Hello Kenny, thank you so much for making these videos. I have to say that this is my second pool I have owned and when I had a salt pool my readings were always up and down but with my current pool I made sure not to go with salt and maintaining my pool is so much easier. This AZ heat is really burning 🔥 the pucks really fast but what can you do when you have 19+ days over 110°. I love how clear my pool looks and maintenance is so easy.

Glad to hear it. There's always a trade of of something when choosing how your'e going to sanitize your pool. But, in my opinion, until the salt technology gets MUCH better I think you made a good choice.

Another great video, thanks Kenny. I hate the summer time because I go through so much more chlorine... it just burns off too fast here in San Diego. Gotta stay on top of it and dump 64oz twice a week to keep up--does that seem excessive for a 17k gal pool? BTW, I finally broke down and ordered the Sunday Afternoons adventure hat, cream, just like the one you always wear. I got tired of getting those straw beach hats that don't last more than a summer. I figure if it's good for you it's good enough for me!
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
Honestly I don't use liquid chlorine so I don't think I can comment on that part. I use tablets exclusively. But make sure your CYA levels are in the ideal ranges (30-180ppm). Hope you like your hat as much as I like mine. BTW my wife and I love visiting San Diego (especially the beaches around there) as often as we can (and it's a lot).
@petergeiter5463
@petergeiter5463 Год назад
That amount seems reasonable to me. I'm in AZ and it's been over 110 for the last 3 weeks. I'm currently putting 24oz of 12.5% a day into a 10K pool to maintain. My CYA is 45.
@chris
@chris Год назад
@@PoolSchooler CYA is good. I've got test strips (same ones you use) and the Taylor test kit. I think the money pit is just living up to its name. It arrives Friday and I'm excited... I spend a lot of time outside doing yard work and of course, pool maintenance! I love San Diego... so much to do all the time, especially all the great beaches! Thanks again for the great videos... keep 'em coming--I watch them all!

@@PoolSchooleralso I wanted to know, how much acid do you use for a regular residential when the ph is high I have a hard time with that.
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
@@mikedaflame8483 I have a policy when it comes to adding acid to a pool and if it’s liquid muriatic acid I add one cord at a time unless it’s so high then I will add no more than 2 quarts at a time. However, sometimes if you’re having a constant problem with high pH, I would check the pH of the source water that’s feeding into the pool. Sometimes the pH of that water is extremely high and as it evaporates and you’re adding freshwater, you’re going to constantly battle high pH.

Hey Kenny, I have a salt pool which I know you hate. When I maintained the pool myself with the help of Pinch A Penny, a local pool shop, they always had me putting stabilizer in it. Yet when I went to a pool service I never saw the tech put any stabilizer in it, if anything he would put a tablet in the skimmer that was chlorine with stabilizer. Was the pool shop steering me wrong?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler 11 месяцев назад
Stabilizer is CYA (Cyanuric Acid). Most pool supply stores cause pool owners to overdose their CYA and then you have to change your water too often. I'd suggest watching my video on Cyanuric Acid; What You Need to Know About it. It should be very helpful in understanding about it. Here's a link. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_z55SBsjadw.html

Hey Kenny maybe you can help, I am currently having issues with a 69k commercial pool that continues to get cloudy. I have added clarifier , shock, algaecide even flocculant , hoping to see results, and nothing, I’ve even backwashed the sand to see if that helped. Do you have any suggestions?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
Wow, I’ve not done a lot of commercial pools in my life but I’ve done a few. So take what I’m going to offer with a grain of salt. First, there’s a possibility that the sand in the sand filter is old and ineffective now so depending on how old the sand is, you might wanna consider replacing it and if you do, I might suggest Dr. Drydens activate glass filter media substitute. it’s way more efficient and better than sand. Secondly, clarifier is cyanuric acid be careful that you don’t overdose the pool with it or it will not hold chlorine and it will get cloudy because of that so you want to test your CYA levels to make sure that they’re not so high that it’s causing it to burn through chlorine. Third, and this is only if that cloudiness is green, cloudiness associated with algae in the pool is turning green. There’s a possibility that your phosphates are too high since algae feeds primarily on phosphates. But based on my suggestions and what you said, in your comment my best guess would be to consider that the suspect is old sand and you might need to replace the sand in the filter That’s all I can think of. I hope some of it helps.

Would you only run aerator at night to minimize chlorine loss, can you run during the day or is it just to hot in az now to be worth it?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
Again, running it through the day in the heat of summer is counterproductive since you’re blowing the water into extremely hot air. It may have a slight effect, but not worth it. So I would run it at night if you’re trying to cool the water.
@dawnchrislotti8565
@dawnchrislotti8565 Год назад
ya thanks Kenny, great videos, Question, how much does an aerator affect chlorine, and is it too hot in Az to be effective? thanks
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
It’s a catch 22 the hotter the pool gets the faster the water evaporates so you’re gonna go through chlorine that way or if you run the aerator you’re gonna get more evaporation that way, but you’re gonna keep the temperature of the pool down a little bit so in my opinion, it’s a bit of a wash, I’m sure somebody’s going to pipe in and say that’s not true but the question really is do you want the pool a little cooler or do you want it to be like a bathtub.
@dawnchrislotti8565
@dawnchrislotti8565 Год назад
Ty sir, is it to hot right now to even bother running the aerator?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
@@dawnchrislotti8565 You absolutely should run the aerator now MORE than other times. BUT run your pump at night when the air temp is a bit lower. I always run my client's aerators from late May through September to keep the water temps down and it does make a difference. hello I have a 16 by 8 ft above ground pool it keeps saying no chlorine but I put 3 3 in tablets in just started the pool up new I put the start up kit in it but still says chlorine is not there
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler 2 месяца назад
If your test kit is not inaccurate, then I would trust what your test kit says. If it’s low, it’s low. Typically when you start up a pool with freshwater to be a little more aggressive with how much chlorine you put in to get it going. I would suggest get some liquid chlorine, maybe 1 gallon and poured in the pool. Wait a couple hours with the pump running and test your chemistry again, and you probably should be good to go

i keep getting yellow algae in my pool even though my water is balanced. should i treat my pool with sodium bromide (yellow treat) or should i buy a phosphate test and phosphate remover or both.
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
I’d start out with checking the phosphate levels and getting a good phosphate remover like PR 10,000 and get those down first. Also make sure your filter media is clean. Then if all that doesn’t help may try the yellow out.

Kenny would you advise against running aerator this time of year due to Chlorine loss and not cooling pool with ambient temps?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
I'm getting this question a lot (Maybe I should do a quick 'short' to send to all my subscribers. 😉 But it really is a trade off. When it's this hot (at least in AZ and places like it) you get a lot of evaporation due to the air temp/total surface area of your pool/and pool water temp (the bigger/higher each is the more rapid the evaporation). THEN you have to consider the aerator which uses evaporation (during the cooler hours of the night) to cool the water temp which can reduce evaporation rates a bit. So it's really a trade off. In my opinion when we get as hot as we are in AZ right now (118-119) without an aerator the pool temps can get as high as 94-96° which is just not refreshing so I think it's worth it to run the aerator during the hotter summer months to keep your pool from becoming a bath tub.
@dawnchrislotti8565
@dawnchrislotti8565 Год назад
At night only?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
@@dawnchrislotti8565 well, since the air temperatures are coolest late night through early early mornings before the sun comes up typically that’s the best time to run the aerator if you want to try and cool the water. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to run your aerator in the heat of the day when it’s the hottest. Although if you just want to run it during the day for aesthetics or even if you’re laying out on a raft and want to go underneath it to cool you off that’s totally cool too.

What range do you like for cya?
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler Год назад
30-50ppm to begin with (fresh water start up) and then I don't really consider changing the water til the level gets between 200 and 300ppm AND then only if I find that the pool doesn't hold chlorine well anymore.
