Tears For Fears were one of the greatest bands of the 80s (and they're still making music!). All their songs have great melodies, complex compositions and impeccable production. Here's my top 15: 1. Sowing The Seeds Of Love 2. Shout 3. The Working Hour 4. Woman In Chains 5. Everybody Wants To Rule The World 6. Head Over Heals 7. Break It Down Again 8. Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down) 9. Mothers Talk 10. Mad World 11. Fish Out Of Water 12. Change 13. Advice For The Young At Heart 14. Power 15. Pale Shelter

This song is very close to the band and they still perform it today. Roland Orzabal (the lead singer/guitarist on this song (the bass player Curt Smith is co-lead singer of Tears for Fears and sings lead on 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' among others) was inspired to write this song after witnessing his mother suffering abuse by his father. Roland's parents ran an entertainment agency out of their home. His mother was a stripper and trained other dancers, and his father mentored male singer/songwriters. His father got jealous of his mother and thus the abuse. Eventually, his mother left, taking her three sons along with her. At the time this song came out, in 1989, they said they got flak from some of their peers for writing about such a serious subject matter while still in their 20s. Today, Tears for Fears is a great live act. Their 2022 tour in particular was thrilling. They released their first new album in 17 years called 'The Tipping Point to rave reviews earlier this year. I suggest checking out any of the performances of the song 'Rivers of Mercy' from their 2022 tour. It's the heart and soul of the new album, in my view and the live performances of it are beautiful. My personal favorite live version is listed as Tears For Fears - "Rivers Of Mercy" Live MultiCam 2022. Another awesome live performance from the same tour is 'My Demons.'

Such a well constructed song. You don't even notice there's no drums until they come in and it's a fantastic moment and just lifts the song. The bass playing is wonderful too. But the voices - oh my. TfF were happening as I turned 20 and I remember all their songs except this one oddly. It is perfect.

When I first heard this, it sounded plain compared to their other songs, but something about the message stuck with me. As I heard it again, I began to love it and the intricate subtle details in the song. The more you listen to it, the more beautiful it gets. I later began to love it as it helped me realize the personal prison I was in. I can't listen without crying 😢😢😢

Really nice review. Tears For Fears are unique in the fact that both members, Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal sing lead vocals. Roland sings lead on Woman In Chains, Curt sings lead on what is probably their biggest hit, Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Check out the official video for Advice For The Young At Heart, which has Curt on lead vocal and Oleta playing piano. Oleta also duets with Roland on Badman's Song and Me And My Big Ideals. Their best video is probably for Sowing The Seeds Of Love. Also check out the video for the song The Tipping Point which was released last year and features both Curt and Roland singing lead together, their voices blend together so well.

Tears For Fears came out with an album of new music, their first in 17 years, in 2022 - The Tipping Point. Whole album is fantastic. If you want upbeat, watch a US tour video of My Demons. The lighting made a song I liked, into a song I love. For more emotional, check out Rivers of Mercy. And for a "Part 2" of this song, watch the Break The Man video, and watch to the very end. Glad you found TFF through Oleta. When I saw them in the early 2000's, a singer named Michael Wainwright sang her parts, and WOW. Try to find a video of that! Imagine a man hitting those notes with that emotion! New sub for this reaction - thank you! (BTW, listen again to this song's beginning. It's one of the best edited/mixed songs I've heard. How many tracks can you count?)
