Fans were hyped when it was announced that Kim Henkel, co-writer of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, was taking the helm of the fourth film of the franchise and promising to deliver something along the lines of the first movie - a scary, down and dirty independent film shot in Texas. So when Henkel’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation was finally released years after production had wrapped and the audience that had been waiting so long for it saw that the movie was packed with ridiculous, over-the-top characters and hints that the backwoods family at the heart of the series were actually working for the Illuminati, it made many of us ask: “What the F*ck Happened to This Horror Movie?
Watch or Own TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 4 here! amzn.to/3rUSffI
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

I’ll say this for McConaughey...he’s going for it. The rest of this movie has a very “written on ketamine” vibe about it.

I love this movie. Every scene with McConaughey is absolutely hilarious. You can tell in the scenes where he's grabbing Rene's face and messing with her, and she's supposed to be crying, but she's actually laughing, not able to stay in character at times, because he's being so outrageous. I read somewhere they were actually dating at the time.

I saw this movie with my siblings late one night in summer of 98, we were home alone for the weekend and looking for something scary. Either HBO or showtime said it was coming up next so we figured perfect! Well, 20 minutes into it we were laughing and joking about it but we liked it in its own twisted way. Not long after we got it on VHS and I have it on DVD. Its been a few years since I've seen it but I remember being confused about the dude with the symbols in his stomach (doesn't he at one point remove some sort of key or jewelry from his stomach?) And the ending scene where Renee is at the hospital and a woman on a gurney gets pushed by and its played as if this is some big reveal. I always assumed these 2 things that puzzled me were references to the original TCM but I've never seen any of the priors so idk. Still enjoy this weird ass film and Matthew's performance

Renee refused to talk about this movie unless you put it in her contract like they did for One True Thing or pay her a LOT of money. There was an autograph signing where it said she would sign anything of hers. Numerous people brought dvd copies of this movie and she flat out refused to sign them. She folded her arms and shook her head, saying “I don’t care, not signing it and you can’t make me.” They pointed out she had said she would sign her movies and she just said “mmm mmm no” and shook her head. Apparently, that’s not the only one she wouldn’t sign. She is ashamed she made a movie called Case 39 and also refuses to sign those copies as well. So she may acknowledge it now, but she was very rude about it to people a few years ago.

When I was a kid, before I got to see horror movies, other kids would describe scenes in various horror movie that they'd supposedly seen. It was usually embellishments and fantasies based on something an older sibling had told them or it was just something they made up and could get away with because no one else had seen the movie either. Later on, seeing the actual movie could be somewhat disappointing because they didn't contain the bugnuts scenes they'd described. I love the original TCM but it took me a while to come around on it because of this. TCM4 is like one of those movies where everything described is actually in the movie. That's not a put-down and it's not necessarily praise. But that movie is flying its weirdness proudly. It's not a safe, bland cash-in. It's stuck in my head ever since.

I actually think the movie starts out promising. Then somewhere in the middle it does a complete 180, and by the end I'm left baffled how they thought any of this was good. I've watched the movie 4 times and still haven't figured out when exactly that shift occurs. And despite having seen the extended cut, it still seems like there are scenes missing.

The biggest complaint is that there is no gore (no actual chainsaw mutilations), but what you miss with that argument is that this movie has something no other movie that I know has: Sheer intimidation to drive unsettlement. You're safe, you're not x3..."You don't fucking believe this, do you?" - How far can you push a person on such a traumatic rollor coaster of terror and false relief before their minds break? That Heather character was a blast! So cartoonish but the actress pulled it off well! I've seen some teenage girls act like her and I can't help but smile and laugh at their behavior that reminds me of the character!

I'm back with a hot take, Texas chainsaw 1 is all build up for One of the all-time money shot moments where Leatherface is spinning around with the chainsaw. It's so ethereal and unexpected that it almost feels it's the closing moments of a ballet That it makes it all worth it's sitting through a grim fucked up 90 minutes.

I like this movie because it dives into the illuminati/serial killer/mkultra conspiracy... you dont see that often, just the same old movies about aliens, assassinations and doomsday predictions, so this is a welcome change to the conspiracy movie 😂

I absolutely hated this when it came out but over the years, I still put 1 & 2 at the top, 4 is better than every other movie carrying the franchise name. One thing this movie did right was put back in the rambling random weirdness where all instances of movie moving toward a destination are suspended in a hell of insane psycho babble (see Hooper's Eaten Alive as well) that Tobe Hooper was so good at. It's often jarring and seems like the movie is broken at times, but that effect gives it a unique element and the were lots of strangely imbalanced movies out at this time like Oliver Stone's U-turn, Freddy Got Fingered. Time has been kind to this one in a weird way.

I had a VHS copy that used the original title The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The movie definitely improves with the censored bits added. It lets you into the heroine's awful family situation & Velmer even more psychotic. The Illuminati addition was a stroke of genius & the perfect aspect to wind up this Uber crazy take. Also a WOKE Leatherface would embraced by the critics in 2022.... So much fun & seems as tho the inmates are running the asylum...

I tried watching this one time and couldn't finish it. Its more comedy than anything, but since its not a comedy movie it just bombs. Matthew and Rene couldn't save this one. The worst is a dwarf sized leatherface howling and cooing throughout.

To me, this dumpster fire always seemed like an early entry into the "film makers hating on Hollywood" flicks. Kind of like John Waters' Cecil B. Demented. Except I actually like that movie. Chainsaw 4 was like a parody of a Chainsaw movie with some weird statement about Hollywood and it's perverting of art at the end. The first time I saw it, I just figured some incompetent people made it and didn't have a clue how to make a horror film. It seems like a movie made by commission. Which is ironic, since it was made low budget so they could do what they wanted. All I can say is...Mr. Henkel can't hide behind the argument that "the studio" or "producers" stepped in and messed it up. All on him.

@@boomstickcritique902 I can forgive Chainsaw 3D for some of it's sins because of Alexandra Daddario. And, I won't lie, the 3D effects made me jump in the theater. So, not as good on DVD, but...Alexandra Daddario....

@@TheJohno95 Thought the 3d sucked except for one shot in the casket. As for Daddario she was super hot but acting wise she blowed to me but that was prolly cause the script was terrible but I have never thought she was good actor to be honest. Other then being hot I dont see much to her. The biggest problem with 3d was it has great potential with the idea of the film with Leatherface finding long lost relative who isnt crazy an seeing how that develops but its all pissed away. Where as Next Generation is just terrible from start to finish an never has any potential. Matt makes that film one long enjoyable to laugh at joke. Where as 3d starts with potential has it an bores with such stupid script that is super generic.
@TheJohno95
@TheJohno95 3 года назад
@@boomstickcritique902 Both movies are super-weak. The first one is a classic. Second is just gory fun! The 3rd was ok to me. Not great, because it got edited all to heck, but not terrible. Next Gen makes my head hurt. And it's not the actors. It's just written so poorly it's sad. The remake was alright. And the Prequel to the remake was frikkin' awesome! 3D....Like I say....I like looking at Alexandra, but that's about all I can say for it. Without 3D effects, it's weak. You're right...It HAD potential. They just wasted it. A quick GOOD follow up could have been good. But, they didn't. I haven't watched the latest. Being from this era, I'm guessing it sucks. I've been wrong before, though.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the classic that showed many other horror films, the sequel is a cult favorite and one of my favorites from the series, the third was fine, the family was interesting to me especially with the daughter of leatherface but the next generation is very a let down except for McConaughey. He's entertaining then ever in this.
