Terminator: "Children of Tomorrow" - Analysis and Explanation

Combining two classic films to discover the powerful message of our future at the core.
SPOILERS for 'The Terminator' and 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day'. Obviously. Also for 'Terminator Genisys'
Time travel, war, and deadly machines hardly seem the best tools to tell a story about family, choice, and responsibility. Yet between a 'slasher' film and action-packed chase movie, James Cameron created a deep and moving account of the imminent future of man and machine.
By analyzing both films separately, then how they overlap, I create a new film 'Terminator: Children of Tomorrow' that showcases the underlying messages of compassion, learning, and change that power this movie machine.
'Digging Deeper' is a series taking a serious look (kind of) at films, themes, characters, and various aspects of filmmaking, writing, directing, and more.

So, Terminator 2 is my favorite movie. As a movie buff, I had always seen that as a sort of embarrassing factoid, driven by my own nostalgia. I never really saw it as a fine piece of art, but more like a most bizarrely heartwarming action movie. It's hard to explain. Like, I knew it wasn't that great intellectually, compared to any number of certified works of genius (Synechdoche, Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, Lawrence of Arabia, ECT), but it always felt so much greater than the sum of its boyish parts. And for my time, I'm simply not entertained more minute by minute by any other film. I've been waiting my entire life to see a 45 minute documentary explaining why these movies are so special. My life feels complete. Thank you.

Well it's not just that you made a really great interesting video, it's like you gave me my favorite movies back to me with a fresh start, so when I watch them again, I can appreciate them more. I figured I'd have that kind of experience with Citizen Kane, but not with my favorite movie Terminator 2. Yeah buddddddy

This break down of the 2 films and their symbolism is just impeccable. My mom saw terminator 2 in theaters back in 91. The next year for my 6th birthday she bought me a copy of the VHS. There was just something about this film, even though it was rated R, she knew I would love it. Little did she know how much this would effect my life. My love for cinema and storytelling had begun. The thought of time travel was such an insane concept to try and wrap my little brain around. Both the first and second film were staples of my childhood and teen years and it's so great to see that the movies have stood the test of time. During high school I had taken a few college prep courses for English and Art History; and we would have to analyze novels or works of art the way that you did for these films. What an awesome experience all these years later to find this analysis of 2 of my favorite films. Standing ovation, you guys did a great job. Crying at the end of T-2 and at the end of Return of the Jedi during Darth Vader's funeral pyre. Powerful stuff. They took what used to be a villain, someone you feared, and made you care about them at the completion of the story arc. Great jobs, thanks again

Brilliant observation about T1000 being an enemy to both man and machine; I think the lore said that Skynet was afraid to activate T1000 because it's future actions were so unpredictable and dangerous to itself, but it ultimately decided it was preferable to certain defeat & destruction at the hands of the Humans
@tubulartopher
@tubulartopher 5 лет назад
You'd think they'd explore that a bit further by having a T-1000 become self-aware and make it's own choices.

"To the liquid brain, the world was a simple puzzle box of broken reality, the hard pieces easily fitting back into the river of cosmic order. Cause and effect was the closest thing to humor in a mind so alien that even SKYNET had difficulty understanding it fully. The T1000 had deduced several possible avenues of continuing the mission in the most efficient manner possible. it was methodically following one while constantly processing the others for branching opportunities. it was fully autonomous, and barely under the allegiance of its creator, SKYNET. SKYNET had hesitated before creating this latest weapon system. There were unpredictability factors related to the liquid poly-mimetic alloy's longevity and the ability to process commands without interpolating its own priorities over those of its creator. it was so volatile a construct that only in the last throes of defeat, only when it appeared that the Resistance would finally be able to mount an offensive against the inner command components of SKYNET, even threatening the Cheyenne Mountain complex itself, did SKYNET go ahead and create the T1000. Einstein once said that God didn't play dice with the universe. SKYNET had no choice..." -Frakes, "Terminator 2"

When asked "What is your *all-time* favorite Zombie Movie" I always *unhesitantly* answer "The Terminator." On it's most *fundamental* level, it is the the story of murderous living corpse, pursuing its prey with relentless blood-lust even as its putrid flesh decays and disintegrates like The Picture of Dorian Grey, until it rises from the flames as a *literal* (Quote Cameron Himself in the 1983 Draft of the Screenplay) "Image of Death Rendered In Steel." If that's not a scary zombie movie, I don't know what is. :)

This video you made about the Terminator: " Children of Tomorrow" was amazing. All the time and effort you put in this video was astronomical. You also have many great concepts. I thought it was cool that you said the Terminators are our kids and that we created them and on how someday they will be our future. We stand together and show them that not all humans are the same and that they can still be taught and if that's the case then the human race as we know it will still be here even if we are our greatest downfall. I also thought what you said about John Conner being a child of the past as well as the future and it's because of his parents that we keep winning the war as well as John himself, in the Terminator Series he is a child of God that was sent down to protect the human race from the machines. John Conner is the answer to our problems. Keep on making awesome videos.

Another great breakdown. it further confirms to me that the sequels have no idea what to do with the material set up by James Cameron. I've always thought that T3 and Ang Lee's Hulk (which came out together) should have switched directors and writers. I think Ang Lee would have really understood Cameron's vision and added his own spin to it. But que sera sera.

I live the way Sarah would, fearful of the future, living with anger and hostility towards what/I perceive to be making this world and our future world a war torn and hostile hellscape. I think if I am prepared for life in that vengeful future then it wont be so heartbreaking to whiteness. In stead of holding on to the hopefulness of John and trying to alter that future. I love this video. The single best film analysis video on RU-vid. It's not hyperbole to say, this is truly an inspiration to me. And to have a fellow Irishman put this together is the cherry on top of the icing on top of the t1000... Or something. Well done man

So many of the comments here have already said it far better than I ever could. You did an amazing job, thank you. I absolutely love this video and I can honestly tell you that I will probably watch this video after watching both movies in the future every single time haha.

Well I must say that left me near speechless and bloody well impressed. What started off as a good analysis of an amazing film (in my personal top 3 most loved flicks of all time) gave way to some really deep, philosophical ideas. You make me want to go buy a hat, so I can put it on and tip it in your general direction along with a single, silent nod of the head.
