Doesn't hurt the eyes as much as the ears, what an awesome sense of humour , yet true, O the irony.

Top notch, very valid points about definition and the importance of the transients. Also, when you make electronic music, compression and limiting shouldn't even be all too necessary as you don't deal with live recordings where e.g. a guitar player hits certain notes too hard. With velocity, volume envelopes etc. you can make sure that there are no excessive peaks anywhere. Just use the f'n faders and stuff to make a proper balanced mixed and add only a tiny anount of limiting to finish it off.

Yeah but some producers use compression as an artistic tool, so it becomes very necessary

That's probably the best explanation on how a compressor works, posted here on RU-vid. I found that mostly when I wasn't happy with the compression for my tracks I had used a too long setting for release time and killed the dynamics this way. I guess that's one of the most common mistakes, so check your release time everyone! Let your music breathe again!

I'm still confused about attack and release time. Any insight into that?

I SERIOUSLY wish all people thought like him/me/many others, the loudness war is awful, was when it started and still is today.

Only if you're fully aware of this but still do it for stylistic reasons you're doing it right. But most electronic producer/dj's don't realize they can learn a lot from mixing and mastering engineers.They think they can master in a small studio with a couple of thousand dollar speakers, when mastering engineers have the best rooms with speakers up to a 100.000 dollars providing MAXIMUM resolution.You can't compose, mix AND master all by yourself and expect optimal result. That's megalomaniac.
@Nicobs2k6
@Nicobs2k6 4 года назад
Old comment but still very very actual, because nowdays you HAVE TO do it by yourself if you're not financially well enough to pay a mix and a mastering engineers, that's at least a 100-150 EUR, pro track if you do. At least that's my case, I know my "mixes" and "masterings" are far from a correct level, but I still want to send clean demos, so it is what it is...

A lot of music is extremely tiring to the ears today. And that is because people don't understand compression and limiting just serve a purpose and they shouldn't be used if you can achieve the same otherwise but without the side-effects; artifacts and loss of definition.

Should I go for -3 db or -6 db for maximum peak level when doing electronic music? I always go for -6 personally, but I don't know if that's too much headroom actually.

If you are talking about premaster file max peak level, even -1dB FS is totally fine, as long as you don't clip the master bus you're good
