Franz von Holzhausen has been Tesla's chief designer since 2008. CNBC got a rare interview with him at the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, which recently opened a new Tesla exhibit. He was a lead designer on the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y as well as the Cybertruck, Tesla Semi truck and the second generation Roadster. Prior to Tesla, he worked in design at Mazda, General Motors, and Volkswagen. He speaks to CNBC about what it is like to have Elon Musk as a boss, what happened with the glass shattering windows at the Cybertruck unveil, and what is next for auto design.

@justingolden21
@justingolden21 Год назад
It's hard to not make quality content when you're CNBC in a non political space and here's why: 1) They have enough influence so they can interview anyone, just ask and you'll get an interview with the top guys at Tesla, unlike smaller outlets. 2) They have enough money for good equipment such as cameras, mics, video editors, etc. to put together a high production value video, and 3) They have enough money to do market research and figure out what people actually wanna hear. So your end result is something people want to se that not only gets made, but gets made well. When there's any hint of politics though, all journalistic integrity goes out the window and CNBC becomes about as bad if not worse than CNN or Fox.

@@rlsedition I hope you are right, but I fear you are wrong. Here is why: Tesla can build a car for about half what it costs the OEMs to do it. They also can build them at least 3 times faster than VW who was known up till then as the fastest car builder in the world. Tesla has locked in supply contracts for years with battery suppliers, mines, etc. They do not have nearly the supply chain issues others have and will continue to have into the latter part of this decade….. by then it will all be nearly over. EVs are run on software and Tesla is the front runner on this too. Finally Tesla does not have to deal with unions nor dealers (who mark up the price of the cars making them not as competitive). I think this is Tesla’s game to lose. BYD may give them a run for their money but I think the OEMs, if they survive, will be mere shadows of their former status.

Go sit in an EQS and then get in a Tesla Model S. See which one you'd rather have. I'd take the Mercedes in a heart beat. I do NOT need a car that does 0-Ticket much faster than the EQS or the BMW EVs do. The only thing that Tesla might have is their Supercharger network and they typically do have slightly better charge times. But I think those advantages might go away. Rivian produced 7,363 BEVs in Q3 2022; meanwhile in the same period Tesla produced 365,000 and is ramping up production at its massive new Austin Texas and Berlin factories. Producing "a car" is not hard; making 50,000 a year is. Rivian, Lucid, Fisker, Vinfast, Aptera, Sono, Lightyear, etc. are all learning this the hard way.

2:45 It seems like it is not just form follows function by form follows manufacturing - the casting process and the steel, etc. He gets into that with how the thickness of the steel precludes curves etc. I don't love the form/function argument for utilitarian "honest" buildings (becomes an excuse to be cheap ugly apartments, etc). Doesn't need to be every car is like this, but cool to have this as a variety. Can still pick 6 other standard trucks - just another option!

So many vehicles look the same. I own 3 Teslas and a 911. 911 easily recognized as well as a Tesla. I am a car fanatic and I find myself looking for an emblem to identify the vehicle. I have owned Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Maserati and others. I never realized how much maintenance required gas vehicle until I bought an EV. I bought my 2017 Model X new. It has almost 70,000 miles. Only maintenance have been tires. Never been to service center. Drives like brand new. Battery still great shape.

heh, "...Mazda wasn't really focused on sustainability..." so I went to Tesla, to design a huge behemoth of a bulletproof truck that weighs more than a fully loaded military Humvee... great sustainability. as a cyclist he's really giving back to the bicycle community too, as cybertruck has the "hardest part on the outside" and so is really pedestrian and cyclist friendly. as it's just pulverizes and kills them instantly, so there's no needless suffering and painful recovery time afterwards..

Tesla pushed EVs into the mainstream, basically shaming and waking the big car companies into reacting. even the promise of certain Tesla features have impacted other manufacturers to try and keep up. the impact of Tesla has not been limited to the car industry, and along with SpaceX and the others, along with the giga factories have changed the world.
