There were underrated at the time because it was new and was pop music. It didn’t have the credibility the more established groups had or rock bands had. Over time people resized how good they were.

My favorite band of all time. As a group and Roland Orzabal as solo Tears for Fears. He is a master lyricist and song writer and Curt Smith is a masterful bassist. Understated but groovy. He doesn't smack you in the face with it but his arrangements are intricate. The fact that he can sing and play at the same time blows my mind. This album in particular is phenomenal. The Working Hour is on this album and that's an overall fan favorite.

This is a cracking song. TFF were so talented and were one of the best acts out of the 80s. I bought this album when it first came out and have not listened to it for 30 years or so. This has inspired me to go up to the attic and get that album down! Really brilliant; brings back many memories. I loved Everybody Wants to Rule The World, and it was one of my favourite dancing songs. Whenever I think of EWTRTW I also think of 'A Little Respect' by Erasure; its programmed into me. That's because I used to weekly go to a club in the 80s called The Mandrake Club (in Bristol) and like many clubs they often played records in a certain order. Whenever they played EWTRTW it was always immediately followed by A Little Respect, and I danced to those two songs in order so many times in the 80s I still cannot separate them entirely. I expect many other people link records for similar reasons. Some great music in the 80s and I am a die-hard early Genesis fan! Sigh, I miss those days...

@@jpmp1201 You are good to watch, a knowledgeable balanced duo reviewing music in an open and honest way. If I may use a canine simile, the lovable enthusiastic and open Labrador, and the critically sombre German Shepherd guarding his praise. Makes a good team. As a by the by, never try and interpret the lyrics of Yes songs; millions have wasted hours trying. They have no meaning. They are strings of disjointed words and sentences that sound good. No more than that. I love Yes, but...…. Songs from The Big Chair was inspired by the Movie Sybil Starring Sally Field who played a Woman with 16 Different Personalities. When she did her "Sessions" with her Psychiatrist with Joanna Newman (Paul's Wife). she sat in a Big Chair. This was done at a University Library in Toronto, Ontario which isn't surprising. Besides being under British Rule and Law, Tears For Fears, The Police, them, Duran Duran as well as The Backstreet Boys were big in Canada before The USA.

Songs From The Big Chair might be the most well produced album I've ever heard. I first heard the whole album at a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 1996, and it's been one of my favorites (a desert island disk for sure) ever since. I think that it "Head Over Heels" really needs to be allowed to progress into "Broken (Live)", as on the album they're paired so closely they are almost the same song. Kinda like "Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" by ZZ top. Just subscribed.

Oh here's another fun fact. When The US Dance Show American Bandstand celebrated 33 1/3 Years on The Air in 1985 Tears For Fears along with Simon Lebon & Nick Rhodes who were doing their "Outside" Project Arcadia who wished "Bandstand" and Dick Clark all the best. This wasn't surprising since Dick had so many UK Artists on the Show and it was during that time that the Second Wave Of The British was at it's Peak.

80s the best time for variety of music, my personal being the UK synthpop wave of bands which exploded on to the pop music scene. Tears For Fears previous album (their debut) “The Hurting” is one of my favorite 80s synthpop albums. Amazing tracks like “Change”, “Mad World”, “Pale Shelter”. They followed up with the epic “Songs From The Big Chair” which would end up being one of the most popular albums of the 80s. This track “Head Over Heels” is my favorite off the album. Cool reaction! :-) I was in my teens in the 80's, so musically speaking, those were my formative years. My nominations for some of the greatest albums of the 80's would be (in no particular order)... Hounds of Love - Kate Bush. Widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, never mind just the 80's! Side one has a handful of really solid singles, and side two, The Ninth Wave, which is a concept suite, is an absolute masterpiece. So - Peter Gabriel. Ex frontman of Genesis...'nuff said! For me, the opening track, Sledgehammer, is the sound of the 80's. Discipline - King Crimson. This one took us all by surprise back then, as they kind of reinvented themselves with what was then a really fresh, new wave sound. I think it's stood the test of time really well, as it still sounds strikingly original (imo at least). I would love to see you react to any of the above. :-)

Songs From The Big Chair is a solid album, but I love The Hurting as much. Tears For Fears is great. I do think how manny narrowed down his preferred era of music makes more sense though since the music of the ‘80s is so varied. Of course, 2002-2007 is an interesting time period, (makes me wonder how old y’all were during those years,) especially since to me “emo” always referred to a different set of bands and style, (primarily post-hardcore bands,) which was, interestingly enough, already a detraction from the music initially considered “emo.” I feel like it’s hard to pinpoint a specific era since, for me. Most people stop seeking out new music at a certain point in time, which is why I love so many reaction channels, like this one, because it seems like an effort is being made to change that. I think if we looked at specific artists or genres/styles of music I could pick definitive favorites. I am always looking for new music, whether it’s old music that is new to me, revisiting old music and forming a new opinion, or seeking new, contemporary music. I definitely didn’t quite get Vaporwave at first because of how heavily drug references can play in some of it, and the problem I had with that is really that those vaporwave artists, video creators, & visual artists seemed to overlap a lot with the SoundCloud, mumble rappers obsession with “drug culture” culture. Since diving in a little deeper I’ve found a lot of the Vaporwave movement I love, (from the fashion aesthetic to the music & the hour-long, screensaver-esque RU-vid mixes.) And of course, as with every genre, a lot of artists I already like had been mislabeled as vaporwave or are totally vaporwave but didn’t get the label because they came before the movement started or the artists just didn’t know it was a thing. I highly recommend playing some vaporwave while writing, editing, or working on any creative thing where you don’t want lyrics pulling your brain away from the work at hand. *(I love getting on Bandcamp and using their search filters. I specially love the geographic filter, type in a city name and seeing if anyone there is posting their original tracks.)

My favorite band from the eighties! They’re still together and put out many albums after “Songs From The Big Chair”.

I’m a lot older than you and I LOVE that you said that this is the best album to come out of the 80s; I could not agree more. I personally am a woman of the 60s and 70s classic rock and pop and found most 80s music horrible; then I heard TFFand was relieved that a decade hadn’t been wasted! ✌🏼♥️🎼

It could have been THE classic album of the 80s if it weren’t for the fact the follow up The Seeds Of Love is even better and my 80s classic.

Both albums had no fillers. Every track was good, although to me, The Seeds of Love aged better.

Hey i was just thinking about Chicago. "Does Anyone Really Know What The Time It is", "25 or 6 to 4", "Colour My World", "Saturday In The Park". They were just a Great band and those songs puts my Dad in a Hella good mood! Give them a shot!

Also, the live studio version of "feeling stronger every day" by Chicago is excellent.

I'd love to see you guys react to some 80s King Crimson. Three of a Perfect Pair is one of my favorites.

Besides being a definite Five, this was also one of my favorite music videos from those days. Great reaction.

Beautifully said, Kriz, I love how you articulate that. And I agree totally. Songs From the Big Chair is certainly a great album; however, imo, The Hurting is even better.

Never got into Tears for Fears, but I like all their hits, including this one. You didn't tell Manny about Mad World. He should be familiar with it, if he ever watched Donnie Darko. Although that is the - now far more popular, apparently - cover by Gary Jules. EDIT: Oh right...this song was in that movie, too! Hold on...they put an original TfF song in the movie. Then they put a cover of their song in the same movie. Should have went with the original, as well. By the way, that movie has yet another song you already reviewed: Love Will Tear Us Apart The snippets you played sound like they are somewhere inbetween The Cure and Depeche Mode. Always thought the singer sounded similar to Dave Gahan from the latter.

Should've included "Broken" to begin with, it's a good segue.
