Rothfuss (Fantasy, sequel to «The Name of the Wind») «Madouc» (Lyonesse Trilogy #3) by Jack Vance ((Pre-)Arthurian Fantasy) «The Dragonbone Chair» (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #1) by Tad Williams (Epic Fantasy, a key influence for George R. R. Martin's « A Song of Ice and Fire») My May MBR list: «After Rome» by Morgan Llywelyn (Historical Fiction set in Post-Roman Britain) «Idoru» by William Gibson (Cyberpunk) «Kings of the Wyld» by Nicholas Eames (Fantasy Humor) I have just finished «Empire of Silence» and Petrik & Jake Bishop have group-pressured me (though in the nicest way, after all Petrik is Southeast Asian and Jake Canadian! 😆) into start reading «Howling Dark» right away! And Saga of the Forgotten Warrior intrigues me!

I am very much a disciple of the 'publication order' style of reading, as I think evolution of style and context is very important. And it is very much so in Discworld. I read it in publication order back to back (that's about a solid year of reading nothing but Discworld), and I'm very glad I did. But as many people have probably pointed out: you will more than likely like it. Maybe really like it, even as you encounter a few stinkers in there. But it could be quite a while before you love it. For me that turning point definitely was Guards Guards, the 8th book in. So while I applaud the decision of not starting with Guards Guards, I would most importantly implore you to not drop the series before Guards Guards.

People get really hung up on the reading order for Discworld, and it all comes down to the quality, I think. Because yeah, you can certainly watch Sir Pterry's skills improving before your own eyes, but it's not that the first books are awful or anything. Later books are much better, that's true. But I did the same, I started reading following the publication order and I don't regret it whatsoever.

I read Color of Magic and then I stopped with Discworld...haha, it wasn't very good to me. I may try some of the more popular in that series but...we'll see.

Great lineup Mike! I have yet to read a Pratchett book myself, I'm one of those people probably starting with Guards Guards 😂....but maybe I'll switch that and follow along with you with Colour of Magic. I have both books on the shelf. I'm on a little break from Suneater but when I return, It'll be Demon in White. I get the Leonard Cohen's "You Want it Darker" song in my head every time I hear talk of SK's - You Like it Darker title. -Cheers!

I read Guards Guards as my first Pratchett book a year ago, and good gosh was it the perfect place to start. First book in years to make me laugh like I was watching a movie. Good luck on your Pratchett journey

@@robertdeforest9682 Thanks! I'm excited to start into Pratchett. I've read humor fantasy/sci-fi before and seem to enjoy the subgenre. Also thanks for sharing your experience with starting with Guards Guards. Regardless, sounds like I'm in for a fun ride.

Mike, have you seen the new 50th anniversary edition of Carrie being sold by Blackwells online? They deliver to the states. Troy Tradup, author of The Forsaken Boy, made a booktube video showing it off. It looks great, like the special editions of Brandon Sanderson's secret projects.

House of Assassins? Any elves? 👀 I enjoyed The Vanished Birds, but it doesn’t stand out in my memory as a favorite. Looking forward to hearing what you and the old geezer group think! 😁

There might be! Not sure. Feels like I barely scraped the tip of the world in book 1.
