Backwash Valve Maintenance

@@PoolSchooler That's a deal> I will send you an email with my info. I am close, in Lemon Grove. I tried to unscrew the valve with the lock and open dial, but it is stuck and leaking water when the filter is turned on. I can not turn the dial either, when it's off or on.

It’s always very tough when the piston valve gets stuck as you’re describing. You can try twisting it a little bit and gently, ever so gently trying to work it out or you might want to take some silicon lubricant like WD-40, and spray it inside the sleeve of the piston and see if it can penetrate the O-rings and loosened it up.

@@PoolSchooler Next time I service the filter I will disconnect the unions and slide the canister back. Hopefully, I will be able to see if anything is jammed in the spool. I have never found that even the three-cycle back wash to be effective so I just pull the grids. Take care.

That’s similar to the Hayward very flow valve. It has multi positions I’m assuming you have an Above Ground Pool. Typically something like that you can spray some heavy duty silica lubricant into the main center pin, and that will keep it lubricated

I haven’t yet. I actually only have one client who has a spider valve or Hayward star valve or similar. Those O-rings are a little trickier. One of the cheap hacks that I use to keep those lubricated because they’re a little more involved to take apart is to Spray heavy duty silicon lubricant into the handle of the valve and that tends to work pretty well for me. I should probably do one.

Yes they do. I have found with the Pentair in my own quiet, who have them with proper means like lubricating O-rings regularly they don’t. Sometimes you have to twist the valve piston, one or the other and it’s locked state for filtering to get a better seal. Other than that I don’t think there’s any way around it. I have found that with new O-rings. The seal is good and it doesn’t leak at least in my clients pools it doesn’t.

It's a Hayward DE filter. If you're looking for backwash valve maintenance on a sand filter w/a piston style b/w valve it's the exact same as this video. DE or Sand it's the same. Can you be more specific as to what you are wanting a video on?

@@thejoyfuljoy it’s exactly the same whether it’s a sand filter or a DE filter when it comes to the backwash valve.

I have scaled back on my routes to where I’m doing only two days of Pool Service. At one point I was doing close to 70 pools a week.
