Tears of the Kingdom came out to much fanfare earlier this year, however, while the story started and ended pretty well, there were some major plot holes in the game, and today I’d like to take a close look at them. This includes the lack of an ancient hero, what happened to the Sheikah tech, plus many more as we dive into the 10 major plot holes in Zelda's Tears of the Kingdom.

The ancient hero was still born LONG after Raru died, Raru fought Ganondorf and the ancient hero fought the first Calamity Ganon. Link and Zelda beat the second Calamity Ganon.

It didn't bother me that the master sword broke from ganon, I just assumed that Gannon with the secret stone is way more powerful than any Gannon that we have ever seen. But what bothered me is that after you get the master sword back when it has been bathing in sacred light for thousands of years, it should absolutely obliterate any normal enemy that it comes across. But instead, it basically acts like any other normal weapon, and even has to still use a cool down period From normal use

The fact the Master Sword broke in the first place isnt this suprising to me. In A Link to the Past you can give the Master Sword to mortal black smiths and let them temper it. The Master Sword may be immune to magic due to its own pure powers of Repelling evil but it is not immune to physics, you can melt it or heat it up to make it softer and reshape its blade temporarly

@@Chris-gx1ei It also mysteriously vanished by the events of the original The Legend of Zelda on the NES despite been the so called "Blade of Evil's Bane" so one may wonder if the Hero even _needs_ the sword to fight the reincarnations of Ganondorf considering it's redundancy to defeat Ganondorf in some games in the timeline (Zelda 1 and 2, the Oracle games and Four Sword Adventures).

@@javiervasquez625 Considering the Master Sword is lorewise the Weapon with the Most Holy Powers, I would say yes, you definitely should rely on this Sword of you wanna kill Demon Kings. About what you need against Ganon... this simply relies on two things: His Power Level and the ammount he uses on Durrability. Tears of the Kingdom Ganondorf put most of his Power into the destructive Potential, but screwing on Durrability, making him vulnerable to even a bunch of chopsticks. Then we have Twilight Princess Ganondorf and Wind Waker Ganondorf. Wind Wakee Ganondorf couldnt even be hurt with an unpowered Master Sword, while Twilight Princess Ganondorf suffered a wound from a Different Holy Sword, yet survived thus actually lethal attack... The Ordon Sword doesnt even have collision, the developers literally want you to use the Master Sword. Then we have Yuganon, Yuga combined With Ganon who ad posession of the Triforce of Power and later also stealing the Triforce of Wisdom - however with both ToP only and ToP and ToW combined he can still be harmed by anything you have, not only the Master Sword. Then A Link to the Past Ganon who is a Potentially Omnipotent God at this point cannot be harmed by anything except a spin attack fron the Master Sword or a regular swipe from the Golden Sword - which is the Master Sword upgraded twice and collecting enough holy powers from the Great Fairy in the Golden Pyramid. Yeah, Ganondorf's Power is pretty much a mystery if we measure it by Durrability.

The most puzzling thing to me was how Link was wearing his new tunic at the start of the game whilst examining the Hyrule castle dungeons with Zelda It was only revealed to be available to him after Link had read Zelda's diary in the well. He then went to the throne room in the castle to retrieve it.🤔

Link's Arm: It was damaged beyond repair from a direct Primary Source Gloom attack which also poisoned his body. This is the whole reason that Link has to collect the light orbs, to help purify his body, like a cancer. Once that Gloom is expelled, the body can then be healed. Rauru used his spiritual arm as a temporary skin graft, until the wound could heal.

It's Rauru's stone that Zelda picks up when the seal gives up. The simplest explanation I've seen and share for the Master Sword corrosion is that the Secret Stones are simply that powerful with the appropriate host. The Triforce itself is apparently within Zelda, which showed up as a symbol as her sealing power awakened in BOTW. In TOTK we see the symbol on her right hand as she heals the sword. The sword's inconsistent resistance of course has gameplay reason albeit a rather lazy one, to avoid too big of an exception in their weapon degradation system. It's still the one that slays Ganon ultimately.

re: fragile Master Sword It's stated by Mineru that the Zonai Secret Stones were created by the gods themselves. With that in mind: Ganondorf's Secret Stone amplified his power of darkness to a level that could rival any other being who wielded a god-created relic, which includes the Triforce and the Master Sword, so in that context it's really not surprising that the Master Sword shattered when it met a force that was equal but opposite to it re: Ganondorf killing Sonia Zelda DID (kinda) warn Rauru that Ganondorf had evil intentions, and Rauru stated that he knew about them (in the A Show Of Fealty memory when Zelda says she's nervous about Ganondorf and Rauru brushes off her concerns with "I am well aware of that man's evil nature"[...]"there is nothing to worry about"). Rauru's fault here was that he was just so egotistical that he thought he would be able to keep tabs on Ganondorf at all times. He repeats this egotistical line of thought twice more before he seals Ganondorf: once when discussing what's to be done about the Demon King with the Sages and he says "our only hope is for me to defeat the Demon King", thinking he can defeat Ganondorf by himself even after having had to flee from him earlier, and again when he tells Zelda "that was a future where you never appeared in this world. And you are here now", completely disregarding what Zelda had JUST said about Ganondorf surviving to her time and believing that they would successfully defeat the Demon King the next day. Also Ganondorf definitely knew Rauru was watching him and that the invite to the castle was a way to keep tabs on him, so he did all his evil deeds while at the castle with the Puppet Zelda until there was an opening for him to act (one of the tablets in Messages From An Ancient Era details a ghost story about a "strange lady" that looks like Zelda wandering the castle at night, but this lady has "no light in her eyes" and Zelda doesn't remember taking these walks, meaning that this "strange lady" was the Puppet Zelda)

Reading this comments makes me angry that Nintendo didn't allow the _present_ Era Rauru been more relevant to the present events of the game as i'm sure we would all have loved to see Rauru aknowledge his mistakes back in the past in order for him to do penance for them by assisting Link after he fuses his hand at the start of the game. Speaking out loud all of Rauru's misgivings during his rule as "the first king of Hyrule" could have served as justification for him to become Link's newest companion as he uses this opportunity to accompany him in his quest in order to *redeem* his mistakes underestimating Ganondorf in the past. Wasted opportunity Nintendo...

The shieka tech has been dismantled and repurposed. The game shows us by visual cues. Think about it like this, the divine beasts are essentially walking nukes that had been possessed for a century causing mayhem in their respective regions. Do you really think the people in those regions would want to keep these death machines, not knowing if they could be possessed again?

Tears of the Kingdom director Hidemaro Fujibayashi outright confirmed in a recent interview that all the Sheikah technology (minus the Guardian mysteriously lying on top of Purah's Lab) simply _vanished_ following Link's battle with Calamity Ganon leading the people of Hyrule to simply "shove it aside" as a casual event which happens in the Zelda world making them all not care that weapons of mass destruction would just up and vanish without explanation whatsoever. This interview given by Fujibayashi only shows how little Nintendo cares about storytelling with the Zelda games as any kind of plotpoint is easily tossed aside in order for them to shove in a new plotpoint regarding the newly introduced cool Zonai technology which happens to be the new "gimmick" in Tears of the Kingdom compared to the outdated Sheikah technology one from Breath of the Wild.

Think an example is the first one about the tapestry, which had nothing to do with the story of TotK. It was the first Calamity, not the inception of the demon king story. Granted it’s weird they didn’t explain anything else about that period, while it became a known thing. But that tapestry was of 10.000 yrs ago. The period Zelda went to was long before that
@javiervasquez625
@javiervasquez625 5 месяцев назад
@@gregpl9363 It's still a mystery as there barely any _context_ regarding that tapestry showing a figure which supposedly is "Link" and 4 Champions whose appereance does not ressemble that of the Champions and Sages from past and future Eras making one wonder if they were of a different race entirely or there's "something" happening to them. The tapestry is so ambiguous in it's depiction of past events that it becomes impossible to ascertain what actually happened back then aside from Calamity Ganon showing up one day and getting sealed/defeated by a Triforce powered Zelda, Zonai looking Link and 4 alien looking Champions piloting the 4 Divine Beasts.
@gregpl9363
@gregpl9363 5 месяцев назад
Yeah true, coming back full circle to the fact that it’s called “the legend of Zelda” yada yada. But Impa did explain the tapestry being from the first calamity, a force of nature or evil without a smart malefactor (just like dark beast Ganon). So this was at least a good while beyond the one we see in TotK with demon king ganondorf in his physical form being the big bad. But timeline wise it’s very hard to piece things together, it’s also weird that this is not the Ganondorf we know from the previous entries but one that predates him (which is kind of odd). And Zelda going back in time that far, having the master sword on her head, must mean that she has been soaring the skies during all the other entries except for maybe minish cap and skyward sword, making it so that there are two master swords in existence. Might be a few things Nintendo purposely retconned or even forgot. Same for the Zonai being called “ a savage primitive tribe” in BotW, but in TotK they are referred to as Gods. So what happened?! The architecture in Faron which eventually turned to look nothing like the Zonai architecture from TotK, so was that all established during Rauru’s era? Or the Zonai that came first and predate him. Maybe the hero in the tapestry is a descendant of Rauru and Sonia? So many questions left open and we probably won’t get answers to them seeing as Nintendo has stated to move on from the botw/TotK era and head into a new direction, but never know I guess.

@@gregpl9363 Rauru's Hyrule is a *REFOUNDATION* of the kingdom thousands of years AFTER the end of the timelines as proven by the inconsistent _geography_ of the Era of the Wild's Hyrule compared to the many past Hyrules seen across the entire timeline. With this in mind it's clear that the Ganondorf seen in Tears of the Kingdom is a _reincarnation_ just like the one seen in Four Sword Adventures for the GameCube. 1. Yeah that was kinda wonky, but I guess it's still possible to let it slide as "not connecting the dots", especially as the evil in BOTW was know as "The Calamity" not as "Calamity Ganon". 2. Not a plot-hole. Just no plot the story was about. The Ancient Hero appeared during the first Calamity. The ancient past in TOTK took place long before the Calamity even happened, otherwise the story would be full of retcons to it's predecessor. 3./4. While I agree, that a stronger explanation would have been great, saying there is no info in the game is wrong. 2 questlines have some tidbits about the sheikah-tech, the shrines and/or the beasts. It's definitely not much, but we get pretty much the same explanation ingame that Fujibayashi gave in an interview. 5. Not a plot-hole, just a dumb move by Rauru. 6. Again, not a plot-hole. You are missing the fact, that different races age differently. The years that have passed are exactly 7 years. 7. Again, not a plot-hole. Just an unwise move by the sages. [By now I suspect you don't know what a plot-hole is...] 8. Not a plot-hole, considering BotW already changed the lore surrounding the Master Sword and TotK just went further with it. It's not as strong as previous titles made it out to be. That's simply it. 9. I only partly agree. Because there are a lot of characters that DO remember. And little kids can be excused. And not every adult needs to remember. However, yes there are some characters that should remember, but do not, that is true and those characters are in fact in a plot-hole limbo. 10. Ok yeah, Links arm is definitely a plot-hole... I suspect it was connected to Sonias and Raurus magic, light and time reverting it back to it's glorious state... but that's just a theory... a GAME THEORY~

I think it's always thematically well integrated, only in TOTK it may be too on the nose because the gameplay is about crafting those. But in BOTW I didn't really get that aversion for Sheikah tech with mostly complaints like "the pad is just a phone!". The series has always played with contrasts of light/dark past/present advanced/primitive and we often play in the ruins of a fallen civilization. There's this trope that any technology advanced enough is indistinguishable from magic, and that was interesting already in SS. In fact the very first Zelda game was pitched to be about gathering electronic chips to build the Triforce, which obviously became a much vaguer and mythological artifact, turning more toward ancient and medieval mystery. All that to say, all of this has its place but I understand the preferences.

Are the ancient Hylians in the memories wearing clothes of zonai or hylian origin? What does ancient hylian architecture look like before zonai influence? Why do they have those Aztec looking twin dragon interactive things with Japanese style architecture? These are all questions off the top of my head. There was an invisible _Cloud Barrier_ above the skies of Hyrule (similar to the one in Skyward Sword) which the people of Rauru's Hyrule created to hide all the sky islands and Light Dragon until the events of Tears of the Kingdom took place. This is proven in Breath of the Wild whenever you spot one of the 3 dragons flying skyward before vanishing after going through a "cloud gate" which appears as they go near it.
@mkjjoe
@mkjjoe 5 месяцев назад
What Javier said, and you see these clouds as the Light Dragon goes up after the transformation. Not completely clear how they dissipate in the present, as from the Great Sky Island they clear when you end the tutorial. I've found that until you land a first time on Hyrule's surface, a thick layer remains on the horizon, but after that it's mostly gone. From a gameplay perspective I think that's simply to guide you towards Lookout Landing first, but in lore I have no idea if it has purpose. There's this girl at one of the stables who already in BOTW referred to a place in the skies, though probably a reference to Skyward Sword at first as she mentioned flying on a huge bird. But they kept her in TOTK and now it implies there was always something up there that most people couldn't see. But I'm still confused about sky islands in general. We learn the Sky Temple of Time and the Great Sky Island were sent there by the sages for the Hero, and likely all challenges are up there too. But many of the small islands seem pretty random, like scattered remnants of where the Zonai lived before and not necessarily fitting with what was on the ancient surface. So, were there always lands up there? Was it pulled from higher up? Did it partially disappear? Not sure Nintendo themselves have a definite answer, it's mostly a nice setting but it'd be cool to see it fleshed out.

@javiervasquez625 Fair points, but I'm not defending Totk like I think it's the best at story telling. For me, part of the charm of a Zelda game is the mystery. At the end of the day, I don't take the story/lore too seriously, and don't let it ruin the fact that I had fun.

@@noonesjedi8018 To me it felt jarring that she would make the vaguest connection between Calamity and Ganondorf, and only mention "a great evil" when talking about Link's heroism in the presence of Sonia & Rauru, with all the time needed to explain the most critical things she ever knew. Just like when Link knows about Zelda depending on the path you take, he will go along with people and quests but won't share this major revelation that should drastically change everyone's understanding. BOTW was much more subtle in allowing environmental storytelling, which TOTK also doesn't do so well since most of the addition is Zonai ruins on some floating rocks and all across a repetitive underground biome, and everything they bring up again like the Faron Zonai ruins or the Eighth Heroine are kinda swept under the rug or underwhelming.

I think my biggest issue with this game is that the Triforce is never even mentioned, and never appears. The symbol of the series entirely absent from the whole game. That just doesn't sit right with me.

@@javiervasquez625 Okay, so it's actually not visible at any point in the game? I feel like my point still stands. Zelda used it to single-handedly subdue Calamity Ganon for 100 years, and stop herself from aging. You'd think she could use it to some pretty high effect during the events of TotK. But nah, the Secret Stones are more important to the writers, so every other bit of lore doesn't exist.

@@NontpNonjo She has limited control over it because she neither knows she has it nor the means with which to summon it whenever she wants to hence her using it sparingly throughout both games during moments of emotional stress. Think Ocarina of Time Link who carried the Triforce of Courage on his right hand the entire game after leaving the Sacred Realm yet had no idea he had it until Sheik told him.
