Listen to another of the tragic calls made on Sept. 11, 2001. Melissa Doi was working in the World Trade Center that day. Read more here: www.bnd.com/news/local/article...
I'm about her age, and as someone who has been diagnosed with two separate cancers in the past year and a half, I can say that when you truly say those words and mean it, its as ordinary as instant oatmeal. death is no big whoop, unless you are living in your head, then it seems like a big deal. I saved about 200mg of oxycontin and some anti nausea pills from my first surgery, and am going to use it if/when things get really bad, which I hope isn't for several years or never. I even told my family to prepare for it. im just happy I had a good life with good people who care about me, and am ready to go when its my time. still really sad though, and im sure its harder in some ways when its so sudden like this, but death is nothing to be afraid of so long as you are actually living your life. we all take that dreaded step eventually.
“ Tell her that I love her , she was the best mother a person could ever have , and that I will see her in the next world “ .... a lot of people missed that last part ...
You’re right, I heard that last part, “I’ll see her in the next world,” too…it’s shocking to hear that, but not shocking at the same time. Shocking because I can’t even begin to imagine what she felt as she was gasping for air and knowing her life was coming to a sudden end. She had just turned 32 on September 1st, and I just found out that she did evacuate initially and even made it down to the 44th floor. But took an elevator to go back up to the 78th floor after it was announced that the building was safe and people should return to wherever they were previously. OMG, that’s just horrifying beyond belief and tragic!!!! Now her “I’ll see her in the next world” will forever be stuck in my head.
craig burkhart not all. Some people had asthma attacks, panic attacks, trauma, disabled, just too slow, injured. It slowed down evacuation. There were many people almost out the building but just didnt make it
this is why i can't stand people who judge "jumpers" or who don't count them as real victims. no one went to work that day planning to die. but when you're mere feet above such an inferno, with no escape, and the flames and smoke and unbearable heat are closing in on you... you can't even begin to imagine what you would do in such a nightmare scenario. RIP to the innocent wonderful people who were murdered that day.
Every time I think I am having a bad day, I remember Melissa’s call and my brain comes back to reality that my life isn’t so bad! Hearing her call breaks my heart!
Don’t slam yourself in your head, because you didn’t die in 9/11. This doesn’t mean, that you don’t have problems too. Comparing yourself to other people is bad for your mental health. It is a Way of gaslighting yourself. But yeah, it also breaks my heart
“Tell her that she was the best mother a person could have. And that I love her with all my heart and soul. And that I’ll see her in the next world. Ok?…. I love her, and she was the best mother a person could ever have” 💔💔
Well happy 32nd late Birthday to you friend... Your age triggered hurricane Katrina for me... I was 32 when Katrina hit, an like a jackass I decided to ride it out.. But I remember when sitting on the tip top of my roof when the water was 14 feet, I said to myself, damn George Bush the president has 2 major disasters in 4 years.. 9/11 an Katrina
Thought I’d heard her wrong, though I know I didn’t, because its just so unfathomable to hear and know how excruciating and agonizing her situation was…trapped high up in an inferno and dying…
Pink Mcb That is their job, to try and get people as calm as possible while they wait to get help while also collecting information (they are mandated to)!
As opposed tooo? “Okay what I want you to do it panic! And breathe extremely rapidly, hyperventilate if need be!! Just keep screaming” “and good luck bye” would that have been better? Lol
Have to remember this was the first tower that collapsed. A lot of them thought they might be rescued. They didnt expect the building to collapse. Now for those trapped in the second tower that collapsed, they had it BAD because surely they knew the other tower came down and then im very sure it hit them that there was little hope for them. Many people in the first tower had hope until the end.
@@JJ-iq8mi I just can't imagine what it's like being this life-threatening situation that day. If I was in the Twin Towers on 9/11, I would've been tearful like she was.
You think? Hmmm- In a building that is on fire, on a floor that is incredibly hot, in a room full of smoke, and you say she sounded as though she was terrified for her life. Wow!
Every time I think about this phone call, I start crying. For me, Melissa is the face of the victims. Every victim suffered so much and this phone call makes the event so real to me, given I was weeks old when 9/11 took place
@@jp1430 The first clip of Melissa’s phone call (the first 4 minutes) and Kevin Cosgroves’ phone call are heartbreaking but this clip is astonishingly heartbreaking. I will never be able to imagine and comprehend what the victims went through that day
Glad to see that the younger ones haven't forgotten and take the time to remember these people and their lives. :) Lots of hope for the future and a better world.
I hope her mother got to hear her daughter say this . I truly do . As scary as that is to hear your daughter going through that , just to hear your daughters last words to you would give you so much more closure so I pray she heard this message she had for her mom
It makes me angry that she had made it out and returned to her office when told it was safe, only to be killed by that second plane. RIP Melissa. We’re all thinking about you.
Her composure and clarity while speaking to the operator during such dire circumstances both astonishes and inspires me. All while certian it meant the end of her life. 2:24 - wow. Definition of bravery and heroism. RIP
? She was not composed and not calm, and there’s nothing wrong with that; most people would be reacting the way she did if they were certain they would die.
I feel like the operator was doing her best under the circumstances but what Melissa, an intelligent, smart woman, needed was some humanity. Not the standard by the book responses. She knew, felt this was her last moments on earth. Her fears were being dismissed and she knew better. Bless her, so courageous.
I used to get so upset when I listened to these tapes and hear the dispatchers say, “stay calm”. Now, I think they say it really to help calm their own nerves because it’s so devastating hearing people go through tragedies like this. 🙏🏽
Well, not to mention normally they’re trying to get relevant information from the caller so that they know how to address the situation. Or they’re trying to keep the caller on the line until help arrives. That’s why they ask these questions repeatedly that may sound dumb to us.
@@PianoDisneygal10 Exactly. They need to constantly know what's going on at the scene to accurately give possible life saving information to first responders. I work in an ER and I explain to patients that the reason we all keep asking them about symptoms, daily activities ext is to get the most clear picture we can to give the best treatment we can. It may come off as annoying, or like we haven't fully paid attention to the story, but we're really just assessing the situation as thoroughly as possible. Kudos to all the operators out there.
Well outside of any other detail- there is fire & alot of smoke they need to keep the person calm so they dont hyperventilate & use up any/all oxygen left in the room/space or pass out/die from smoke inhalation before possible rescue
I just found this video today, Mother’s day, and was listening to this poor woman telling the operator how much she loved her mom and that she was best mother anyone could have. 😭😭😭😭
Any person who makes bad comments about this beautiful girl’s last words is soulless , she kept her dignity God bless her , my heart breaks for her , to have the strength of will to speak of her mother in such a tender way at that moment., ask your self , how would you or I fair on the same field? She is a beautiful brave soul and descent people will remember her ! Peace to you beautiful Girl❤️
She mentions several times to say prayers. They are not counselors. They are there to help them conserve oxygen in an emergency situation. That requires calmness. Saying, "Can I read you your last rights" doesn't help a victim.
It’s now September 11, 2020...we’ve gone through a lot..but this is the one thing we will always remember as one. Rest In Peace for the people that have died, firefighters, police,ER personnel, everyone in that point of time.
Wow Eri, Aisawa must have taught you a lot about American culture! Thanks for taking the time to be so respectful.. that day was really rough.. and yeah 2020 has sucked But rip to all the victims of 9/11 attacks 🌹
I will forever believe in my heart that when she heard voices it was Stanley Praimnath and Brian Clark after Brian saved Stanley. In another interview with Brian Clark he said he thought he heard someone yell for help when heading down in that same area.
They must have been just a few floors down from the impact zone which is horrendous because they were so near yet so far. No way they could have gotten to her even if she got their attention. Poor lady I feel panicky just thinking about being in her situation. It's not something anyone will ever be able to comprehend. Just awful.
@@Katie-rx8ql 83 was in the impact zone. The plane struck floors 77-85. So she was right there in the heart of the destruction. It must have been a nightmare.
To be fair to the dispatcher I don't think anything she could say would be possible to calm her down. Melissa was dying and she knew it and I have to commend her for how composed she actually was considering her situation. I would not be able to string a sentence together or else would just be screaming.
I felt the dispatcher did a good job in this situation. Even when she said infuriating things, it helped to distract Melissa. I read some weird explanation that the dispatcher shouldn't have given her "false hope" because it could keep her from "accepting her fate" but for the love of shit, this is the last moments of someone's life. Have hope to the end, I don't see that as a bad thing. And it's very likely Orio Palmer, the fireman who made it to the point of impact and fixed an elevator, actually was in her area at that moment. If the towers hadn't collapsed, he could have saved her and hundreds of other people. I wish more people knew about what he did. He identified the open stairwell and could have led them all down to 44 where he'd fixed the elevator. There was hope for her in that phone call, a fireman was leading a team to get them all. No one knew the towers would fall.
@@anamariagutierrez2019 at the end, she was knocked out making snoring like noises. Which they say is normal. And she wouldn't respond back. She eventually passed out. I read the complete transcript somewhere. I cant remember the site though.
@@chenellebeautytv do you mean she didn’t jump but simply went unconscious from the extremely heavy smoke and died? Because from reading the other comments, sounded like she jumped.
@@CrystallyLavender no she definitely didn't jump. She suffocated from the smoke and passed out, that's why we later hear snoring sounds which can happen in tragedies like this. The full recording actually shows a lot more and was kept with the family and during a court case on 9/11 for other potential hijackers who are said would have been involved but other planes were forced to land and not air after hearing about Flight 11 and Flight 175 crashing into the World Trade Center. Got to remember as well the amount of smoke they were breathing in, the heat and possibly breathing in that burning fuel. She was a floor above the impact zone and probably in that darkness from smoke she didn't risk searching for the stairway, understandably out of possibly thinking the floor could collapse in on them, etc. Remember, a lot of victims were blinded by the smoke and in the chaos some didn't actually "jump" out of the windows but actually fell. Tragic, They had to break windows to get air in and sometimes accidents happen. In other cases it was about a needed action, some were so desperate they couldn't see help coming and feared being burned to death so jumped willingly to be put out of their misery. Never again! RIP.
Good God! I am heartbroken! Hearing the victim’s despair and the emergency responder’s conversation is gut wrenching! I am impressed with the calm voice. It couldn’t have been easy to maintain composure at that time. I pray for all the dear souls who perished, innocent victims of evil. With this brutal assault we are forced to realize our vulnerability and become increasingly vigilant. This must never happen again! Appreciate the survivors who bravely and in spite of their own injuries and fear assisted other occupants to safety. The first responders, God bless them! With a calamity as this, how could they have prepared better? But they were magnificent and rescued and recovered as efficiently and courageously as possible. May God bless them.🇺🇸
This was a credit to the 911 operator as well, for staying on the phone with her. I would hope to have someone so sweet on the line with me, plus making sure that her mother got the message that she was who was on her mind at the end. Hey, if her family gets this message, please know that I truly do pray 🙏 for you.
Yes I think the 911 operator did a very good job. She was calm and professional altought there was no much she could do for her unfortunately in that moment.. this phone call is heartbreaking
I sure miss u Melissa wish u were still here with us and I know u r in heaven no pain no suffering habing a blast up there and I know your smile shines bright upon watching over us I think about u everyday and I know u will guide those that love u and miss u hope one day I can meet u in heaven wen my time comes your an amazing angel now and your with God save me a spot up there ❤️
She made it down to the 44th floor and then went up the elevator because they made an announcement that it was safe 😡- just wished she kept going down those stairs. Rip sweet angel. I can’t stop crying after hearing this.
whenever i watch videos from 9/11, I think about the people in the tower looking out the window at how close safety is...but how they can't get to it. Beyond heartbreaking.
This is absolutely heartbreaking.. Gut wrenching.. I can't imagine what she and the poor people trapped in both the towers went through.. God bless to them and there families.. May Jesus christ look after them in heaven xxx
"Tell her that she was the best mother a person could ever have and that I love her with all my heart and soul and that I will see her in the next world."
This hurts my heart over and over again. Her voice and experience is that of so many that perished on that day. I pray for her family and all that experienced a loss on that dreadful day.
My teacher was teaching us about 9/11 today and she said that she was this girls advisor at northwestern University. A year after 9/11 she heard her voice on the tv and it was very traumatic for her to hear it.
If im a 911 dispatcher i'm might be fired on that day, if im taking that call i might get panicked and crying on that situation. Kudos to this dispatcher she did not leave her in the very end, rest in peace...
This is the scariest and most horrific recollection of that day...a poor citizen suffering feeling like she is gonna die..a 911 dispatcher trying to do her job..knowing the poor girl is doomed..unfathomable
Thats because this almost the full recording which was not supposed to released. The first part is the part made public. Somehow this was leaked im surprised it's still up.
This breaks my heart because I would say those things on the call, too. I love my mama so much. I feel so awful for her. I hope there's such a thing as Heaven and her and her mum can meet again.
Remember that if your mom finds a time in her life where she needs family. I'm staying with my mom instead of her going into a nursing home, even though she told her friends that she took me in, in exchange for doing chores. I realize she has alzheimer's and can't remember that my dad died 18 years ago, let alone why I'm here, but I don't care. I'm keeping her out of a lonely situation.
@@Jennifr1966 Where I’m from we dont leave our parents at all, ever. We stay with them till we’re married. When they get old they stay with us. We never leave their side and they never leave ours. I’m happy your mom got a child like you, whose willing to stay with her. I’ve had a lot of family from the west, and them just leaving their parents in nursing homes is unfathomable to us. Always remember, what goes around comes around. The universe will reward you in some way or the other. I wish you and your mom a long and healthy life, filled with a lot of happiness❤️
@@sbaromski She died because a bunch of sick individuals killed in the name of their religion. Not all religious individuals are like that. But I agree, she did die for no good reason.
My heart screams not only for the victims and the families but also for the first responders and dispatchers who had to try to calm people as they knew they'd be dead soon.
Think of her mom, What she may have felt when she listened to this audio. My left side of chest feels like it is under a very heavy weight whenever i hear this.
OMG. I am ashamed to say that I have never heard this poor woman’s story before now. It is September 2020, and I am just now hearing about the final moments of her life. I cried. I cried a lot today. Listening to the stories of people who should be here with us today. The horrific, unimaginable experiences of those who died that day. EVERYBODY should hear their final moments. This is how we NEVER FORGET. And this is why we must NEVER FORGIVE.
This is so hard..in the original there are some parts that are cut out toward the end, and it sounds like Melissa was witnessing people with her jumping, and was thinking about having to jump herself. The dispatcher tells her not to do it and says Oh my God. It being this graphic is probably the reason for the lengthy court battle which resulted in the release of the tape, with these parts edited. She was right above the impact. RIP
Grace Burns It was the original edited version. The original unedited version was never released. I heard the full edited version about a year ago. For some reason they’ve taken that down and shortened it even more. I can’t find that longer version anywhere anymore.
@@shannane5171 that's really sad, knowing when the victim died, do you know where you found the original? I hate to ask I'm just trying to give my respect to all these victims out there
@@l35104Create it is on RU-vid again. But it’s very very sad I must warn you, probably the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. You can find it by searching “Melissa Doi full recording” it’s under that title. But it has most of Melissa’s side censored by bleeps but you hear the dispatcher. But you can still hear Melissa every now and then when the bleeps fail to cover her side up perfectly, you can hear her dying 😞... Even though her side is censored it’s still the worst thing I’ve heard. And this clip we have here is uncensored but in the original full recording this part is censored. I’ve listened to it all for the first time today. I’ve only heard the famous beginning clip before today. All I can think about today is poor Melissa 😞. I didn’t even know her but listening to these recordings I feel as if I’m listening to a close friend or sister pass away 😢…
@@lassesuurmunne8340 could you please tell me what you mean by you can “hear her die?” Do you mean that she decided to jump? Because another comment is just read said she was witnessing others jump and was going to jump, but the 911 dispatcher told her not to, but she died. So I don’t know if that means the dispatcher heard her jump somehow? Have never even heard of her and this tape till I clicked on the video just now, so I really would like to know, before she decides whether I want to listen to the full version. Also would like to know why they bleeped out Melissa’s side so much in the full version? It’s just talking, albeit extremely horrific circumstances, and I’m just confused why so much needed to be covered up if it’s a full version?
RIP Melissa Cándida Doi (September 1, 1969 - September 11, 2001) 😔🙏 I can’t imagine Evelyn Alderete’s pain on what the pain feels like of being all alone as a single mother after losing an only child from a tragedy like 9/11 👩🏽 My thoughts and prayers are out with you and your family impacted by this horrific tragedy Melissa and Evelyn ❤️❤️
*_I totally understood Melissa’s frustration!! I wanted to smack the dispatcher too!! But I know she is just trying to small talk to calm her down because there’s nothing she could do.. I feel so bad.._* 😭😭😭
The dispatcher did great. There was nothing she could do. There was no solution the fire was right below her and she was trapped. The most important thing is the dispatcher stayed with her through her final moments and took and relayed the message as she said she would.
After 9/11 I think we all looked at our lives differently. I cherish my family even more than I used to because you never know when your last day will be. RIP to everyone that died that day.
From what I gather she and many others worked on that floor with their company. Hard to believe they stuck around after the first plane, if they'd made any attempt to go down they would have missed the impact. Shame that the Port Authority would tell people to return to their work, and assure them everything was secure. After what happened in 1993, that was awful planning (or lack of), and cost a lot of people their lives.
Yeah, don’t think she was in denial at all, just in complete and utter disbelief because it was so sudden, which any human being would’ve felt if you suddenly realize that your life is ending in minutes, in the most horrific way possible. She actually initially evacuated and made her way down to the 44th floor when it was announced that the building was safe and people should return to their offices, so she got into an elevator and went back up to the 78th floor and then the second plane hit just below her. Tragic…😭😭
@@CrystallyLavender that’s just awful. I wish people had not listened to that. I saw some footage of guards literally blocking people from going down to the lobby. The lesson here is that in those situations you must just push you’re way out. Those guards don’t have authority over your life. What a huge loss.
Melissa did get to speak to her mother from the 44th floor when she was evacuating. If she had kept going she would still be alive. Sadly she made a tragic decision to go back up because the south tower intercom told employees it was safe to do so. Bear in mind this all happened prior to the plane hitting. They were evacuating due to the north tower plane strike. Melissa made it back up to 78th floor where took the elevator to the 83rd floor. It is at this moment the plane hits the south tower

Way better than the way Cosgrove's whining about his situation probably wishing that 9/11 operator were in his situation when he compared that 9/11 operator earning minimum wage being in "an air conditioned building"; at least this woman had giant balls to accept her unfortunate fate with something classy and spiritual to say
