CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Emma (Debra Winger) is convinced that her husband Flap (Jeff Daniels) is having an affair, but he assures her that she's just being paranoid.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terms of Endearment covers three decades in the lives of widow Aurora Greenway (Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter Emma (Debra Winger). Fiercely protected by Aurora throughout childhood, Emma runs into resistance from her mother when she marries wishy-washy college teacher Flap (Jeff Daniels). Aurora is even more put out at the prospect of being a grandmother, though she grows a lot fonder of her three grandkids than she does of her son-in-law. Flap proves that Aurora's instincts were on target when he enters into an affair with a student (Kate Charleson). Meanwhile, Emma finds romantic consolation with an unhappily married banker (played by John Lithgow, who registers well in a rare "nice guy" performance). As for Aurora, she is ardently pursued by her next-door neighbor, boisterous astronaut Garrett Breedlove (Jack Nicholson). After 75 minutes or so of pursuing an episodic, semi-comic plotline, the film abruptly shifts moods when Emma discovers that she has terminal cancer. Terms of Endearment won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay for TV veteran James L. Brooks making his first feature film, Best Actress for MacLaine, and Best Supporting Actor for Nicholson. It was followed by a sequel, The Evening Star (1996), which again featured MacLaine as Aurora.

Jeff Daniels admitted that when the movie came out he went to a Cinema undercover and women were cursing him out. Don't you notice that in The 1980's there were characters you just "hated". Lynette in An Officer & A Gentleman was a prime example.

I don't think they were cussing him directly, since Daniels was incognito, but he overheard what was being said about him. Or rather, his character.

Flap, was disliked by Emma's, mom ( aurora), so bad . It's no wonder why he moved his family away from Texas and aurora. Granted he was cheating on Emma, and hurting his kids emotionally. He definitely deserves to be heated for that.

deb310red The character Flap was despicable in this film. Not only did he cheat on his beautiful wife, after Emma passed, he didn't show any desire at all to keep his children...Despicable. That said, I like Jeff daniels and think he did a great job with this role early in his career.

I don't hate Flap. He is (obviously) a terrible husband, but Jeff Daniels still manages to bring humanity and empathy to the character, and despite everything, he and Emma do still care deeply about each other at the end, which is kind of life affirming.

I really wanted to think that, but he liked Janice enough that when she moved away, he moved his job and entire family to a new state just so he can work in the university she went to school in. He didn’t know she was dying at this point. Still, cheating on someone is horrible whether they’re dying or not. And if they do it once, statistics say they’ll likely do it again. So even if she had lived, he’d likely have done it again.

I remember reading The Class by the late Erich Segal and there was a Guy like Flap named Ted Lambros. He felt that he had to prove himself since he was the son of Greek Immigrants and since he didn't have the "Dollars" that his Classmates did at Harvard it was quite challenging. He got a Position at Oxford in London, England after teaching Greek Mythology at Harvard but he let his Anatomy rule his life when he had an Affair with a Student. His wife divorced him, stayed in England and when he went to see his Son Teddy he was in shock at how he sounded in terms of his Accent which was now British. He finally learned to stop to smell the roses, and got a second chance with a wonderful woman named Abby but Flap never did.

@@m.e.d.7997 I agree that Debra Winger should have won an Oscar for her performance, but believe the hospital scene with Shirley Mcclaine gave her the edge. Character development was amazing for Emma, but Aurora dealing with her own battles of getting older, accepting the fact she’s going to be a grandmother. While still trying to love her estranged Daughter! It’s a perfect well balanced movie. I think both women should have shared that Oscar
