Let's talk about the life of a Tesla over 100k miles & What happens to a Tesla beyond the 100,000 mile threshold. There's a lot that can go wrong with suspension because these are such heavy cars. Like control arms, mainly upper and in severe cases, lower. There are so many electronics that is something goes, its a toss up on what the price could be. You better pray nothing happens. I hope I can bring you all a review on the newest Teslas! Please like, comment and Sub if you enjoyed and if you didn't, let me know how we can improve this. Peace!
Lets take it to 1,000,000 next time

My reason to get a Tesla,: better crash protection, better charging infrastructure, FSD highway, video recording, no more of having to use a couple of apps to find a charger, dog mode, Joe mode,....

why not just buy a ice car if you want an amazing "charging infrastructure" there are many cars that pass the tesla in safety as well, and at a lower price.

You actually have a lot of control over battery degradation, and you can manage it, it all depends on your charging habits. I've seen Teslas over 100k miles with around 2% battery degradation. Also, MOST degradation happens in the first 20,000-40,000 miles. After that it kinda levels out, and it degrades MUCH more slowly. Also, the 2021 Model 3 (and the Y) have different windows, with MUCH better outside noise reduction. My 2021 Model 3 doesn't have any issues inside or outside. Only 1k miles so far though. My car stays in a garage, plugged in (can only use 120V where I am right now, but I don't drive that much so that's fine for my needs), whenever it's not being used. I expect to have low battery degradation. I also keep the car clean inside and out, and I've had 0 paint problems so far.

Finally! Cost of ownership/maintenance video on an EV! I figured it would be lower than a gas vehicle, but thanks for putting numbers to things!
@kennordsfan1494
@kennordsfan1494 2 года назад
For maintenance i dont think it as big as Tesla fanboys say it is. Look at a new car it is just oil changes really that no different than which Teslas do chew thru tires way faster due to their weight. There will be a time sooner than later that EV’s as a whole will have to contribute to the replacement for gas taxes. I do believe Oregon is looking into a mileage tax as a replacement for the lost revenue of gas taxes. Texas has a 500 a tag renewal fee now and is looking at a mileage tax as well. Which isnt meant to be a penalty just provide the funds for the roads EV’ drive on.

2013 Model S - about to hit 100k miles and these are the issues i've had so far. Battery degradation is on par with what has been said here...but i don't know what the original estimated miles per full charge was so i can't say exactly. I now get 241 miles per full charge(but that hasn't really dropped in the past 15k miles). I had the heating go out right after i bought the car used at 84k miles. I fixed that myself(8 hours and about $230 on ebay for the PTC heater and fuse for the DC/DC Converter). Estimated price for Tesla to do it is $3500+. $2k of that is because Tesla swaps the converter instead of replacing a fuse. Around 94k miles the drive motor dropped a gear and was replaced with 4 months left on the factory warranty. I had them replace the axles at that time as well so that i wouldn't have to deal with that later if there was an issues. The axles cost me just over $1k to have Tesla do it. I could have done it myself for less than half that, but don't have the time or desire. Winter driving(wet or snowy conditions) the car has random glitches where the traction control, abs and regen braking all turn off at once and it basically turns into a drift car. The only way to resolve it is to walk away from the car for 5-10 minutes so it shuts down and wakes back up...though that doesn't always fix it. It's a real pain when you need to get somewhere and you have to choose being late over being safe. Snow driving a Tesla without traction control is no joke. One of the exterior door handles quit releasing the door. Typical wire flexed and corroded until it broke. Fixed that myself for no cost. Thought about buying the custom upgraded wiring harness for it but didn't feel like spending the money. Sunroof seal probably needs to be replaced. Going through the car wash the air dryers blast water though into the headliner. Last issue of note is that randomly when driving in the rain I'll get a suspension needs service message. Once i was driving to work, that message popped up, and when i got there the back suspension was bottomed out while the front was normal. Walk away from the car and come back 15 minutes later and it was back to normal. Problem with any of the intermittent issues is that Tesla will start replacing stuff at their inflated prices and you won't know if it's still broken until the next time it happens. Last issues are common things like screen glitching out and needing the memory upgrade recall(not completed yet), normal interior and exterior wear.

My 2013 Model S has 104,000 and my battery is down to 88% capacity - less than the estimate given in this article. You'd think it was because I use the Supercharger system all the time or charge to 100%, but I don't. I charge at home using 110V about 98% of the time and only charge to 80% (per recommendations by Elon). I also have "gremlins": problems that come and go infrequently. Sometimes the charging door will not open when I request it to (about 10% of the time) AND the same thing with the driver's side door handle. The solution has been to just keep trying until they finally open. Weird. And the software update recently cut out the ability to use my older style flip phone in hands free mode through the car. Really frustrating - the suggestion from the Tesla service center tech: upgrade your phone! Hey, I like my old flip, I don't want a "smart" phone.

Degradation has a lot of variables with age and temperature beeing the worst. If the car stays in the garage and you don't torture the battery with high currents in the first 1k km/miles they last pretty damn long. If you test the 0-100 in 2 sec at every cross road they wont ever do 100k km. Not to different from how you get large milage from a combustion car, just without driving them warm.

I am looking forward to a million mile car that requires much less maintenance than I'm used to. My current Toyota Highlander is at 200K and it's 13 years old. It has been well taken care of and still has a lot of life in it, but the maintenance....geez! $80 high milage full synthetic oil change about every 6 months. 2 tune ups in 200K, 2 suspension replacements in 200K, brakes every year at $100 (I don't buy the cheap ones), tires every 2 years (I live in the country on rough roads). Unfortunately all that technology will at some point need replacement. I.E. Cameras won't last forever and chips and Motors that make the wheels spin are not indefinite. On tires, interesting thing: I still have my original tires (20” Michelin Pilot PS4s) on my Performance Model 3 over 44,400 miles. The kicker is that they don’t even look like they’ll be done any time soon. I drive conservatively, for the most part. I owned used 2016 Model X, with slightly less than 40k miles, bought from Tesla. I had it for an entire year of 2020 and added around 15k miles. In one year I was in service for about 6 times. I went twice for yellow ring around main screen, which is a common issue with older models. Sadly, Tesla does not offer replacement, instead they offer some kind of UV light treatment, so issue comes up again after a while. I had upper control arm joint replaced, it was making a horrible noise while driving. Tesla had to replace burned fuse at interior heating unit, interior heater stopped working in March, when it was cold. Some wires got ripped or something in a steering wheel column, so I had no airbag for a while, when Tesla repaired it, they forgot to connect steering wheel heater, happened in December, also not very nice, when you have to wait again for service with no heating steering wheel. Rubber door seal was replaced, it was extremely worn after just 30k miles by previous owner. One wiper blade broke due to ice accumulation. Numerous software glitches (MCU1) due to software download issue. Few times I felt that forward collision avoidance never actually worked, not like in other cars where they would stop vehicles abruptly way sooner than drivers reaction. Do not buy used tesla without warranty it will drain your wallet. I had warranty and free roadside assistance, but going for service was so annoying. I had Japanese cars before, that I have never took for service while owning them for 3 years.

Have there been any issues with caliper seize-up? Almost all ICE cars will have caliper pistons slowly corrode over the years and seize-up, causing "dragging" and rotor overheat. This is particularly noticeable on the rear discs since they tend to get less use and full-stroke activation. Make/model seems to make no difference, it can be Toyota, Honda, Lexus, it's just a matter of time. Climate may make a big difference, particularly in areas where road salt is used, but I suspect it happens everywhere, just slower!

I think the calendar life of the battery might be more critical from my experience. I got my Model 3 in 2018, which I guess when you did as well. It only has 55K miles until now, but the battery capacity is 285miles over its original one 310miles, corresponding to an 8% degradation. BTW, I don't regard myself as an aggressive battery user. Because, I usually use supercharger 1-2 times per week, and mostly use level 2 charger whose voltage is 240V and current is 32-48A. More importantly, most of the time I retain the state of charge between 20 to 80%. This could be a special case. Just wondering if anyone has the same experience.
@UTArch1
@UTArch1 2 года назад

Range Charges for the start of every trip and several times on the trip, and about every 3 mos. Immediately driving it down to 90% before letting it sit. Ran to under 10% safely on way to work many times. I learned only this last winter that to mix up my charging a bit to 70% 80% and then 90% for a weekend off has seemed to be the best to keep the battery range calibrated, oh 75% of charging done at work on level 2. Sub Zero temps in winter especially at night, I work the PM shift. I will only buy Tesla from now on. Waiting on my Cybertruck. Res# is at around 55,000 so fairly early, will depend on what variant they start delivering.
