Tesla App Review - Stats

Today we're doing a Tesla App Review of Stats. There are a lot of third party Tesla apps to choose from, but many of them just duplicate the official Tesla app’s basic functionality and aren’t worth installing. The only apps that really warrant checking out are those that give you functionality or analysis that you can’t get from Tesla directly.

Great video on a great product Matt, thanks. The Stats app is well worth the cost and the developer not only releases constant updates but also takes user input and makes changes very quickly. Developer also replies to support requests and questions via email almost instantly, something rare in this day and age. I have been using mine for about 6 months now and love the automation (if locks the door for me, or notifies me I left the HVAC on). Can't wait to see what other great stats get added.

Great video, as always, Matt! Hey, just wanted to share my experience with Stats. When I first downloaded the app none of my data was being saved. After contacting the developer he said the app used iCloud storage. I then looked and found that it wasn’t saving due to my iCloud storage being maxed out. I bumped my storage to the next plan up to gain space and then restarted the app and it began saving my data. Anyway, I hope that helps someone else. Thanks again, Matt!

@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 лет назад
Glad you liked it! YES! Tesla owners should be wary of apps that ping your car because it absolutely can drain the battery faster. From all of my testing, TeslaFi, Tezlab, and Stats have all gone above and beyond to make sure that they’re pinging the car responsibly. I’ve actually been talking to the developer of Stats and he’s really thought it through and built it the right way. On the flip side, I’ve tried other apps and integrations into things like Home Assistant (an open source home automation system), and their Tesla component drained my car like nobody’s business.

Love your reviews, was wondering if any of these apps have a scheduling feature that lets your program charging to get to a set point by a certain time. This way the battery will be warm when leaving in a cold weather climate.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 лет назад
Stats just released a Smart Battery Prep feature that does something very, very close. You set your base charge amount, the schedule for when you want to warm up the car/battery, the max charge amount, and then just leave your car plugged in. I’ve been testing this new feature and it’s pretty slick. The app has my base charge set to 85%, and then at 8:00am it wakes the car up, sets the charge to 90%, and starts charging and warming everything up. By the time I get to my car, the battery is all warmed up and ready to go.

Matt...unfortunately, the STATS APP crashed my Model 3 screen over and over again. So much so, that I had to do a reset almost twice a day. Took the car into Tesla, and they said they wiped my system and rebooted it. Took a day, and two 45 minute trips to get my car "fixed." The next day the same problem started popping up all over again. I thought of the STATS App and deleted it....guess what? No more problems. No more glitchy screen...no more having to reboot constantly. The software was creating a loop within the Tesla operating system and crashing. Money wasted.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 лет назад
Sorry to hear about the problems with the Tesla screen, but that's coincidental. There's absolutely no way any third party app can affect the car's onboard computer and screen like that. They all use Tesla's APIs, which are limited in scope and access.

Matt, quick question about location sharing with this app. Is the phone's location ever used to track trips, etc? Right now I have it set to always on but it seems to constantly using my location in the background. What setting should I be using on my phone (never, always on, when using the app)?
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 лет назад
I have mine set to always on because the app logs where you are to map things like phantom drain and usage.
@LessWire1
@LessWire1 5 лет назад
[Stats developer here]: The app does not track your location (Apple forces apps that track locations to put a disclaimer in the app description). The reason for location permission is this: The app checks the status of doors and trunks a few seconds after you arrive somewhere (also periodically about once every 30 minutes). In order for iOS to detect "arrival" evens, the location permission is needed. The same is true for the charge reminder notification feature in the app. Hope this helps.

I agree, the apps work that way but I would rather not have to pull my phone out to switch cars everytime I want to get in. Why not allow my 3 to link via bluetooth to unlock and drive even if my X is the one showing in the app? I know its petty but it is a pain standing in the rain pulling out my phone to launch the app, switch cars to get in. I would rather have a key than that option!

[Stats app developer here]: There is no Bluetooth API for third-party apps. I don't recommend using the keyless driving with your model X without carrying your fob because if you get into an area that the car or your phone cannot connect to the internet (e.g., underground parking) or if Tesla servers shutdown (it's rare, but it has happened a few times before), then you are stuck.

How does Stats calculate battery health?...It looks like I'll have to clear up some iCloud space before this app is viable for me, but I do plan on acquiring it. Battery health and 0-60 measurements are the two features I am most interested in for now. I'm giving out to many test rides/drives and carrying out prerequisite launches to be trying to maximize my efficiency during this early stage of ownership :)

As much as I like the idea behind some of the features of these apps I'm not seeing a strong enough reason to share my Tesla login & password with a 3rd party. I wish they'd offer some sort of 2-factor authentication or something that I can revoke by API w/o having to change my login credentials with Tesla. There are a LOT of things someone can do with your Tesla credentials other than simply monitoring your battery state of charge so I'd recommend erring on the side of safety when it comes to something like this. That's just me.

Stats App Can someone help me please? The Stats App is really frustrating me. I'm adamant about allowing my car to be able to sleep uninterrupted for at least 6 hours. I've been able to accomplish perfectly fine with my Model 3. When I'm wanting my car to sleep, I make sure Sentry Mode, Standby Summon, and Cabin Overheat Protection are disabled. I also make sure not to open my Tesla App to check up on it; although I can safely peek at my Tesla App Iphone widget (a simple left->right swipe) to very my car is asleep without actually waking it. But ever since I downloaded the Stats App, I can't keep my car asleep for more than 30-45 minutes. I've tried logging out/deleting the app out and resetting my password (token) to get a baseline again. After that my car slept soundly for more than 12 hours. I logged back into my Tesla App first.. no problems. My car was able to go back to sleep for hours. But as soon as I installed and log into the Stats App, it would remain awake. I'd log out of the Stats App so that it remains at the login prompt, and my car still won't go to back to sleep for a lengthy amount of time. Any suggestions on having the Stats App but and your car able to sleep for several hours uninterrupted? I emailed the developer, but his reply was not helpful.

I use Teslafi to disable sleep mode in my Teslas. I used to be able to do this in the car but Tesla removed that function. I do this because I don't get ATT cell service at my home. Without it I never get updates and I can't wake my car remotely. Its a drag Tesla won't wake a car over wifi. The biggest problem I have is getting the app to switch tokens from one car to the other. @@UndecidedMF Everyone I have met affiliated with Tesla. Their favorite response is to contact their "head of customer service"; in otherwords, Tweet Elon! Which I have done numerous times! Tesla contacts our cars via Cellular SMS to wake, summon and many other features. Then new firmware is downloaded via wifi. I have no idea why it is done this way. For instance, summon should be more reliable over wifi but it only works over cellular, and only ATT, which does not serve my area. Frustrating, their developers have time to develop fart mode but not to fix simple issues! Sorry for the venting. Really a testament to how wonderful the cars are, for us to put up with the crazy mess Tesla is about so many things.

That’s frustrating. I wonder if it’s the way they architected the system early on and it’s difficult to change, or if there’s a good security reason to handle the way they are. If I were a betting man, I think it’s probably more the first one. Hopefully they change it soon.

Please be more discerning with your use of the phrase “phantom drain”. If you wait in your car for someone who has run into a store, that is not phantom drain. You made the choice to stay in the car and keep the car awake. Improper use of the phrase “phantom drain” dilutes its meaning and leads to misunderstood comments.

I run Stats but am not a fan of how the developer calculates / makes assumptions for some of the data. I argued with him on reddit about it and he confirmed my assumptions about the calculations for "savings" and wow, it's really a bit whacky. Take a look at some of the numbers in there and see if it makes sense to you. It does make some sort of sense mathematically but not in terms of real world at all, he's using some pretty odd methods there, which to me puts a good amount of the other data into question. Does he make other nonsensical assumptions determining some of the other stats? I'm using Stats and Tezlab right now but mostly Tezlab. It gives me all the information that I'm mostly looking for. I don't care as much about the deep dive at this point, maybe I will later.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 лет назад
What calculations specifically?
@studiogerk
@studiogerk 5 лет назад
@@UndecidedMF It is currently calculating the savings using a method that completely ignores the actual distance driven. Take a look at the $$ associated to the savings bar in your app. Maybe I'm the only one that feels this is really off, but it shows me values there that are multiple times more than it would have cost me in fuel driving a similar ICE car in the real world...
@LessWire1
@LessWire1 5 лет назад
@@studiogerkThe saving is the difference between the cost of adding 'x' estimated range to the Tesla and the cost of adding the same number of miles to a ICE car (whose MPG the user specifies). The estimated range is computed by Tesla and takes into account driving efficiency, temperature, etc. This is similar to MPG for a gas car which is used to compute the estimated range for the ICE car.
@studiogerk
@studiogerk 5 лет назад
@@LessWire1 So riddle me this. On a very cold day when I drive 80km in my Model S how do I "save" over $20 over driving an ICE vehicle for the same distance? Hint: it would only cost me $6 or so for the actual total gasoline cost to drive 80km. Please don't re-explain the premise behind the calculations, explain exactly how one can "save" $20 when the exact same drive an ICE vehicle would have only cost $6 in total. I don't want to discuss what potential estimated ranges were added to a vehicle vs the total same number of miles to an ICE car, most especially when you have the exact distance driven available to make said calculation. Why would anyone even care or want to consider this? If you're talking about savings I want to know about the cold, hard cash saved. Not a theoretical situation. It's the same old argument all over again. It seems like I'm the only one that sees folly in this whole premise so I'll just give up now.
