Tearful Margaret Thatcher Leaves Downing Street for the Last Time (1990)

On 28 November 1990, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher left Downing Street for the last time, having been ousted following a rebellion in her own cabinet and party. After fighting back tears during a brief farewell speech outside Number Ten, the Prime Minister made her way to Buckingham Palace with her husband, Denis Thatcher, to offer her resignation to Queen Elizabeth II. That done, the Thatchers made their way to their new residence, 11 Hambledon Place, in Dulwich. Speaking to the press on the driveway, Mrs Thatcher joked about having traded Number 10 for Number 11. And she said she would be in the House of Commons the following day, to organise her office as a backbench MP.

One of the best prime ministers the UK ever had. I think many see that now. She put the UK first. Today after her, they don’t put the UK first and you can see that easily. Country I love declined since then economically and more. Sadly. They don’t put their country first. How can you help others when you can’t get your own country in order? Best leaders are in their past.

She was indeed the Iron Lady and while I liked her English (talking with a grape in your throat), her legacy is still visible in Britain today, and that is not a positive thing. I do admit, the Falkland war was done very swift which is precisely what she needed to boost her popularity.

Nostalgia is a funny thing. Thatcher was extremely unpopular when she left office. Her policies were unpopular, (eg the poll tax) the country was in deep recession, there was a mortgage crisis and inflation was in double figures (ring any bells?). Most people breathed a sigh of relief when she left. Yet, looking back 33 years she is viewed more favourably than she was then. I have a tendency to agree, despite being against many of her policies. She had conviction, a belief system, principles and she did what she said she was going to do. She got more wrong than she would have admitted, but at least we knew where we stood.Survey the current crop of politicians we're saddled with. Not a single one has any of that. Not a single one measures up close in any way.

It’s such a tumultuous topic of discussion. On the one hand our country is now is craving for steady, disciplined leadership - something we see when we reflect on Thatcher - but on the other hand, when she says “we have left this country in a much better place to how it once was” I can’t help but think of the 1000s of families in the north, at that very moment, struggling in deep poverty and anguish as a result of her policies.

She was supported by the middle class who did very well by her. House prices went up. Council houses were bought by the working class. Everyone benefited. She was the STAR of 20 th century, supported by Reagan. Huge respect.

The bar is so low with the current selection of Tories it makes her look good BUT she was an apologist for apartheid. She wouldn’t pull the British claws out of Ireland. She mercilessly destroyed the mining communities and not help them transition Then there is the ongoing ideology that she and Reagan introduced, NEOLIBERALISM better known as “trickle down economics “ She was also a Euro sceptic and we NOW see where that has finally led Britain into. It makes the Recessions of the last 40 tears look like a holiday. But we can’t blame her entirely. She wouldn’t have achieved the ultimate destruction of Britain along with Reagan’s unleashed Capitalism. That is the blame of all those Tory and Republican voters who have signed off both their nations futures. THEY are the ones to HATE.

Odd, she leaves Downing Street in car reg F496 PYT, (It looks Green) is shown going up the mall in reg F619 PJD. (Blue). Leaves the palace in reg F496 PYT again and arrives home in F619 PJD. Is this two videos spliced together ..

@@hmmmmm9540 Now we are only starting to fight her way that only the richest benefit from growth and we are being socialized into servant role. Neoliberalism is really Authoritarian and it fundamentally defeated community, democracy, friendships, character, class struggle and ethics and makes people isolated, alone and in war against each other. It created a style of leadership in staff management and state governance which equals to 18th century forced estate management, not by horses and whips but tone and discourse. It created the culture of firing employees by whim and undid the entire history of job unions. It ripped popular culture of its meaning to the masses, music, movies, it emptied the kids playing fields, it caused wide-spread poverty and exclusion.

I remember standing opposite No 10 in the freezing cold for three hours on the day in 1979 when Mrs Thatcher left for Parliament to deliver her first speech as Prime Minister. A good memory from a wonderful trip to the UK, despite the chill.
