The aids musical was a parody of a 90s Broadway musical called RENT.. (Lease in this). Which was eventually made into a movie... And yes several characters in that musical have aids and they sing about it.

I watched this movie a few times while my dad was deployed during the war. Dad was civil affairs and spent months outside the wire living with the locals (crazy shit there) and when he had down time he’d watch team America and the reboot for battlestar galactica which definitely had some terrorism/current event influences. Dunno how he did it while being actively in it. He was there during the height of the insurgency too….. lots of stories, all of em pretty fucking intense….and that’s just the ones he feels okay sharing. SMH. Funny thing is I rewrote this comment to make this shorter….I rambled earlier cause damn this movie takes me back to a time and place smh crazy shit.

When Matt & Trey do foreign languages they usually use rudimentary high school level Spanish - because many Americans understand rudimentary Spanish - and sometimes when there's Japanese dialogue they will actually use real, authentic Japanese (because Trey's first wife was a Japanese woman and he actually speaks fluent Japanese)... but when there's any other language it's just the mix of gibberish and random words you noticed them using for "Arabic." This whole film is supposed to be a joke making fun of Hollywood blockbuster action movies with dumb scripts, lots of explosions, and an extremely Amero-centric point of view where every location is introduced an explained via its relation to America, and each culture depicted is just a collection of stereotypes that Americans would know. That's intentional and part of the joke. Re: the R/L thing, though... in many East Asian languages including Japanese and Korean, R/L is actually the same phoneme so they do sometimes mix it up in either direction. It depends on where in the word the sound is placed. Sometimes "r" becomes "l" and sometimes "l" becomes "r" ... to them it sounds the same. The same way that to a native English speaker... the "p" sound in "Pepsi" and in "stop" sounds like the same phoneme when actually it's not... one is aspirated and the other is non-aspirated. English speakers don't differentiate because there is no change in meaning if you add or subtract aspiration from the "p" in either word you would just sound like you have a weird accent. But to a speaker of Hindi... aspirated and non-aspirated "p" sounds are understood to be different phonemes so they would make fun of Americans using them interchangeably the same way we make fun of Koreans who mix up L and R.

I’m torn between whether a foreign audience will “get” the “America as World Police” aspect (they should, probably more acutely than us) or the hyper-jingoistic post-9/11 Michael Bay-esque inside joke will be too on-the-nose. In the late 1960s there was a British series of Puppet-based shows called Thunderbirds. This movie directly emulated them. They did not originally plan to make Matt Damon so...special. But when they saw how his sculpture came out of the oven they thought he looked a bit...special. The AIDS song is a Broadway musical "Lease." Based on the plays "Rent" and "Grease." Rent was about someone getting AIDS. If you ever check out the unrated version the puppet-sex is even raunchier.

Assuming this would be low budget because 'puppets' is one of the big mistakes Trey Parker and Matt Stone made too... it cost $32 million... they also assumed this would be easy, because... puppets. Turned out to be the hardest goddamn thing you can possibly do. All those sets, vehicles and puppets were built from scratch and required specialists to operate... but then the movement was to fluid so they literally told to puppeteers to make it look worse.

One of the things this movie criticized was the American media’s handling of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. While they occasionally interviewed retired soldiers and generals for their thoughts on the war, mostly they interviewed celebrities whose only opinion was that of the most recent publication they read. I’m so doing, the media shot themselves in the foot, as they did not assemble enough qualified experts to explain why the invasion was a bad idea.

They are marionettes, a puppet controlled from above with strings. There were two or three television series out of Britain in the '60s that were the inspiration for this film. The most well known would be The Thunderbirds. These were produced in 'supermarionation' where the mouth movement was automated by electronics listening to the prerecorded dialog. If you look closely, there are all sorts of funny details in the sets of Team America like the pavement in Paris being made of croissant shaped cobbles.

There are some DVD extras on the making of.... and yes, your instincts are right, it was VERY involved. I think one them said they never would've attempted it if they had any idea what they were in for. So I'm guessing there will never be a sequel. 😏 There is a special edition DVD that has a commentary track. It is HILARIOUS! Lots of inside stories and details that make the film even more enjoyable. Having grown up with Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's "Super Marionettes" on shows like Thunderbirds, Stingray etc, I found the puppet concept even funnier. They drew lots of humour from those shows and every over-the-top cliche Hollywood action movie. This movie has aged far better than I expected. Maybe because the world HASN'T changed that much since it was made. 🙄 Thanks for watching & sharing this.

13:25 Kudos to your editor on this one Mary. This is very on-point with the satirical tone, and made me laugh pretty damn hard. The very fact that you're "toning down" puppet blood is dead on, and the extra effort here is appreciated. 28:16 and yes, I agree, that's not how any of this works. I love this movie too, for lots of reasons, but as a whole, it's got some problematic takes. Matt and Trey, bothsidesing since before it was cool. (It was never cool, but in the late nineties and early oughts, edgy was all that mattered)

I didn't notice only one part of the screen being "black-n-whited" @13:25. Good catch!😆 And finally someone understanding that Matt and Trey were in a way "bothsidesing". They were both actual big Bush/Iraq War supporters at the time, which people either don't know or overlook with this film.

Matt & trey wanted to make this a trilogy but they said it was so challenging and terrible to make that they would never make another puppet movie again

The only problem with Team America having a romantic relationship is love making would be out of the question, because their strings would get all tangled up.

I love that you took this with a good sense of humor. I saw this when deployed to Iraq and the ridiculousness was extra funny.

30:08 Look up "Thunderbirds" their creator made many children's serials in the 1960's and 1970's. Most of these serials were based on "Supermarination" puppets. Team America creators said they will never do another puppet movie.
