Gigafactory Texas on 17 January 2022! This is where the Cyber Truck and Model Y will be built!
It was a busy start to the week despite the US holiday today. It was a gorgeous morning to fly and take images, starting out with a vivid orange sunrise and the moon setting over downtown Austin! Plenty of interesting deliveries and activities around the site as well.
In the video introduction, we look at recent news about a major supplier to Giga Texas, specifically the stainless steel for the Cybertruck manufacturing. Steel Dynamics is nearly complete with their new $1.9B manufacturing plant in Sinton, Texas and they are the supplier of Stainless Steel chosen by Tesla for production of the Cybertruck.
This new facility is about 167 miles (about 270 Km) south of Austin. The General Manager of this new facility says it will be operational by the end of this month, or early February. Although not specifically Giga Texas, this is a major part of the Cybertruck production, and is yet another key indicator of the progress to production at Giga Texas.

Here are some highlights from around the site this morning:
- Gorgeous sunrise, so we do a north to south quick flight along the west side of the main factory and look at the foundation on the west side.
- More earthmoving work on the east side of the south end, preparing to further widen the large gravel parking area just north of the big pond. This work has now reached all the way to the large power lines.
- We see more equipment being moved into and out from the south General Assembly structure using the temporary loading platform. We also get a quick look inside the stamping extension open doorways to see some ground slab work underway.
- At the stamping machine structure, we see crews breaking down empty crates for AIDA stamping machine parts, further suggesting continued assembly of this huge press is ongoing inside. Also, we see more roofing materials arranged on the south end, likely to finish off the roof to wall interface over the stamping extension structure.
- Back up on the northwest corner, we see the temporary filtration system in operation this morning, with a long pipe reaching over the berm and into a water culvert, obviously draining away some of the water from the system. On the roof, we see some of the HVAC ducting covers have been damaged, most likely from the extremely windy day on Saturday (wind gusts more than 50 MPH or about 90KPH).
- Arriving on the north end and then being marshalled over to the northeast new trailer area were five large trucks bringing huge bridge crane rails for the casting machine structure. These will hold up a heavy lift bridge crane possibly related to the larger 8,000-ton Giga Presses.
- On the east side, we see plenty of activity relocating trailers from the east parking to the far east and north trailer areas, as well as some new trailers arriving on site as well. We see the storm water pipe excavation and installation work moving farther north in the center of the large parking area, and on the south end, preparation with rebar to cover over the underground pipe with concrete.
- Finally, we look at progress on the roof area over the regenerative Thermal Oxidizer system near the paint shop and more of the large vents over the north Body in White structure.
