fasting is obviously and undoubtedly natural, because men have to go out hunting to eat, and they can't eat very often, there are no refrigerators to preserve food, nor the idea of salt, and everyone who fasts only benefits, You can come up with 1000 studies against fasting, and the only thing I can think of is, industry buying science again to make people sick and sell drugs and filthy high-calorie foods, where they sell more drugs and treatments and tests etc... the food pyramid was created to sell medicines, and more than half of the studies are the same, nothing can take away the confidence of fasting. the system is shaking because the ancient secret of fasting is now available to simple people, who should be billions of dollars in sick people.

They can publish another 50 studies if they need to. I was fat and hungry for over 20 years. My life changed for the MUCH better when I started focusing on nutrient dense food, healthy fats, and skipping breakfast if I wasn't hungry. SPOILER: When you get enough protein, fat, and nutrient density, the hunger goes away for LONG periods of time while you get happier.

I think the primary focus of fasting studies was never really about losing weight; that was a secondary discovery. The real interest was in how fasting affects our cells and promotes rejuvenation. For example, Dr. Valter Longo and Dr. David Sinclair have both highlighted the cellular benefits of fasting. Their research shows that fasting can trigger processes that repair and regenerate cells, enhancing overall health and longevity. Weight loss turned out to be a side effect due to better control of total calorie intake. Later studies focusing specifically on weight loss found that fasting alone isn't the key. The real magic lies in how fasting can improve cellular health and potentially extend our lifespan. I think this is also a more important part in life to focus on right now with all health issues we are facing!

I'm over 60 as well and fasting was my only real answer after losing the first 20 lbs. on OMAD. As we age, it becomes much harder to burn calories. Fasting demands your body to use its own energy. Fasting forces the refrigerator to get emptied out and move on to the freezer where the fat is stored. It cannot be denied.

@mikepetrilli4686 Haha, and good for you! Yes, I have centenarians in my family that I'm sure never fasted! I'm also sure that there are many things that contribute to my well-being. I don't care if you fast. I enjoy fasting. Hunger isn't much of an issue; nonetheless, there are benefits of ghrelin and the cascade of hormonal responses. I like the energy boost and clarity that I get on a good fast! I like having a day without cooking. Although I love cooking and also feel great when I eat. I travel a lot. My kids live abroad. When in Paris I will eat croissants and I will enjoy the wine in Italy. When I'm home I fast occasionally. Generally, I eat when I'm hungry and fast when I'm not, or when I decide to. It suits my lifestyle! It's easy for me to do. I'm a jazz singer with bands all over. I love the way I feel and look; ageless and full of life and energy!

@@Summer-zv1tq I very much so understand fasting. I’ve been fasting since I was a teenager. My family was religious about it, straight up dry fasting for 24hrs every 3rd Thursday of the month. I then carried that into adulthood. I think it comes down to preference and what you’re trying to accomplish. Either will ultimately help people lose weight or feel better. But maybe there are specific things you are trying to accomplish like getting your insulin under control. Coming from a type 2 diabetes prone family( mom has it & grandmother died from it) fasting went from a spiritual thing for me to a health thing.

Fasting and ketone metabolism has changed my life in so many ways. People can make a study to say what they want but real outcomes mean more to me than some bullshit study. Also people don't understand that it takes more than 14 hours to switch to ketones to any meaningful degree if you were eating sugars and carbs. The benefit comes from your body fueling from the fat on your body including the visceral organ fat where diseases usually come from. So if someone is eating a carb based diet, anything under 22-24 hours is probably not useful enough to have meaningful change.

I once did a fasting experiment on myself. For four weeks, I ate normally, only restricting calories. For the next four weeks, I kept the weekly average calories the same, but fasted for two days a week. My exercise levels were the same in both periods. Normally, weight loss slows as a diet goes on. This time, I lost a few pounds more in the fasting month than I did in the non-fasting month. It was enough to convince me that fasting does work, but it was not sustainable for me. I find it easier to maintain a calorie target eating five small meals a day. For others, intermittent fasting is easier. Whatever works best for you is a win!

I am 48 years old and after being suddenly handicapped due to a surgeon who cut off my hip flexors I have not been able to walk much at all for the last two years and have been left alone in isolation at home, I now for the first time in my life suffer from obesity with a BMI of 31.7, abdominal fat, and sudden muscle loss with cramps. I experience high inflammation and pain. My heart rate rises with little exertion, making me feel exhausted and breathless. I have chest pressure and notice my heart works hard even with small activities, causing me to sweat heavily. Additionally, I have painful fatty deposits associated with Dercum's disease in the lymph areas under my arms and groin and asymmetrical abdominal fat. I have pain on the right side where my liver is located and have noted lymphatic issues. I experience nerve pain in my ankle and hip following a medical injury, and extensive scar tissue that has fused with other tissue, making it impossible for me to walk or stand on my left side. A bad surgeon intentionally handicapped me and cut up my left hip. I cannot walk far and use crutches or a walker. I was once a dancer, weighing 76 kilos. Now, I have been isolated at home for more than two years, bedridden 80% of the time and weighing 93 kilos. My family and relatives, who are narcissists, have abandoned me because a handicap doesn't fit their family image. They have no empathy for me, as they only feel anxiety around people who need help. I am deeply grieving and a bit unhinged due to social media abuse and isolation. I eat alone, talk to myself, and cannot go outside despite living in the capital. I see no one but healthcare personnel who gaslight me beyond words. I cannot sleep due to the healthcare injury in my hip, which has also damaged my lower back and foot. The crutches have injured my neck and shoulders, resulting in a frozen shoulder and pain in my left chest and arm. I am utterly exhausted. Life is a literal hell, as I lie awake most of the night with ice on my body to calm the nerve and muscle pains. The cramps are due to muscle imbalances. However, I still need to eat like everyone else. What diet should I follow to improve my situation as best I can on my own? I need to try something different than continuing with Uber Eats daily. Only suggest things if you know what you are talking about. Hopefully, Thomas can read this and advise on what one can do in this health and life crisis, focusing on diet and mental improvement despite my inability to sleep. I fall asleep twice a day, snoring loudly, and wake up with pain like being beaten with a police baton over my hip, foot, ankle, and left side of the neck and shoulder. It's an insane nightmare. I have limited funds and usually order simple ready-made foods like Thai food, McDonald's, salads, or smoothie bowls from Uber Eats. Today, I ordered meat and some better small things from a grocery store because I’ve had enough of fast food. I hate it. But, as I cannot lift my left arm and cannot stand for long, cooking is very difficult and exhausting. I am trying to switch to simpler and cleaner eating, and I do feel better if I eat something like 300 grams of steak with sauerkraut rather than Thai food with white rice or a McDonald’s burger with carrots instead of fries and a Coke Zero. I am fully aware that fast food is not good at all. But, when you have no energy to sit up, stay awake, and feel hungry, and cannot get outside for sunlight, it is very difficult not to rely on Uber Eats. Please advise what I can do in my present situation without judgment. When I was fit and weighed 76 kilos, I danced and did martial arts daily and could do 80 push-ups in a minute. But that is not who I am now. Today, after gaslighting, narcissistic abuse, a family that abandoned me and turned against me, a healthcare system that failed me, and a psychopathic surgeon who intentionally handicapped me, I feel utterly lost. My father, who is a doctor and orthopedic surgeon, prefers to maintain his reputation with his colleagues rather than stand up for his own son. My sister and father, the most jealous narcissists, hated that I was always creative, a dancer, an actor, and later a journalist who lived in five countries. They have no soul, no ambition, and only care about a shallow, fake life filled with name-dropping rich friends. They have no honesty, no honor, and zero empathy for anyone who doesn't make them more famous or rich. So, here I lie, struggling to write this text due to so much inflammation in my hands and lower arms. This is my reality, and you have no idea what hell of abuse I have been through. Please, do not judge but offer advice and support if you can. Thank you for reading to the end. Have a good weekend!

Hey mate, that is a tough deal you have been dealt. Personally I'm on keto, but I'm planning to and think you should look into the carnivore diet. A lot of people seem to get really good results from it.
@SimplicityForGood
@SimplicityForGood 10 дней назад
@@George-lz6ue Thanks for reaching out. It means a lot to connect with others through social media platforms who have tested and found results in areas that conventional healthcare often neglects. It's frustrating when public healthcare providers refuse to help despite it being their job, showing little interest or ideas for making things better. I just received my order of meats, spices, cream, eggs, and other essentials. I'll be starting today and seeing how I manage. It's challenging to cook while dealing with fatigue and pain, especially when I can only stand for a couple of minutes due to my hip and foot issues. The lack of sleep and sunlight doesn’t help either. However, at least my freezer and fridge are now full of various kinds of meat. I will start counting calories to understand what I've been eating and what I will eat now. I just sat down and counted the vegan breakfast I have been ordering from a cool place called Mahalo, which makes very tasty smoothie bowls. However, I am shocked after calculating the calories of what’s in the smoothie bowl, which includes: - Mango: 1 cup (200g) = 100 kcal - Avocado: 1/2 medium (75g) = 120 kcal - Lemon: 1 tbsp (15g) = 4 kcal - Ginger: 1 tsp (5g) = 5 kcal - Turmeric: 1 tsp (3g) = 9 kcal - Spinach: 1 cup (30g) = 7 kcal - Blue spirulina: 1/2 liter (500ml) = 20 kcal - Moringa: 1 tsp (2g) = 7 kcal - Cereals: 1/2 cup (30g) = 110 kcal - Chia pudding: 1/4 cup (60g) = 120 kcal - Mango & passion fruit purée: 2 tbsp (30g) = 25 kcal - Strawberries: 1/2 cup (75g) = 30 kcal - Peanut butter: 2 tbsp (32g) = 190 kcal - Almond butter: 2 tbsp (32g) = 200 kcal - Strawberry sprinkles: 1 tbsp (10g) = 50 kcal The total estimated calories for the smoothie bowl are approximately 997 kcal. I have to get serious about my diet. Now I understand why many vegan girls seem overweight, like Greta Thunberg, who eats at this place almost every day. I've seen her there many times as she lives in my area. This is what I have been eating every morning for the last 2-3 months. After eating this around 11 am every morning, I would only need some small amount of meat in the evening since I felt full from the smoothie bowl. However, it's impossible to order just a small amount of meat on Uber Eats; it always comes with white rice if you get Thai food or bread and processed cheese if you get McDonald's. Pasta or similar dishes add even more carbs. So, I have been eating about 2000-3000 calories a day, two meals a day, but with zero physical activity and no sleep, it’s no wonder I feel awful. Watching TV series and using social media 14 hours a day, mixed with some studies and occasional stretching due to pain, has been my routine. Now, I have all kinds of meat ready to BBQ but zero energy or motivation to get started. This is real life, and I am not pretending to ignore what it is. The narcissistic abuse, gaslighting, isolation, and total abandonment by my family, who are celebrating summer lunch together just 15 minutes away from here without even saying hello to me for over a year, are probably what drains my energy the most. The exclusion is the worst. Sitting in my mom's house, which my sister stole after my mom passed away from cancer, with common friends and kids, pretending I don’t exist, despite always being part of the family and extended family of friends, breaks my heart. My sister is a total psychopath who thrives on others' suffering and exclusion. My nephew, whom I used to pick up after kindergarten every Friday, isn’t allowed to know what’s going on, and my sister makes sure I can’t reach out to him. My sister cheated on her ex, causing her son so much pain that I had to call social services for the child's sake. This set off her vendetta against me. Now, she manipulates everyone against me, making them feel sorry for her. She lives with a new man she was cheating with, making him the new dad and uncle, so my nephew has forgotten about me. So, here I sit every day with a nearly 1000-calorie Greta Thunberg vegan smoothie bowl, feeling sorry for myself. This is crazy! My fingers are inflamed from just typing all these words. I really don’t have anyone to talk to, so once I start, I have a lot to say. Have a good Sunday and thanks for reaching out!

I'm also on a very tight budget and I have executive fonction issues. So what works for me, in addition to keto and intermittent fasting, is having a programmable (second hand) electric cooker so I can let it do the cooking while I do something else without fear of burning or wasting food. I use eggs as my first source of protein because a) they're less expensive and b) they're the best source of protein (and nutrition if they're from pasture raised chicken). I cook them in my electric kettle, using my phone timer and slather them in butter if eaten warm or mayo if eaten cold. I don't hesitate to buy frozen vegetables and already washed lettuce or arugula in plastic bags : they're less expensive and fresher than the ones at the supermarket and they're already washed and cut. I use butter, olive oil, crème fraîche and nuts as my principal source of fats, I'll add tinned sardines or pickled herring when I can afford them (for the omega 3). Sugar, carbs in general and omega 6 are the principal dietary contributors to inflammation. Stress of course is another culprit, and after what you've been through, what you're going through, it must be very high. I found useful information here on RU-vid with dr Sten Ekberg and Jessie Inchauspé (glucose goddess). And I use apps like Yazio to monitor my food intake and eating hours, it makes it like a video game which motivates me. I hope life improves for you. Ditching carbs did a lot for my mental health and energy. Hopefully it may help with yours.

@@NouriaDiallo Thanks a lot! I didn't know about this Glucose Goddess and the app. I'll look it up! Simplifying things is crucial for me right now. That's why I named my RU-vid channel "Simplicity." And took a photo over the too of my city while kind of reflecting why my life went to hell while those in my family that seem to have crawled up from hell live like queens and kings when I am totally excluded from my family… I never been through something like this and my brain cannot cope well with this loss that I can never see my 9 year old nephew again… so yes, a lot of complex grief mixed with chronic pain. I however just made my first carnivore meal. So did something good for myself finally…and not based on ready made food from restaurants and by crazy vegans like Greta Thunberg… I ordered a variety of meats, fat sources, and spices. And now I just grilled a flat steak from a summer sale, which is usually meant for family BBQs. Ah yes, huh, I don't have a family, but with the energy I burn from being sick, I can eat for a whole family for sure! The steak was huge, 2.2 pounds. I cut it in half, grilled it on an old Swedish cast iron pan, and ate it with a lot of sauerkraut. As Andrew Huberman mentioned, sauerkraut benefits the gut and immune system. So, I think I'll be eating mostly meat, sauerkraut, and different mushrooms this coming week and see how it goes! Thanks for sharing your way of doing things, just talking with people that are not out to hurt you is so great right now … I have not seen people in 2 years but a few bad doctors but no friends or family as I we isolated at home and 99% of my friends live either in North America or in Asia… so is a lot on my plate but this steak, to say the least! 🤷🏼‍♂️😤 so thanks a lot! 👍

@alphacause

Fasting, for many people, allows to more easily manage calories. Only someone who is completely deluded would think that fasting has some magical powers that allows it to oxidize more fat than what would be achieved by caloric restriction alone. The simple fact that fasting facilitates caloric restriction makes it effective. I personally find it far easier, when I eat fewer meals, to maintain the caloric intake I need to lose or maintain weight. Frequent eating always tempts me to overconsume calories.

Also, when you do the fasting for a certain amount of hours, your insulin response is better and you become insulin sensitive easier so when looking at overall health, the fasting group should be better off because the blood sugar is not going up all the time.

So yes I fast but fat loss is only part of it. Reduced IR and autophagy or my main reasons. Also the fact that less effort needs to be expended to burn fat is pretty good bonus!!

I think that the biggest issue is the definition of what an actual MEAL is? What is a meal? You can eat a bag of chips and salsa and make it a meal. You can have a frozen dinner and have a meal. You can have large amounts of the right meal and have no damage to any of your stats OR eat a small amount of the wrong material and absolutely destroy every data point you are measuring. Calories are not all the same. Some calories stick to you like super glue, while others heal diseases, repair tissue, shrink size, dump fat, build muscle, improve overall health. The discussion to me isn't to eat or not to eat, but what to eat, when I eat, because we all must eat. So, once again, "what's a meal or what makes the perfect meal?" - that is the question.

I had a very restrictive vegan diet for about 25 years. I ate only twice per day and most days my last meal of the day was before 4pm. No snacking at all. Most days, I would get at least 16-18 hours between my last meal and first. Most of my calories came from beans, rice, nuts, fruits and veggies. All organic. No dairy, no meat for about 25 years with no deviation. My weight just stayed off naturally without hardly any exercise at all. For my height 6ft my natural weight is 172-175 lbs and that is where my weight stayed for all those years. As soon as I started a three meal a day plan, some meals after 4pm and got off a vegan diet, incorporating chicken and dairy, I increased in weight from 172 lb to 235 lb in three years and no matter how long I exercise and try to fast, it does not reduce my weight. I definitely know from experience that going without food daily for about 16-18 hours per day, definitely works in keeping normal natural body weight composition.

Not eating for 24 or 36 hours three times or so a month just makes sense. Your digestive system gets a break, you blood sugar goes down, some autopgagy kicks in, your cells get stressed a bit so they get a work out and mentally you have self control, mentally you have dominated your body. You're physically and mentally stronger. Got to be good for your emotions too.

If you fast 23 hrs and eat 3000 calories in 1 hr you will gain weight. Same if vice versa. It has to do with calorie amounts. Problem with most is they have no self control so they need to imprison themselves into a time window to eat. Also eating at least 3 times a day helps without craving too much or getting hungry then snacking on crap.

Fasting (over the last five years) has given me the flexibility of choosing when to eat. I am NOT beholden to hunger and thus not prone to making bad decisions regarding my eating. As anyone who travels weekly for work will attest, the wrong foods are mostly all one can access when on the road. Thanks to fasting, I can wait for the right food. It's cool when you say, "I'll be home tomorrow. I'll wait to eat then.".

I have seen studies comparing CR with ADF(Alternate day fasting) which was 48 hours fasting with 1 meal. Results? Both lost weight, BUT! The ADF group had 3x more BDNF levels than the CR group, and more importantly, they had a 52% improvement in insulin levels compared to the CR which only had ~20%
