Showing how I used a -4 Nitrous fitting to adapt the pressure port, used -4 Nitrous Line, used a 1/8 mpt female to -4 male fitting to use a gauge from a cheap Freon fill setup. Stuff I happen to have available 👍😉

Francisco Vasquez I broke my phone so haven’t made videos in a while. I pulled the valve body and governor assembly. I haven’t found anything in the valve body but did find some trash in the governor and the case filter was damaged. I’ll try and video reinstall and results. 👍

Ive got a TH400 w/reverse manual valve body. I’m going to install a pressure sensor &, temp sensor. Could you please tell me What are the temp and pressure values I am wanting to see? Are they the values that were talked about?

Your pressures will be higher than the ones in my video. As for exact figures I’m not sure but I’d expect closer to 200+. Temperature will depend greatly on the efficiency of your transmission cooler and torque converter. Iirc you want the transmission fluid to be similar to engine temperature or lower, it’s when you get above 200*_250* is when clutches get burned up. Do a Google search to verify recommended transmission temperature. JD

dragginfool After cleaning out the Governor it fixed my shifting, slipping etc. so I never rechecked the pressures. When I get my TH400 back in after the Ultra Bell install I’ll try and get those pressures. It would be interesting to see if they change! JD

Is that transmission built with the line pressure kit that holds the transmission at full line pressure all the time? If not the pressures at idle, with the TV cable NOT connected to the throttle linkage, should be in the min values and with the cable pulled out fully, by hand, and the engine at idle, the pressure should be in the max range. When the transmission is in 1 and 2, the line pressure goes to full by design. All the other gears, the line pressure will change as the TV cable is pulled. By looking at the numbers, I am guessing the TV cable was connected to the throttle, with a small amount of pre-load. So with a little pull of the cable, the line pressure goes up above the min value, but below the max value. Try having a helper pull the tv cable for you while you record the pressures. Park Min 55-70 Max 150-175 Reverse Min 95-150 Max 235-260 Neutral Min 55-70 Max 150-175 3rd Min 70-90 Max 135-165 2nd Min 135-165 Max 135-165 1st Min 135-165 Max 135-165

Tom Rassier The TH400 doesn’t have a TV cable for modulating valvebody pressure. The TH400 uses an electronic “kick down” solenoid for activating the low speed/passing down shift. The valvebody and Governor Assembly work together for automatic shift characteristics, with manual low having more pressure. The problem turned out to be debri in the Governor Assembly spool Valve. I think the 700R4/4L60 was the GM transmission with a TV cable that must be properly adjusted or the clutches get burned up. Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it! JD

HeadFlowInc haha, I had my units confused. That one has a modulator valve doesn’t it? Are you still trouble shooting it? I imagine you have already trouble shot that? It’s hard to really trouble shoot without actually being hands on. If and when you solve it, I hope you will share the solution with us!

Jason Cameron I can’t figure out what could be wrong except debri in the valvebody affecting fluid flow. The clutches aren’t burned up, all the pressures are ok except the 3rd gear is low in proportion to the others. The pressure reading for 3rd would be fine if it were stock. 🤔 It’s definitely being stubborn 🤔🙄😳

Jason Cameron I wish I knew, I’m hoping someone with more TH400 experience chimes in. 😉. If the slipping isn’t a pressure loss in the VB via a stuck valve, Stuck Governor valve, or stuck Modulator valve it could be something like a lip seal or the intermediate “pin” being to short? 🤷‍♂️

Have the same problem 1-2 over 180 psi and 3 yust over a 100 psi so what did you find or how much did it make after the fix, i really need some ideas i cant find the problem ?

Trash in the Governor assembly! Easy fix, pulled and cleaned the Governor assembly, make sure the spool valve inside can move freely

Governor assembly spool valve was stuck. Easy fix

Maybe needs a b&m shift kit. And maybe your getting some leaking between the spool where it moves in the bore of the valve body

Dave vonAnderseck Can you believe all the trouble and issues was debri in the governor assembly? Literally there was a small piece of black plastic stuck in the governor assembly keeping the spool valve from moving. I cleaned everything up, polished the spool valve and it works great!!! I even started dialing in my governor WOT shift points by lightening the “wing weights”, right now I have it set to shift by itself @5300 rpms WOT in drive. Later I’ll get it dialed in a tad higher once I know where the power peak is. Thanks for watching and the feedback I appreciate it!!! JD

Bourdon tube style gauge: try not to go full scale. You pass 95% of scale and it time to think about swapping to more range. Yes there's some headroom for overrun, but why go there: once sprung, that gauge is doomed. Pressures: yours look pretty near what tci does with their 400's? Except P and N seem a little high - check out their chart online. By comparison, [bone stock] numbers per ATSG [brakes + 1krpm]: N=55-70, D3=60-90, D2=135-160. I doubt slippage is a line pressure problem, and the pump is ok. So... slippage is only in 3rd gear, or something else? I trust you started with the simplest thing: disconnect shifter linkage [not running] then operate lever by hand to exercise the valve through all positions then leave in neutral - with shifter also in neutral, make sure linkage goes back on and does not require any movement of arm on transmission. Adjust if needed to get things sync'd once more. That fails... tear into it: a cut seal, check ball problems, who knows. If you are having a problem with only reverse and 3rd, something in direct clutch circuit needs attention.
