Note: since our original review, Tesla has seemingly removed or replaced one of its front speakers - the entry-level model used to have 8 speakers, with the LR/P featuring 15; now down to 7 and 14, respectively. We suspect the 1″ 25W tweeter, which used to be located within the dashboard has now been taken out of the equation or combined with one of the 4″ 33W mid-range drivers.

The Tesla long range audio system is one of the best I’ve ever heard in a car. I gave is a good workout during my 24hr test drive with all kinds of music. The acoustic glass and lack of engine noise makes a huge difference in audio quality. I ordered a Model 3 after the test drive.

I have owned both the Model 3 SR+ and LR and I found the differences in audio quality, while definitely there, to be quantitative. The sound is "bigger" in the LR but the overall quality of sound reproduction is not all that much different, if at all. I listen mostly to FLAC files and WAV files ripped from CD's. I agree with the Paul Evans comment. The interface needs an upgrade.
@TotallyEV
@TotallyEV 2 года назад
Indeed, the reproduction (ie imaging) in both vehicles is very accurate, but the overall 'extra' width and depth due to the extra drivers (and subwoofer), certain bolsters the experience :)

@tralexan
@tralexan 2 года назад
@@fillherbut1880 As stated, I use uncompressed formats, both FLAC and WAV. However, if you wish to use them, MP3's will work. It's just that the files are compressed and the sound suffers for it. I have a hub installed in the center console that accepts both USB-A and USB-C flash drives. The "factory" USB for Dashcam and Sentry recordings remains in the Glovebox.

Good review.I currently drive a 2012 VW Jetta with the Fender (Panasonic) stereo system. It is the best audio I have heard in an ICE vehicle. Much better (IMO) than my son's Bose in his 2022 Maxda CR-9. I'm especially looking forward to the lower ambient noise in an EV. As any audiophile knows the silent background is essential to clean audio.

Thanks for this review, very useful. I currently have a BMW i3 with the HK premium sound system, it is OK, but does not amaze me. I find the upper midrange quite ‘hard’, noticeable on female vocalists, and the overall sound is hard/harsh particularly when pushed, despite the twin subs in the front foot wells, the bass is not very tight or controlled and is a bit weak. Have you tried the i3 sound system? Do you think the M3 SR+ might be better, even without the subwoofer? One last thought, I assume the Tesla supports DAB reception, though it doesn’t get mentioned in reviews, is this correct?
@TotallyEV

Pleasure, glad you liked it and found it useful! Unfortunately not heard the i3 HK system at length and haven't reviewed it; so can't give you a comparison - sorry! 2:07 - can you please clarify about youtube subscription plan? Do I have the option to listen from RU-vid music as Spotify? I had a Google music a long time with a lot of uploaded tracks and playlist. Then google convert it to YT Music with all data I had. I still have the subscription so at my Android Auto/Car Play connection I have the option to listen my tracks. Is it possible at Tesla as well?
@TotallyEV
@TotallyEV 2 года назад
As in; can you listen to your playlists, while using your phone via RU-vid Music? You can over Bluetooth, yes; but Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both not supported. You can use the built-in RU-vid app or Spotify app, but after 30 days on the RWD model or 1-year on the AWD models, you'll have to pay for the premium service, which grants access to Spotify for example - more info on Tesla's site: www.tesla.com/en_GB/support/connectivity "Premium Connectivity is required for in-car streaming music & media over cellular. A paid subscription to streaming services is required to access music and media streaming for both Standard and Premium Connectivity." Hope that helps? :)

The SR audio will only feel notable if you happen to come from the A8/S-class/7 series rank of cars in my experience. And even then, it required a “careful listening session” to clearly point out which parts were lacking. It’s plenty good enough for on road use and I don’t have any complains against it in my SR+ model 3. Sure my Audi’s Bang and Olufsen system is better but the audio package costs a solid couple grand on top of the base car. The Model 3 comes with it default or with a drive train upgrade.

My Kia niro EV came with “premium sound” which did sound great and even heard an ev6 and it was about as good. But the base model Tesla I test drove and the one I bought (base model) were a noticeable upgrade. The sound is still impressive in the base model. @@TotallyEV current Kias seem to have two levels of sound, the “base” system which I think is 6 speakers and leaves something to be desired, and an upgrade with 13 (?) speakers including a subwoofer, which is quite good. Their upgrade audio is typically only included in the highest trim levels, and the difference between the two is akin to the difference between AM and FM radio. My current ride has a stock upgraded audio (Infinity, not Bose, it’s a 2015 Soul) which is _nearly_ as good as the current Kia upgraded audio; what I’d genuinely like to know is if the “lesser” audio of the M3 SR is as good as (or better than) that, it has three speakers in the dash, one in each of the 4 doors, and a small sub in the rear cargo area; from what I’m reading it might be. I have heard the audio in the MY LR and like it a lot, definitely better than what I have now.
