Thanos Was Right - Avengers Infinity War

In an unprecedented event over 19 films, The Mad titan Thanos, was built up as the ultimate villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With him successfully achieving his goal of collecting all infinity stones to eradicate half of all life, specifically creatures, with the snap of his finger.
For a film franchise known for happy endings and feel good glimmers of home, Avengers Infinity had a very sad and demoralizing ending.
And as much as I am glad that Thanos is a fictional character and did instantly kill half of all creatures in the universe, I can't help but realize, that thanos was right.
And by that I mean, we need to step and look at the situation. As thanos rationally puts it, there just are not enough resources in the universe.
And more importantly, the universe is incapable of sustaining so much life. But historically, catastrophic events that resulted in large amounts of death have greatly benefited humanity as a whole.
Take for instance, the Black death, the bubonic plague, the one and only yersinia pestis. From 1347 to 1351 upto 200 million people in eurasia died. Killing upwards of 1/3 of people in asia. While certainly devastating at the time, over 600 years later our world is a better place because of the plague.
For starters, the plague ended feudalism in Europe. Feudalism was a glorified system of slavery where peasants, the majority of europeans, worked for their feudal lords in exchange for their feudal lords protecting them. Feudalism was a corrupt system where the peasants worked hard for their feudal lords so they could be taxed to earn their protection, so the feudal lords could pay tribute to the monarchies that offered the bulk of the military protection, and those monarchies could give money to the catholic church, where the church would endorse the monarchy as having the divine right to rule over the land.
So in a nutshell, people worked to send their money up the ladder to keep powerful people in power while getting very little in return. Unless of course a monarch declared war on another monarch, in which case these poor overworked people would then be drafted to fight a war fight for the king that was supposed to protecting them.
But a 1/3 drop in the population quickly ended this system and allowed people to do it style.
Oh yeah, because under feudalism, was only for procreation hence the name
But the end of feudalism brought other benefits, with churches and monasteries being the primary places to provide treatment for the sick, the clergy suffered the greatest levels of casualties. Upwards of 90% in some places. The sudden loss of clergy had some major effects. The first was that over the course of a few years the well educated and proficient clergy that died were replaced with hastily trained and less than competent replacements. These subpar clergy led to european wide investment in training of the clergy. Before the plague europe had 29 universities that opened over the course of 400 years, which by the way there was only one thing someone could major in back then and it was being a priest. Within 45 years, the number would jump to 40. That is a steep increase in devotion to education.
The second benefit was technology. With feudalism being glorified slavery, there was no incentive to invest in technology as there was no worries about the scarcity of labor; it is no coincidence that the black plague of the 14th century gave rise to the renaisance and age of discover in the 15th century. feudalism kept people so busy working, that they had no time to worry about anything else. But the massive death brought about by the plague made people see that there was more to life. Feudalism wasn't providing the protection that was promised and the persistent death gave birth to the idea of distractions to numb the emotional pain. The collapse of feudalism lead to mass migrations of people that lead to a sharing of ideas that gave birth music, art, and theater that made the renaissance famous.
So while the black plague was devastating at the time, it dramatically shaped the world for the better in the long run. And with it taking european cities over 300 years to reach their pre-plague populations, it shows that thanos's snap would have long term effects to the benefit of the galaxy.
But if that isn't enough to show the long term benefits of how thanos was ultimately saving the universe, look at the world's leading economies. According to the UN, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom are three of the top 5 economies in the world. They have a devastating similarity. They all suffered catastrophic loss of population and infrastructure during world war 2. With many areas of these nations being bombed into oblivion. The destruction of these nations, forced them to rebuild. New York City's pre war sky scrapers the metropolitan life tower, woolworth building, bank of manhattan trust building, chrysler building,

The problem with Thanos is not that he did something; the problem lies with him not exploring other options. He took a data point from Gamorras planet and that other planet he came from ( i forget the name) and extrapolated from insufficient data . . . . . .He is at best unimaginative and lacks a degree of critical self analysis . . . . .essentially he is reactive rather than procative and lacks the imagination or humility to consider other options.

i was thinking if Thanos randomly killed half the galaxy, was he not then, also facing a 50/50 chance of disappearing too? you see i do see some selfish behavior if it turns out he was not involved in his own "death pool". and how could he? being the bearer of the glove... thoughts?

@@johnmonk66 it's called chaos. I observe and point out the meer truth. As a pine cone cannot seed without fire, and overgrowth would kill everything. I hope that helps. The big bang "hypothesis" is not factual and we do not know our beginnings physically. We can however find the balance between life and death and all that lies between. Such as growth etc. Which as I mentioned above, needs chaos to flourish
@NoLeadsEnt

@@johnmonk66 in regards to the pine cone, yes, but, no. as it above, it is below, and the reflections of nature exist the same on all and every levels. say tornado's, volcano's, viruses, and round and round.. no disrespect!!!! non-the less, i mean it as to say, the beginnings are from "ashes to ashes & dust to dust" as to say from the flames we emerge and towards the flames we exit. a proverb on hell perhaps?(not a biblical man to heart, but,) as to fear the inevitable everlasting self(above the anatomical plane) in replacement for a physical being of worthless existences/materialistic? this conversation is far into the depths of many topics, but, i'd like it if you could narrow down the avenue you'd like to discus, so we can focus on one topic at a time, and enjoy the journey as it unfolds :D

@@johnmonk66 it's a metaphor or parable. all levels of life contain the same patterns. From micro to macro if that makes more sense. The uni~verse is but that. As why the Bible says in the begining was the word, and the word was God. Like you say the big bang created light. When we study light at its base photon, it starts to consciously behave. Getting back to the point, all things are aligned to perfection in the physical plain. Chaos is but a part of this cycle as life needs life to live, to begin with. It is our perception that governs good and evil, as they are separate sides to the same coin. Here's a physical mataphor you csn relate too. Physically fire and ice both burn. 😉 Right..

Apart from the fact that Thanos killed half of existence directly when he had the ability to do ANYTHING with the Infinity Stones, having a group of close followers of various species that are as indoctrinated as most Jedi, conquering people beforehand, decimated the way governments across the galaxy (some of which included species that were potentially on the verge of extinction prior eg: if the Covenant Prophets from Halo were in the MCU they'd be fucked because they have massive issues with breeding anyway), massive collateral damage through stuff like vehicles crashing with people still in them (as seen with Infinity War's post credits scene... at least twice) and the possibility of reducing certain planets to wastelands dominated by nuclear winters or worse through 50% of the universe involving members of various species at various stages of advancement being snapped while operating power plants involving various forms of energy (eg: if some species was experimenting with Dark Matter and the alien in charge of operating the machinery used was part of the unlucky 50%). In short Thanos is the biggest psychotic fuckhead in Sci-fi since Sith Lords like Vitiate (who wanted to consume all life in the galaxy), Darth Nihilus (who wanted the same), Darth Traya (who wanted to kill the Force itself), Darth Sidious and Darth Krayt (who wanted to dominate the galaxy and have followers more indoctrinated than those used by Mass Effect's Reapers).

It wouldn’t even be the governments doing so nobody could really blame anyone besides the weird purple alien guy who got killed. The worst that would happen would be some meaningless protests. Wiping half the population out would definitely be more likely to start that “chain reaction” into anarchy because it would actually DESTROY current lives, whereas sterilization would maintain the status quo. The arguments are a bit weak - comparing Thanos to other super heroes, and their faults, does not make Thanos right, it makes him equal to the others. To make Thanos Right, you need to explore his arguments for his actions, and compare thise actions to moral, or immoral, actions of others for an objective comparison. The argument could be is it moral to kill one person to save five (the moral question of the train)? This argument could also be compared to Hari Seldon's actions in Foundation. This is why this movie is so bad. It allows some toxic ideas to spread in people minds. Some years later when global crisis is on really dangerous levels undoubtedly there will be the suggestion of clearing half the planets life so the other half may live in peace. This idea is destructive and what Thanos suggested and does not provide a real solution. Cause if you think about it it means that the crisis will reappear a few years later and it will repeat itself. The real solution would be to find ways to prevent such crisis like reducing births around the world and reduce the waste of resources. The solution Thanos is suggesting lasts very little. Through earth's history species and species managed to survive without to be forced to kill half of their populations. The best example is that of the wolves. When the food is not enough to feed the pack many of them decide not to have sex (even during their life) in order to preserve the balance of nature.

He killed innocent people. Separated families from each other. (The scene where he took gamora from her mother comes to mind for something he did before the snap.) Turned two of his "daughters" into killing machines. (One who he tortured for not living up to his expectations and another he was willing to throw off a cliff.) To make a long comment short: thanos HAS done terrible things and he shouldn't be treated like a hero! Adolf Hitler pretty much wanted to do the same thing that thanos did with the inrinity gems and you don't see him as a hero!

well if he just doubled the resources they would only last for longer time, the same problems reemerge though but bigger than before, secondly you can't create infinite everything as it would be impossible, there is only so much matter and energy around. the guanlet is powerful but it can only alter or use what exists in the universe already it cannot create more universe.
@globalistgamer6418
@globalistgamer6418 4 года назад
Halving the population is also a temporary measure, as he made this unsustainable in the long-term by destroying the stones after only doing it once. It's fair to say that creating infinite resources might be impossible even with the stones, but it shouldn't be necessary. There are more reasonable solutions, like spreading enough technological advancement to prevent populations from wanting to grow unsustainably, and altering the mental state of the species that wouldn't naturally stop at this point (most sentient species would, as they are shown to be psychologically highly anthropomorphic). The real problem is that Feige/Russos/etc wanted to include the specific plot event of the fingersnap from the comics, while at the same time changing Thanos to be a noble, empathetic character that could carry the central role in a movie. It's very difficult to resolve these aims coherently, so they end up with this papered-over justification that makes less sense the more you think about it.

The issue with eliminating half of all life forms, instead of half of all SENTIENT life forms, is that it also reduces the capacity of a planet to replenish its natural resources. So the scale isn't necessarily balanced, just made smaller with the same issues still present with the same inevitable conclusion. The Reapers from Mass Effect did nothing wrong.

This has got to be the worst channel on youtube, he praises Thanos for killing half of all life in the galaxy, even though he could have just doubled the resources and the outcome would have been the same. Then he goes on to say Captain America isn't heroic because he helped defend the entire world in Wakanda, which if he hadn't done that the invasion would have let to the destruction of America anyway, clearly. And also the part where he criticizes black panther as a non-heroic figure for taking non-FDE approved drugs, is hilarious to me, because how is that at all comparable to Thanos murdering half of a planet. In short: Thanos is a villain his intentions are good, but his work is flawed. That's what makes a great villain, a villain you can understand at some level, but can still see how crazy the man actually is. I recommend everyone reading this to watch the video: "Why Thanos Is a Perfectly Written villain". It explains this in a very good way.
@Justin-nx3pw

I'm pretty sure this video is satire. It wouldn't make sense otherwise since most of the stats don't even support his points about mass death in history because they are not used in appropriate context and other factors are left out. And he is leaving out tons of reasons why certain characters are the way that they are or did what they did. It seems like a joke to me but I mean if its not then hes just bad at making arguments.
