Water/methanol injection has been used successfully since World War II as a way to enhance power by increasing octane. HorsePower conducts a pair of first-ever tests - one for naturally-aspirated engines, another for turbo engines. The results may astonish you.

If you are referring to water meth injection it was used in the oldsmobile turbo jet fire back in early 60s. They called it turbo rocket fluid or something

Oldsmobile in the early 60's used a turbocharged 215 CI aluminum engine that had alcohol/water injection to prevent pre-ignition. They called it Rocket fuel, I believe. It was not very successful, and the Corvair Spyder Turbo outperformed it and lived a lot longer. Chevrolet used ignition timing and a smaller carb to limit boost.

Automotive turbocharging was in its infancy. The turbo Pontiac 301 with a Rochester carb was better after 20 or so years research. The American engine that really got turbos on factory autos was the Buick Regal and Grand Nationals with electronic controls. Tamed the beast (fuel metering) for street and once tuners figured out how to hack the modules it was a hot rodders dream.

@@mikeskidmore6754Comparing your modified Camaro to a stock Regal of Grand National is not a fair comparison. You also do not explain just what modifications you performed. Would have been nice to see a baseline run on the 93 without the methanol so that you get a good accurate idea of how much horsepower gain you get with the methanol instead of doing a baseline on the race gas or do both tests do the water methanol with the race gas and then do the water methanol with the 98 so you can see horsepower gains on both fuels

@cleveland2286
@cleveland2286 Год назад
@@samuelriester1419 Yeah I think you are right. I don't think a lot of people understand the way you get more power with water/meth injection is that it allows you to run higher compression and advance timing (static and dynamic, but usually dynamic for the spoolie boys) because the limiting factor of higher power potential fuels for NA motors will always be the inability to shove enough air into the cylinders. So quite literally, the only thing water/meth could accomplish would be decreasing combustion gas temps allowing for higher compression or more timing advance. Hence why, a motor not tuned for it (NA ones especially) will reap little to no benefit from water/meth injection. (they sprinkled this information in the video I thought I should condense it) NA ones especially because pretty much the only thing they can change without huge mods would be timing. Chances are by running 93, they'd have to cut timing so much it'd just be worthless. That engine was designed for race gas, anything else and it'll knock just like you said.

I’d bet so, meth is like 118+octane. Its like Nitrous’s cousin. Of course it’s better when by itself then watered down. Problem is that requires a lot of extra fuel and not every engine has room to spare in there fuel system to pump more, because without it, your back to lean/ engine knocking problems unfortunately.

@nyplantingsgardendesigners5645
The water/meth runs only during high load or high boost, 75%+ throttle or high airflow. So it doesn't spray all that much. It can spray for as long as there is high boost on the motor. The highly atomized water is supposed to evaporate completely before reaching the cylinder and that is what cools the air. The methanol cools too but also acts as a fuel AND octane improver. That is my understanding of all this.

Water and methanol doesn't increases octane index. What it does is reduce temperatures in combustion chamber, what means you can use a higher compression ratio or even use a worst gasoline in the engine without damaging anything. sorry my english is bad, i need to improve.
@KontoVonMir
@KontoVonMir 2 года назад
That's actually incorrect. Methanol does in fact increase the octane rating of the mix. It also cools, but the cooling effect comes mainly from water, which has a significantly higher cooling capacity compared to fuel.

@Samophlan

There isn't much benefit and it also makes it a lot more dangerous if there is a leak. You can't ship anything with over 50% methanol in it either. I use to mix my own but it was because it was way cheaper and I actually ran with less methanol 30/70. Buying and mixing is to much a hassle though. I just use 100% distilled water now.

@csr801996
@csr801996 2 года назад
You burn 20-25% more e85 than pump gas due to being less dense. It is a wash with pump gas vs e85 distance because you can't go as far on e85 but it's cheaper, also e85's octane is around 105 and burns cooler than race gas. You can increase timing with meth or e85 only prob with meth is if you have high timing and pump gas and the meth pump fails there is a good chance you'll loose your engine if your doing a pull and don't notice in time

I have an opinion about using this on a street car though. Look you can pay 10 cents more per gallon of higher octane fuel and only spend a buck for 10 gallons OF PUMP GAS, or you can spend 3 bucks or more for washer fluid PER GALLON. On a street application it makes no sense. On a race application thats different. Detonation is a big problem but shouldn't be for a street application if you built the motor right.

Where I live 93 octane costs $0.80 a gallon more. If I can run 87 octane instead of 93, I can save $16.00 a tankful. The kit for a n/a efi car costs $600.00 + $6.00 a gallon for the fluid, it pays for itself in 10k miles. Something to consider
@csr801996
@csr801996 2 года назад
You're completely missing the point of the kit. When used properly it makes the octane over 100, which here is like $15 a gallon at the pump. It's not designed to allow you to put cheap gas in your engine and then spray meth to bring it back up. I would put the highest available octane at the pump and then let the meth keep the charge Temps down and timing high. For supercharged cars it helps a ton. I've been contemplating running a system like this on my procharged 19 gt but I think I'll just go e85 since it is everywhere In san diego
