One myth or people may have about individuals with dismissive avoidant attachment is that they don't desire close relationships or emotional connection with others.
However, this is not true.
They do have a desire for connection and intimacy, just like anyone else.
The difference is that they have learned to cope with this need by suppressing or minimizing it to avoid potential rejection or vulnerability.
Dismissive avoidant attachment develops in response to past experiences of rejection, abandonment, or emotional unavailability. It is not a reflection of a person's true desires or capacity for intimacy.
By understanding this, we can work to dismantle the stigma and misconceptions surrounding dismissive avoidant attachment and provide support and empathy for individuals who may be struggling with these attachment patterns.
Only through empathy, will they learn the benefit of emotional intimacy, and begin to feel more secure.
And while our anxious open hearts are often willing to be supportive, they tend to confuse empathy with self-abandonment. As a result, our avoidant partners wind up feeling double responsible for them, when anxious partners give too much of themselves, in trying to attract them closer.
