They might screw up your jaw and bite though. As long as that's fine, however, you don't necessarily need to straighten your teeth. Doing it just for aesthetics when your teeth are only slightly off is unnecessary.

I used to work at a dental clinic and one of the biggest issue is people not being able to brush or floss properly if their teeth are very badly overlapped and can cause decays because of the bacteria build up from all the food getting trapped. Other than that the alignment of your teeth don't really affect the health of your teeth though!

I have this because my teeth are naturally yellow but I have been told my teeth and gums are in good shape and I've never had to have a filling. Tbh I had braces and bridges to replace adult teeth that never came through so I'd have to pay for whiter bridges and constantly whiten my teeth and obsessively up keep them so I've kind of just accepted that they are yellow now 😬

I live in Eastern Europe, due to financial situation and just culture, it's not really that important if you have slightly yellow or not super white teeth, it was a surprise to me to learn that in job interviews you can be judged because of it in US. Whitening is popular among TV hosts, local celebs and ''influencers'' who want to be perceived as celebs. I have friends who have good salaries and could afford to whiten, but they just do not bother.

Its all because of the way they worship their celebrities. Once a celebrity has something, their followers get it too and force others to get it using the "If you don't have it then there's something wrong with you and you're not welcome" method. Also called the Bandwagon Method

I get complimented on my smile and my teeth all the time, even when I travel outside of the US. Pretty much every country I've traveled, at least once someone will make note of my smile and teeth. And in the US, when people make note of it, not once has someone said "your teeth/smile look like X celebrity." White, straight teeth are just prized as a marker of attractiveness-- the same as certain body-types, hair, eyes, etc. Or are you saying that in your country there aren't certain things that are just considered attractive culturally, that have nothing to do with celebrity worship?

This happened to me. One of my adult teeth grew in under the baby tooth. It ended up causing the baby tooth to crack into 3 peices that still didn't fall out on their own. We had to have them pulled. We made so many jokes about it at the time. Because I was eating the school bread when it cracked.

It is realy fascinating, realy bad teeth in german preeschoolers counts to one of the few body and health related issues where we have good leeway to pressure parents into taking care of it. Having very bad primary teeth can damage the permanent ones badly. Every year the "toothfairy" visits every kindergarten group and teaches all children how to brush their teeth and what food is good and bad for them. She would also alarm the kindergarten teachers and parents to children with bad teeth. Crazy to hear about how bad the U.S.A. handles such things. O.o

The standard of beauty for the shape of teeth also varies wildly, like tooth gaps, pointy canine teeth, slightly crooked/pronounced teeth are all considered beautiful or ugly depending on the place and culture

My dentist told me i'd be sitting in the chair with the mouth opener in for 2 hours for the treatment (just for one tooth that i had bruised) and to not do it. So over the counter items also offer one-tooth-fixes. I bought a whitening pen and focused on that tooth until it didn't look gray anymore and was good. it was like $10.

!!! my parents grew up in a country that got absolutely wrecked due to ww2 and health, especially oral, just simply wasn't considered. they moved before they had us but unfortunately it impacted on me and my brother by extension as they would only take us to the dentist when it was free and school mandated, which stops after age 12-13. i have cavities i can't get filled because we can't afford it, despite our country supposedly having "free healthcare" 🕺

There is a good reason for that. I'm from one of those many countries you mention and my friend who is a dentist says that virtually everyone will have at least some minor issue with their teeth during their lifetime which is different from pretty much every other medicine field. Therefore, even in countries where the healthcare system is far less draconian than in the US, dental care would still have significant impact on the profits and even maybe the proper fuctioning of the system (I personally disagree with the last part). In other fields of medicine, robust madicare systems like in Europe and Canada are relying on probability, they're betting on the fact that more people will not get sick in certain areas than those who will. But in dental, people will always need work on caries, gums, braces etc. Plus if you want to prevent that, dental hygiene is a necessity in this day and age. Those are all rutine practices but very expensive to do/make. TLDR, including dental care would probably make health insurers/health care systems non cost effective.

THIS! I live in Canada and a loved one of mine can’t afford dental care and as a result is self conscious of their smile. It’s so sad, dental care should not be a class issue. Dental care IS health care

It's wild isn't it?! One of my favourite (?) facts about the UK's NHS is that at it's introduction in 1948 dentistry WAS included in the whole "free at the point of use". However there was so much need for dental care (33 million artificial teeth in the first 9 months!!) that they started charging for dentures 3 years later. People were finally seeing a dentist after probable years of pain, but it was so in demand that continuing would have bankrupted the NHS!

This is a practice of unethical dentists for sure! My mom's a dentist and she gives every single pros and cons, and the overview for long term dentistry health. She said colleagues were being certified for injectables so they could profit more in esthetics then the health related procedures!

I was traumatized by previous dental care and had poor hygiene during to depressive episodes that happened after untreated EDNOs and my family made me feel bad about my teeth and it just made me feel too ashamed it took me too long to go back, once I got there I was handled with care and always get anesthesia, now I wish I just had gone earlier instead of endured the pain

Also in Europe, the kind of whiteners and the extent of whitening that is normal in the US is illegal. People damage their healthy teeth to get that kind of white teeth. It’s horrible. If your teeth are healthy, why would you damage them so they look « pretty »? It’s madness to me.

Yeah.. a lot of people (almost everyone I know actually) had had some kind of braces in their lives, it's often done as a child because it's reimbursed until you're 16 here (as far as I know lol). It's often only to straighten the teeth or to prevent issues; I had mad "rabbit tooth" when I was young and it was this or the surgery at 18 soooo... I overall have nice teeth now, my last dentist check lasted like 5 min haha But depending on how it's done that kind of work can totally destroy your teeth, when my mum was young she'd had braces that caused a lot of damage, and basically made her dental health hell, having as much work done as she had at 30 shouldn't be normal...

Yeah I'm in the uk and don't see teeth whitening as heavily advertised or endorsed here as they seem to be in usa. Many of my classmates got braces though. I've seen americans stereotype us as having bad teeth, e.g. they gave everyone in the uk version of family guy crooked teeth, but at least most of our dentists care about our health not our wallets. In America, getting braces for straight teeth is viewed as the norm. It’s definitely a class thing, straight teeth separates the lower class and the middle class. I’ve known people whose families were lower middle class and had to make sacrifices just to afford braces for their kids. It’s even taken a step further in that it’s viewed as socially gauche for an adult to have braces, because you’re supposed to have had braces when you were a teenager. I’m pretty sure the original target audience for Invisalign was adults that didn’t want to deal with the stigma of having braces.

Tbh teeth were always involved in beauty standards. Since antiquity until today. Beauty standards are always multifaceted and with many aspects.

Dont worry. Both of my parents had extremely bad teeth(my mother from smoking, and my father from his backwards childhood and his fear of dentists). As long as you don’t have pain, your teeth can look fine. Just make sure they stay clean. Or at least these are the things my parents told me. I’m not a dentist.

wow, that's infuriating and so unprofessional of them! Write a bad review online, should shut them up for a little bit. If you are in the US, I would report them to the BBB, the Better Business Bureau for unprofessional and unethical conduct as well.

I get this a lot too, I was very sick as a child and my enamel is now permanently soft so it stains easily. It also means that whitening treatments and veneers would potentially do more damage to my teeth so I’ve never considered it. I’m aware they are ugly but I’d rather not be in pain.

I have some yellow spots on my front teeth from medication I got as a really young child when my adult teeth were still chilling out and developing in my jaw. They are perfectly fine besides that discoloration but unless I got expensive af veneers glued to my teeth there is no way to fix that. I had some people make mean comments about it over the years but most people seemed to either mind their own business or just never even noticed and I honestly don't care I grew to be fine with my teeth how they are now.

They made me so insecure and never want to smile in real life or photos for my whole life up until a couple of months ago when I got braces. I feel you man. I have straight teeth, but my adult teeth came in the size of baby teeth. My gum line looks bigger than my teeth. There's nothing to fix it either. They could try and reduce my gum line, but it could weaken my roots. So I have to live knowing when I smile all anyone will see is pink. Took me years to accept my husband thinks I have a beautiful smile, because I can't see it.

my orthodontist did that to my two front teeth a few times when i still had my braces. now my teeth feel so different now and its fairly upsetting.

The orthodontists do this as it's literally part of their training, their job is to bring your tooth into as ideal of an alignment as possible while keeping in mind the aesthetics (which is trying to bring your natural teeth to the standard of dental morphology while keeping in mind a tooth's natural variation). Orthodontists look at every angle of your teeth critically in relation to adjacent teeth, as it is their job (it's part of how the alignment comes together). Depending on how old you were when your braces came off, the orthodontists should have informed either your parents, both you and your parents, or just you (if you were a legal adult) of what the treatment entailed at its conclusion. I'm genuinely sorry you're traumatized by your former orthodontist and that you miss this part of you that is no longer there. Perhaps one of your front teeth was longer than the other; it's easier for all parties involved to slightly sand down the incisal edge (the part your bite with) to match the other tooth. This way there's much less upkeep over time for the patient. The other option to achieve a more symmetric result is either a porcelain veneer or to use composite material (what is also used for fillings) to lengthen and shape the incisal edge; the latter has the caveat that the orthodontists don't do this themselves (a general dentist would) and that it can discolor over time, making the demarcation between the natural tooth and the composite material fairly visible. Morphologically, the maxillary central incisors (two front teeth on the top) are meant to be longer, but not by much, compared to the maxillary lateral incisors (the smaller and shorter tooth right beside each central tooth). Patients who get braces tend to expect a near-perfect result, and it's the orthodontist's job to get as close as is possible with the case they were given. A lot of patients would actually complain to their orthodontists that they hadn't paid enough attention (or any variation of this) if they had not made sure everything was even before the completion of their case, particularly if the ortho. knew that aesthetics were a concern for the patient. CYA is sadly a large part of the healthcare system, not just the dental side of it. I'm sorry for the long-winded explanation above, I just wanted to make sure everything was clear. For reference, I'm currently in dental school in the United States.

Its weird that insurance won't do anything when its affecting your mental health/causing you to have an ED. I wonder if they would agree to cpvering something it they see its affecting your mental health and causing an ED. I really hope it gets better for you, its must be so difficult to deal with when its affecting your self asteem so much.

not sure if you have, but you can look into going to a dental college! the prices are cheaper as the students are working towards their degrees and need patients to work on! everything is monitored! even if you end up just doing a partial denture or something else in the mean time! just a thought! i hope everything gets better for you! :) i also would say, if you haven’t already, to research a proper oral health care routine when having whichever type of ED you have to ensure you are protecting your natural teeth :)

I was told I needed braces as a kid because of a very slight overbite, it was expensive so I never got them and really don't regret it. My cousin spent like a decade with braces and I never had any problems with my teeth or my bite 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have what you would consider rather straight teeth. They look like this, sure, but they are not. There's so much more to whether you need braces or not than what you can see in the mirror. You cannot see where one tooth might be slightly in the wrong place and put way too much pressure on another tooth under it. You cannot see how maybe your arches are too aligned when you upper teeth should not rest completely on your bottom ones etc. But you need to go to an orthodontist for a consultation not a dentist if you want a proper diagnosis. A dentist has no business talking about braces beyond suggesting you might wanna visits an orthodontist.

I have a very "people oriented" dentist (I'm from the Czech Republic) and she usually goes for cheap options and tells me I have nice teeth (I have 3 fillings, a veneer on a tooth which I broke a half off of and I don't have all my teeth perfectly white AND I have slightly crooked L2, R2, L3, R3 which isn't very visible). But man, social media really fucked me up. Thanks to it, the US teeth standards are getting into Europe and it kinda scares me. My dentist has never suggested me braces. To her my teeth are fine. But looking at us teeth standards and more and more people here trying tacky whacky teeth whitening things has made me very self conscious in the past. Nowadays I'm pretty grateful for what I have. I *only* shaved off some enamel on 2 of my teeth, cause I was trying to whiten them. Now I have to get it sorted from time to time, my dentist puts some magic water on it and it stops being sensitive. I'd never use a whitening strip.

An orthodontist is the one who should tell you about treatment not a general dentist. Sometimes braces are recommended because of "bite" issues, which can put more pressure on the wrong type of teeth, muscles and even TMJ ( which can lead to continuous headaches, specially when waking up, some people even experience pain ....) If it just for esthetic reasons and that wasn't your priority, no real point on getting them.

Me too! I have a bunch of discoloration on my four front teeth where the braces used to be. No dentist could fix it, and i tried a lot of treatments. It's the thing I'm most insecure about. A dentist berated me about it once, took pictures and said she'd send my case to a seminar because she couldn't see a solution. I sure love dentists, let me tell ya 🙃

Those spots were not because of the braces or the cement. They were caused by not cleaning properly around the brackets. The plaque buildup causes the stain that cannot be removed.

@@dianejackson7601 these spots are most likely white spots caused to the enamel demineralizing! they can be caused do to improper cleaning/removal of biofilm and plaque buildup around the brackets! it isn’t stain though because demineralized enamel loses its glossy appearance, sadly :(

I’ve heard dentists refer to veneers as a “cosmetic crown” since it goes over a natural tooth as a medically necessary crown would.

There are several uses to crowns and no they aren't always necessary. There are crowns that also has the function for non-essential situations, like golden crowns and it's not shaven down. I have one gold crown around one tooth and crowns for canal treatment. She never claimed in the video that they are the same either.

I have a friend who has needed veneers because of a problem with degenerative enamel, so there is a non-cosmetic medical basis for them.

No implants are NOT the norm. If one has a tooth that can be restored after RCT the doc will certainly try to give them a crown. Bruh do you even know how painful and time consuming implants are? I mean i can't even.

Like legit why would one pull out a tooth that can be restored and then put a screw into the gum wait for 90 days and then put the implant when one cab put a crown on the natural tooth. Smh

Back in the days golden tooth implants were much cheaper than ceramic ones. My parents also had them before they could afford ceramic implants. I'm not even sure if you can still get golden implants here in Europe these days

Occasionally gold full coverage crowns are still done typically if the patient or Dr prefers it. But standard in America now is zirconia/porcelain/ceramic types that are more aesthetic and tooth colored

My grandfather had some, too, and grandmother, I think? And I am in Russia. So it probably was a standard for dental care for longer in Eastern Europe, than in the US.

mine too! it's genetic! people are wrong for judging yellow teeth tbh. my dentist himself doesnt have perfect teeth and has discouraged me multiple times from getting mine whitened as it damages your enamel. where i live, though, tooth standards arent as high, so im fine, and im sorry you feel insecure about yours :(( i hope you're able to feel good about them as they are or get them whitened in the future!! but you're not alone 💖

I've always had slightly yellow teeth, with funny patches of brighter white. I was worried about it when I was younger, but thankfully I had a good dentist who assured me I was perfectly healthy with strong, functional teeth. The yellow colour is totally normal, and the white patches are just calcium deposits. That dentist gave me so much confidence, and since then I have never really worried what other people think, and I've been able to resist suggestions from less ethical dentists to undergo whitening procedures. I know it's not always easy, but you don't have to change your appearance or risk your health to fit any beauty standard!

I still remember the horrible descriptions of his mouth from history class! He must have stunk so much but getting a kiss from the king was revered.

This is why I got a virtical Lebret piercing. Threw my lip but NOT into the mouth . So it makes no contact with my teeth

i’ve had this same issue and am also finally managing to brush my teeth every day in my twenties... i still wonder why that particular aspect of personal hygiene seems so much harder to maintain than the rest? but i’m glad to see someone with the same struggle manage to have a brushing routine! hope it keeps going well!

I've been going through the same thing lately. I'm reaching my twenties soon. These pass months my depression has gotten worst again and I felt like I was failing at life again, because I felt like my progression just disappeared so quickly. At the start of this I would only brush like 3 times a week. Although now I'm able to brush once daily. I know it's a struggle ,but I hope we can all get to the point where this won't be difficult for us anymore.

Im so glad you're doing better now, im also depressed and likely autistic do sometimes struggle with showering because of my energy levels so i can understand that it takes effort to establish and keep up with a routine. Just a warning though if you notice sensitivity or pain with temperature then you might want to get your enamel checked. Also I notice my teeth and jaw also tend to hurt when im stressed because i tend to clench my jaw a lot and grind my teeth (probably a stim), I even do it in my sleep which has caused a tmj issue (my jaw clicks when i bite) and a lot of teeth/jaw pain and even headeaches. My mouth and nose look a little crooked becaus of it too so watch out for that because its soooo annoying to deal with

The bottom halves of my two front teeth are fake, and I've always thought that if the rest of my teeth get yellow over time, I'll be glad that the most visible part of my teeth will remain this one shade! lol

The thing is, it seems to be glossed over that when one whitens their natural teeth, that all of the shades of the natural tooth lighten, so yes, the restorative material will not whiten with the natural tooth. It is also not recommended to use whitening agents on restorative work, i.e. fillings, crowns, dentures, veneers, etc., as the abrasives in the whitening agent will wear down and/or scratch the material…

@@lepotatoes Yes. When I used braces I already had veneers (but they were not ceramic), and I have photos to prove it. I have a LONG history with dental procedures that I didn't really need because of an unethical dental treatment.

Yeah that kind of happens when u don't use retainers. I had braces for 6-7 years or so (with a little break in there) and a jaw surgery so I definitely wear my retainer approximately 13 out of 14 days, cus I didn't undergo all that to go back to the teeth before (not that my surgery would suddenly reverse hahah, but the teeth would def change position)

Well, then wear your retainers? Must be nice to throw out money for things again and again.

Why do so many people have an air of coldness / rudeness / mockery in the comments?😥💔 If I did not used them daily, it´s because they broke, and the next one I had my mother boiled them ( for disinfecting purposes) without knowing that that only takes away their original shape. I saved money, but when I had the enought money, my teeth had already moved.

I totally remember him having braces so I was confused when I saw his photo … I did a quick google search and I think you may need to straighten your teeth before you can get veneers in some cases, so maybe that’s what Niall did.

Every country has a different culture and obsession. What we care about in America will obviously not be the same in a country in Europe or Asia. What they care about beauty-wise is extremely different than what you guys like in Europe. Idk why people don’t understand this

Omg are we the same person? Had braces in second grade for no reason then did another set years later expanders and all. I wonder what my mouth would look like today without all that, I have terrible tmj too. It's a high quality problem so to speak but still so annoying. Of course I never wore retainers either so have had to spend thousands trying to fix them up again ruining my credit 😂

Christ, same. Now that I think about it I never had cavities as a kid but as a teen and young adult I have so many. I got gaps from braces too and now my tongue presses against my teeth where it didn't used to and will get sores from rubbing. I hated my braces so much, hate what they did to my teeth, hate how id probably like my smile more if I hadn't had them. Many of my teeth have migrated since anyway. I'm glad my little brother wasn't forced to have them. Braces absolutely should not be pushed onto kids for just aesthetic reason or because "you'll be happy about it when you're an adult"

Reading this as someone from the Netherlands gives me yet another reason to avoid living in the US holy shit. Most orthodontists and dentists will be honest with you and tell you whether you will NEED braces for dental health reasons, or for purely aesthetic reasons. I needed mine for health reasons as my adult teeth grew in so crooked that I would never have been able to clean them properly. But about half of the kids in high school did not have braces or just minimal braces not because they couldn't afford them, but because they weren't needed.
