We have a 2022 Model 3 RWD LFP, and travel from Bridgewater, NS to Prince Edward County, ON often. The trick is to switch your range view from KM to percentage. Definitely follow the charging recommendations at each supercharger your stop at. We always find it's much easier to charge more often, for a shorter period of time. On our Ontario trips, we usually stop every couple hours, charge for 15-20 minutes, and often only charging up to 70% or 80%. We find it super-quick, usually just enough time for a bio-break, walk the dog, and grab a coffee.

I can not stand it in KM's. I am like you in percentage mode all the time. Great tips here for anyone else reading! Thanks for commenting and watching!

Gas cars also have lower mileage in the winter. It's physics. Around a 15 per cent loss.

If the range loss on those extreme cold days isn't enough then I just take my gas car. Having both options is a sweet setup in my opinion. Those extreme winter days might only be about a month or month and a half total in the winter, half the time it's cold but not the extreme cold we had recently. I guess that depends on where you live in Canada, if your in Sask, Alberta, Winnipeg then they might get more of those extreme cold days.
@teslasincanada
@teslasincanada 5 месяцев назад
We seem to have had a pretty mild winter this year so far in Southern Ontario. Yes range definitely would be much more affected for a longer period of time in Sask, Alberta and Winterpeg. As well as out East. Thanks for watching!

Ice cars also use more gas during very cold weather but nobody make a big fuss about it. We do lose around 20-30% of range during very cold weather, but you plan your moves accordingly. There are so many advantages to an EV that it out balances the down sides.

I have Model Y RWD and charge at home with level 2 charger. During the warmer months I was averaging 141w/km and would charge to 100% every other day to get to work which is a 135km round trip and I would have about 30% left by the time I would recharge. Now during the extreme cold weather I am averaging 195 w/km with standby losses of around 7% while parked in the cold at work and about 3-4% preconditioning before leaving for home. I don't worry too much about the cold, I know I am using more energy during cold weather driving, parking and preconditioning, so I changed my charging habits from charging every other day during the warm weather, to charging every day to 80% and when I get home I arrive with around 30%, a nice buffer in case I need to go anywhere else before heading home. I live in the Burlington area and work in Scarborough, so I do a fair bit of daily driving, so far I love my model Y and am saving a ton of cash compared to using my Ram Long Horn 1500, that was costing me around $175/week in gas.
@teslasincanada
@teslasincanada 5 месяцев назад
Great savings you're getting! I will mention that since the RWD has the LFP battery Tesla recommends you at least charge it to 100% once per week. Just incase you're not doing that anymore(the impression I got from your post). Anyways thanks for watching and I am sure I will see you somewhere in passing in the GTA at some point!

Any advice or experiences that can shared when it comes to getting at home charging installed? Have EV owners had to get a new electrical panel or significant upgrade in order to install the lvl2 charger? Once temps warm up I will bring in an electrician to take a look and provide recommendation. Looking to purchase a Model Y RW towards the end of the calendar year.
@teslasincanada
@teslasincanada 2 месяца назад
Well the RWD Tesla’s charge at a max of 32amps so you can typically get away with fitting them in most existing electrical panels depending on the current loads on the panel already. I have a 200amp panel so I am definitely good but you should be safe on a 100amp panel in most cases.

Great video! I have to drive around 180 km round trip per day from Montreal to Toronto. Would you say a Tesla MY RWD would be able to handle that kind of trip on a single charge during the winter months? For context, it would be charged each night on a lvl 2 charger inside my garage

Finally someone who is giving facts & good advise , I am my 2nd EV in Canada ( Kona EV 1st & now Tesla Y AWD long ranges ) I did on line research before I bought and new in advance that EV’s loose 25-30% range on -20c and colder , it was no secret ,& both Hyundai & Tesla staff advises of this ( no one tried to hide that fact) as they both advised that if you can’t charged at home ( as I can) you might find and EV inconvenient , again they did not try to Hide this fact. So good to hear someone telling the straight up facts that you can use and EV in cold climates if you plan ahead

Is the gas savings value that Tesla puts are they accurate enough? If the EPA range is ratings are over rated as some say isn’t the gas savings too? Also ICE car maintenance va EV maintenance is the cost savings of enough? I though model 3 for local driving city driving would be good enough I do like the range possibility on model 3 long range hyland…
@teslasincanada
@teslasincanada 4 месяца назад
I find that the gas savings estimate is a bit off at least for the vehicle I switched from which maybe was less fuel efficient. I save more than the estimated savings. Maintenance cost is $0 so far over 34,000kms on two teslas that I own

This is definitely true! I tend to keep it around 20-22C on the very cold days and when it is 0- -5C out I keep it around 19C in the car. So range is very minimally impacted in the mild weather for me.

Update - I picked up this new Model Y on December 15th 2023 and used it for work travel since then my total kilometres driven so far with Mon - fri work travel is 6400 kms that is in Alberta cold temps as well. My driving habits are a little different compared to when I drove my ICE vehicle for work travel. My Model Y a RWD standard range with new michelin x ice tires installed. As mentioned in this video pre condition is a must in cold temps plus my Tesla is stored in heated shop over night. Because I travel around a lot for work during the day the car is normally not parked for more than 2.5 / 3 hrs at any one time.
