"Tears Are Not Enough" was a 1985 charity single recorded by a supergroup of Canadian artists, under the name Northern Lights, to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The project was organized by Bruce Allen, who brought together a large group of artists to record a song written by Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance and David Foster. The song was recorded on February 10, 1985 at Manta Sound studios in Toronto, Ontario.
Featuring Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Ann Murray, Geddy Lee (Rush), Bruce Cockburn, Platinum Blond, Paul Shaeffer, Guess Who, Ronny Hawkins, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young etc. Inspired by "Do they know it's Christmas?" and "We are the world" famine relief fund raisers.

For everyone who cares about this song… the French Horn player David Foster used for the lead brass lines… his name is Steve Denroche. He passed away yesterday from brain cancer. I’m proud to have called him “friend” and proud that he was featured in this iconic Canadian song. Godspeed, Steve. 🎶🩷

I have passed this thinking along to my kids. This was more than artists coming together and this was more than a great song - the message was clear and those who acted as a result of it and still do today are the true heroes. Donate to those who need it more than you. $1 or thousands, it all counts and helps.

Can't say I've ever heard THIS song before, so yeah about the very 1st time I've heard this. Good thing they do have a whole big group of Canadian artists to get2gether for a single just like with USA for Africa & the British Band Aid!

How can you not be proud of our famine relief efforts? We have an abundance of talented singers, songwritters, and musicians that kids today are missing out on. :(

Another great song created by the great David Foster (on of two songs he made around that time with videos to help those in need in Africa sparked by the We Are The World project made by Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie in the USA). The other video to help the poor that David Foster made at that time is called Voices That Care. Check it out on RU-vid.

This video really impresses me because it shows even the hockey team set in there. Even famous actors and comedians like John Candy, who I have never seen singing a song, is in there. This is a wonderfully-done video. One of Canada's best. Makes me feel great to be Canadian.

i´m not canadian or american, I´m from São Paulo and by far this is the best song of the USA FA album. It´s too underated. By the way, side B of the album is the best ! Quincy Jones forgive me but David Foster has scored a goal despite of the lack to megastars. This profound song got stuck on my ears and stamped my childhood. It reminds the first time I looked up at NY WTC twin towers for the first time in 1985, this music was playing, I never felt so small in my life. Timeless song.....

One of things I liked best about this song (compared to the US & UK efforts) was that each singer's line reflected their distinct style and voice. Even without watching the video, you can clearly recognize almost all of the singers -- there's no mistaking voices like those of Lightfoot, Murray, Mitchell, Young, Hart, Adams, Lee, etc. In comparison, the US & UK songs somewhat homogenized the singers: only those having really distinct voices, like Boy George & Michael Jackson, are distinguishable.

The wonder of this event was that REAL people .. did something for others, they didnt wait for a government to do it. They said ... Enough is enough its time to stand up and walk the walk... and they did. We all have that chance today .. even in our smallest event... to do something for someone else and not ask for anything in return. Thanks for posting this song..

GREAT song even more than 25 years later! :-D This was during the Famine In Ethopia crisis, where hundreds of musicians got together & collobarated "Tears Are Not Enough", "We Are The World", & "Do They Know It's Christmas", some classic tunes at the time.

I remember, when my big brother brought the "We are the world" album to my aunt's, we began to listen to it and this song and it hit me as much as, maybe more than "We are the world" did. Still listening to it with the same love. Wish the video had higher quality.

What a fantastic blast from the past! The cut with the hockey players and crowd was done at the NHL All-Star game practice in Calgary in February of 1985. I was there, and we had to wave for what seemed forever to get it right. The song still gives me a lump in my throat.

I used to tingle all the sound of composite singers coming together to aid in causes like poverty and famine...too bad the situations have really changed little despite their best efforts...

One of the reasons I like this video is that it includes French singers from Quebec . A gathering of the best artists in Canadian history. And preferable to the sappy US song We Are the World.

I think they should have added at least one more line in French. It is one of our official national languages, after all. Je connais très bien les trois chainteurs québécois.
