This made me tear up. I'm not gay but I understand some of your struggles. My parents have disowned me too because I was a troublesome daughter as a teen. I later got pregnant and my mom literally said to get an abortion or she was through with me. It's going to be 5 years that I haven't spoken to mine either. It's really hard but it has made me stronger.

I have been recently disowned by my own sister. I wasn't a good enough brother in her mind. It hurts, but I know it's for the best in the long run. I used to be one of those shitty people who “hated” gays. I now realize how much of a pathetic,douchebag I was. I am embarrassed for my past actions. I was raised traditionally and was always told if I were gay id go to hell so I projected my own pain onto others. I couldn’t accept myself so I sought to it that others didn’t as well. I recently just apologized to someone I did that too and I feel so much better but I will always feel resentment towards myself for the suffering I caused that individual. Moral of the story: Don’t be an asshole. Life is too short. Don’t judge people.

My parents did not disown me when I came out to them as being bi. On the other hand, they did not want to talk about it. I attempted to talk to my mother and she said that she didn't want to discuss it. I never brought up the subject to my father after I came out. Thank you Levi.

I understand...Mine disowned me in my 40's over disagreements about drugged out sister and daughter they enabled. They vocally disowned me to everyone. But, I have to say, it has been a blessing. No drama......no crap, as they only called me when they needed me to do something anyway. It was toxic for all of us. I have much enjoyed the peace for my family.

I am crying. I really am... children or young people need support from their family, they need people in their life to help them through hard times. Disowning somebody is probably the worst thing you can ever do for anyone ever, ever, ever, ever, and guess what? Ever!!! It should actually probably against the law because you are pretty much neglecting or abandoning your own child. I had a family that didn't like what I did and I got addicted to drugs. And no support or care when I OD'd I cleaned up and now my girlfriends family is like my own.

I wasn't gay, I was just in need of attention and had very few boundaries with people I loved and I had mostly a lot of mental illness from things that happened to me as a child but your message helped me a lot. No one should be talked to and told the things that we've been told when we have never and would never hurt anyone ourselves. We're pretty good people, or at least we try. I hope mom is happy where ever she is. I don't think she ever loved me. But all the memories are hard to have. I have all the best memories of my life with her. Ah, to bad... I feel like tearing up, but she would have looked down on that.

My parents have just only just disowned me. I took money off them and made them miserable. They hate my partner and they don't want to see either of us. However, although I feel empty inside, I feel I can breath again and as you said, I can be my own person. Without criticism or made to feel ashamed. You are an incredibly strong person, and watching your video has given me some strength which I need right now. Been 5 years for me too; no holidays, birthday cards, nothing. They turned my siblings against me. In a way is worse than a death knowing that your own parents don’t want you.
Honestly I can't imagine wanting my family who could not love who I am. You are kind, gentle, forgiving. This video was quite a while ago. I hope that everything worked out for you. For those still facing this trauma know that family is not blood but acceptance. We create our own families who love and support us. Everyone should follow their own hearts but for me I would simply move on and not look back. It gets better is not just a saying. Life is what we build day by day, decision by decision. Only those who love you for you deserve a place in your life.

I wish my parents would have disowned me to be honest. I came out in 2009 and instead of disowning me, they began a total bombardment of hate texts, emails, and manipulative phone calls. It culminated in my mother telling me she was praying for God to kill her so that my pain of losing her under those circumstances would be so great that I would seek to become straight. Eventually they manipulated me back into the closet and into conversion therapy, the result of which has been five extremely miserable years trying to live to please my parents, years I will never get back. I don't think parental disownment, providing the person being disowned is of legal age to be on their own, is the worst thing. The worst thing is when they go as far as they can short of disownment, to the point where you are left with a decision of either conforming to their will or disowning them. It's a very manipulative tactic because when you have to disown them, they pin it on you and you are strapped with the burden. At least if you are disowned, you can wipe your hands clean and take no blame.

Just as our father has loved us. Jesus was known as the friend of sinners. He did not forsake us. So for a parent to forsake their own child, is also sin in the eyes of god. We are not judges. Only god can judge. We are here to love one another just as Christ has loved us.

It’s amazing how strong you are; I admire that. Disagreement is not a reason to stop loving. I don’t think you had a loving parents to begin with. It’s a huge test when your child chooses something else to what you believe or find is true. It’s a very hard thing to a lot of people to sit and accept that their child is an independent individual and regardless how this bring failure or loss emotions, it’s not about you! I don’t think they know how to work with it as they see it white and black only! They are doing their best based on what they are and I hope you continue to have love in your heart for them; they who cannot love are the most in need for it.

Everyone has two families...one that they were born into/grew up with, and the other which has grown around them and was chosen by them over time. If one does not offer you unconditional love, the other usually will. Which is which differs with each of us. I have grown a wonderful chosen family in the ashes of a dysfunctional birth family, and have no regrets. I know it's been a couple years since your post Levi, but I hope you've come to the same realization
I went through the same rejection over forty years ago.( i am lynn Baker) the best thing that you can do is put it behind you and go forward! I was bullied so seriously by my peers that it caused emotional damage that suppressed my innate potential to the point of lifelong emotional disability.

Well it's been my 5th month being disowned by my family for not being Muslim. I'm thankful I had several friendships and community. I haven’t seen/ talked to my both parents for over 12 years now. It’s very sad and I’m still trying to hold myself together and move on. Both of them were very physically and emotionally abusive, yet I still dream of being with them and me having supportive family. Just a dream ..

Even though your parents seem to not giving you the love you need and deserve, you still tell them that you love them. Even though your parents aren't there for you, you're still there for them. Even though they shame you, you love yourself. Some people commited suicide because they weren't accepted by their family, but you kept staying strong............Your parents should be proud of you.
I was disown after I got discharged from the military and came out. It's been over 15 years. It's been difficult, however, the relationships I have now are are with loving cherished people who love people for who they are and not for who they would like you to be.

I would never have imagined that by 2011 such mindless cruelty would STILL be happening, it's just amazing and so depressing. But it's not all about religion; I am Episcopalian, and our priest is openly gay. It's more the fault of fundamentalism in any religion. They flatly refuse to see reason (and science). I can completely relate to your message. I have been estranged from my parents for about 28 years. Dad is now dead and mom is still kicking. She told me on multiple occasions that she wished I was dead and she would rather me be dead than be gay. After the first ten years, I gave up on them and stopped loving them and to be truthful, I started hating them. I haven't talked to my mom in over 20 years. Thanks you for posting the video. Thank you for sharing...my sister disowned me without a conversation. And her kids blocked me from every thing. I have never said anything ugly or mean. I have put up with a lot of her bullied style of a relationship. We are in our 40s and her children are in their 20 s.
I had an argument with my mother earlier this month I still live in the same house but it feels like the nature of relationship has changed and I know I'm not always a perfect son but over the years it has felt like she, I guess the best way to describe it is it feels like contrary to how she acts she doesn't want me around. I mean like I've said I haven't always been perfect but through out my life she has accused me of being selfish and no matter what she says I feel like her love is conditional and that condition is to do whatever she says. Before we fought I told her I was thinking about moving out I did this because I thought she would like the idea. Now I shouldn't have gotten mad or react the way I did but what she said that I cannot and will not let go of is that she accused me of wanting to move out because she thought I didn't want to do chores or some BS like that. I wanted to move out because I thought it would make things easier for her and because I'm almost twenty six, and have no life. I have the last few years seen people around her age that I've known for as long as I can remember die and she seems fine with the idea of having a friend of hers show me how to take care of myself after she dies? What the fuck! I'm seriously now just fucking realizes how selfish and messed up that is on her part I deserve to live my life! I am not just going to wait around for her to die to have a life that is my own if that is selfish than so be it. I have let myself become lazy and complacent but the worst part is that she enabled me she never gave a kick in the ass to get my life together. I mean I'm almost thirty and have nothing to show for my life while everyone I know around my age is either married and or having kids and I'm just stuck where I've always been. I feel like I'm a ghost sometimes I feel as if I died and now I'm watching everyone I know live while I am stuck and left to watch. The worst part though and I mean this most sincerely is that after finally seeing my mother for who she is and not who I'd like her to be is that my heart feels like it is being ripped out of me constantly.

knightof1990 thanks for your kind words. It's easier to forgive when you work from the basis of 'only a damaged person would treat someone else like that'. That doesn't mean I don't get angry at the unfairness of it all, but for the most part I do find it difficult to hold a grudge!

My family disowned me too. No matter how hard it was, I had to move on. I miss my family too but life goes on. I will not give up on life just because people walked out on me. There is nothing wrong with being a loner.
