Test Your Speaker Wires and Fix Your Crappy Sounding Ford Foxbody Mustang 

This is great info. Thank you. The premium system was decent for the era...not the best or worst of factory systems available then. At this point, the speakers have been in a car environment for 30-35 years, and certainly have at least some degree of age. The Ford/JBL system I had in two Mark VII's was excellent and still holds up well now. The rare system with the equalizer was, at least electronically, better than the common head unit. The reason why, and not just because it has another feature, is the regular Premium Sound that came in the Mustangs up 'til '92 had a small built in amplifier feeding a speaker level output into the separate amplifier. The equalizer version, like all better head units (including what Ford was putting in Lincolns when they updated the head unit part way into 1988) is preamp only, so what comes out from the system with the equalizer is preamp level and goes into a different amplifier - even though it looks the same - that has more gain because it's receiving a preamp output and I believe was 100 watts total instead of 80, although Ford did not publicize this. The speakers are the same, but with the equalizer, you can tune the system better to the car's acoustics or however you like. Of course, the system with the equalizer can be used for the same purpose with better speakers and amplification to properly drive them. As with so many older cars, if you can bypass the internal amps, or at the least feed the speaker level outputs into a proper separate amplifier of good quality and put in good speakers, it will sound fine. I had the Quadrasonic 8 track unit in my '77 Mark V modified so I also have preamp level outputs, and fed into a much better amp and speakers, it sounds far better than most people would imagine. Now that older head units can be modified to accept modern sources, I at least mention all this because some may have removed the original unit because of possibly sound quality, needing different sources, etc, but may like their dash to look correct. If so, they can definitely get far better sound than how it was originally. Think of it as stealth performance mods for audio.

Hi Raymond, Can you make a vid on how to connect the Foxlox on the convertible which requires passenger connection and repining the foxlox connector white and grey wires for it to work.

Ford diagram says my '89 'Vert is: Orange/Light Green Purple/White Pink/Lt Green Purple/White White/Lt Green Purple/White Pink/Lt Blue Purple/White But mine is: Orange/Light Green Green/Orange Pink/Lt Green Pink/Lt Blue White/Lt Green Blue/White Pink/Lt Blue Green/Orange And I know 1 and 6 are swapped for sure, but ALL the returns are wrong. Too much fun.

Just tried to install an aftermarket alpine head unit in 91 fox body gt convertible i just bought for my daughter and it turns out the speaker hatness only has 5 wires so im guessing they have ground negative. Shouldnt i just bypass harness and run new wires from speakers to back of stereo???
