THE #1 QUESTION - Does It Work with Driver?

GOLFTEC ASIA

The number one question on my channel is “does it work with the driver?”.
The “it” that is being referred to is WEIGHT FORWARD, and the answer is emphatically “YES”!
As discussed in my most recent video “THE WRENCH”, people are scared (and often discouraged) from having their weight forward for any of their clubs, but especially the driver. The belief is that weight forward = steep angle of attack and will cause you to hit down to much, inducing a slice and robbing you of distance. This is simply not the case!
Not only does weight forward not = steep, it also makes swinging from in-to-out and hitting a draw EASIER… yes, that’s right, weight forward = draws for days!
So if you’re ready to hit the driver better than you ever imagined possible, get your weight forward, keep it there, and swing your hands around you. Enjoy the bombs! 💣

I decided to try this concept after trying countless theories. I didn’t bother to practice figuring what the hell do I have to lose. I typically shoot around 90. The first par 5 I reached in 2 and made a birdie. On a 369 yard par 4 slight dogleg left my drive might have hit the cart path but landed in the middle of the fairway 36 yards from the front of the green. I usually hit my drives 200 to 225. I ended up shooting 81 after screwing up 2 holes with a double and a triple bogey. The lowest I have ever shot was 79 a handful of times. However at nearly 70 years old it seems you have found me a new power source. If you weren’t half way around the world I would come see you personally. Thank you for the great explanations you give in every video.

Having been a follower of your stack and tilt instruction I had adapted the weight forward concept. Then developed a right leg extending slightly as a swing trigger. This created a pivot around the lead leg as in your compass analogy. I have never hit the ball so well. If weight is not enough forward the start of the swing is difficult to initiate, feeling stuck. Kudos to your ability to communicate complex topics with pertinent drills. Thanks!

Thanks Rob. A very clear, concise explanation of the concept of weight forward. I'm a convert to S&T anyway but sometimes fall back into bad habits. Maybe some drills to reinforce this would be good. Chipping and weight forward I think is a given for most people but technique would be a good one too.

I went to the driving range yesterday and combined this system with one other hip rotating drill and it worked wonderfully. For years I have had trouble transferring my weight and getting the proper hip rotation in my swing. I have gone to pros for lessons but very few would work on my lower body in transferring my weight correctly to help with my hip rotation which was really hindering my swing. I even had one PGA pro tell me I needed to fire my swing off with the left side but missed the important part of telling me how to achieve that. There just seemed to be to many moving parts. This concept has simplified the swing and that concept for me immensely.

Hey Rob, many thanks for your truly excellent and easy to understand ideas on how best to help us learn the S&T system. Now, my question has to do with my severe struggle to rid myself of the dreaded chicken wing at impact and oftentimes the follow through which I didn't really know was my weakness until between you and Nick, who encourage us to video ourselves, led me to look for an app for this very purpose. What I discovered was an app which I'm guessing is best not to mention lest I'm mistaken for a spam merchant, but suffice to say it is currently only available right now on the iPhone and it is very easy to find online. In any event it pretty much analyses a persons swing after a countdown proceeded by a "Swing now" vocal instruction and then the swing is swiftly presented and critiqued back with AI measurements. All very clever. Whilst I think its a very addictive and potentially excellent way to improve my swing in theory, I don't know but wish I did know if this form of practise (particularly when put to the test against your superior equipment) along with the never ending question "could this be an anti S&T app?" is something you guys would encourage or discourage, not to mention your insights into this apps accuracy- which I am simply not qualified to have an opinion on. That said Rob, if this little app is right, then every video of yours and Nicks and Eric Cogorno's on how to keep the left arm straight is simply not working for me on a consistent enough basis and its beginning to drain my confidence because my best just doesn't seem to be enough to stop this chicken wing issue from happening with such horrendous regularity. I can't quite understand what I'm not doing enough of to rectify this problem...

Hey Rob, Still enjoying the videos and the tips seem to be making a difference. I am, however currently plagued a bit by a higher percentage of driver toe strikes than I'd like! Don't get me wrong, they all tend to be fairway finders but obviously I lose a bit of distance by not hitting nearer the sweet spot. I am currently using a 9.5 degree Honma TW 747 driver with a Vizard 65g Stiff shaft. Previously had a 10.5 Ping G400 Max Regular, which was perhaps easier to strike consistently, but ball flight was higher and run out much less than the Honma, hence why I changed. keep up the great work, thanks again, Fraser

Rob, Great video. Because you have asked for our questions, I would like to ask you whether you have a video on how to square club face at impact. I did a test with the GEARS system (in Paris) and it shows that at impact my club face is closed. This seems to be the reason why I am playing straight pulls and sometimes pull-hooks. I understand the latter is mainly related to club path. By the way, I did in Paris a fitting for an EDEL putter. Thanks. Best wishes, Carlos

Hey Rob, I really like your channel and your clear and logical explenations. S&T makes sense for me, but I have One Big Problem with it. No Teacher in my area use this system and it is difficult with the conflicting instructions. Some Teachers say I have a reverse Pivot. And there is my Number 1 Question: How do you fix a reverse Pivot from a Stack and Tilt view? I have looked at my swing on a Slow-Motion video and checked it with the pictures in the official S&T Book. There is a picture with different weight distributions on the upswing and a recommended one. I am more forward than that. I have seen your video "Is Stack&Tilt a reverse Pivot?" and understand, that a reverse Pivot is a weight shift Backwards. I struggle with shifting my hips more forward in the downswing, when the weight is on the front foot in the beginning. All the teachers say that I must feel my weight on the Back-Foot on the Backswing and push from there. And there is the conflict. So Please answer my Number 1 Question: How do you fix a reverse Pivot from a Stack and Tilt view? I am a very logical learner and I must Trust my logical System of the Swing to Swing with confidence. Thank you for your great work and greetings from Germany

Quick question for you Rob. You mentioned towards the end of the video that most people don't play with 100% of the weight fwd. Why do you think most people wouldn't if it works? Why would someone NOT want to keep most, if not all, of the weight fwd throughout the entire golf swing? Did I misunderstand what you were discussing? Appreciate all the great content. Great vid again Rob! I think newer users to SnT get so focused on that downswing for ball first contact it tends to bleed into longer clubs where it’s not needed. I know this from experience. So I try to visualize my shot and how high I’m going to hit, which should be done with all shots. I think of hitting to the high point of an object and I’m naturally hitting up. My question is regarding the hip slide and turn. I feel like I get stuck in cement, again focusing too much on the low point then adding loft back to the face as I have not moved enough. What are some drills or check points to ensure the hip shift occurs & keep moving the hip around? Thanks!

Rob, excellent presentation as usual. Have been working on the S&T for a while and funny I think the two best You Tube teachers are both in Singapore, the other JKM. I have a subtle question: with the driver you state to shift the lead hip forward to create a bit of natural upward tilt at setup and 60% of the weight on the lead foot. For the irons I believe the setup is the body equally centered or "stacked" over the ball with no lead hip move towards the target and of course 60%+/- weight on the lead foot. Am I correct in this read? Appreciate your great teaching vids.

Holy crap, Rob! I tried this wrench drill at the range yesterday. It felt weird at first putting all of my weight forward in setup, but man, I was hitting everything flush, solid and straight with a slight draw. And this was with every club! I am going to try playing my next round in this fashion. My question is, if this method works so well, why go back to placing less than 100% on your front side at set up ever again?
