The 10 Most Forgotten Amstrad Games!

The Amstrad CPC was my first home computer. I had the Amsoft ten pack that came with £100 worth of free software. It felt like a great time to be alive and I played those Amsoft titles until they refused to load. Later I discovered that you could pretty much walk into any supermarket or retail store and buy additional games. One problem, pocket money was rare back then, so that meant I could look, but not touch. I remember saving up for Outrun on the Amstrad. Took me around 6 weeks, then disaster struck. The game was a complete travesty, a massive Christmas Turkey. That was the day I learned a valuable lesson, don't believe everything you read. That's when I found Amstrad Action, they were trustworthy and I never bought a bad game again. This is about all those game I finally managed to purchase and stick with. Back then I purchased a game and would be stuck with it for for months on end until I could finally afford a new game. I think this allowed me to uncover almost every aspect of a game and learn the majority of its secrets. These are the games I owned and loved, but hardly ever get a mention.
Enjoy!

Wish I'd found Rebelstar back in the day. What a find for £1.99! Not the most appealing cover art so maybe that's why I overlooked it. Flyspy stands out to me as one of the unheard of budget games I took a punt on that turned out to be a bargain.

I know, but that’s happened to me on so many occasions. Fly Spy is a Richard Aplin game, so pretty well known. It gets talked about and covered quite a bit. But that’s now, back in the day I think you might be right. I had it upon first release. Our local news agents used to sell budget Amstrad games. I thought back then it was the best game I’d ever played.

The feeling of awe when you finally fly to the spot in the sky in Mercenary and find a whole new area: amazing! Also: no Quabbalah?!

I don't remember Quabbalah being a pleasant experience.

Quabbalah looked nice, but was really crap. No idea what you were meant to do or how to do it.

Oh God, yeah ! Mercenary ! You really could fly your ship into orbit, then fly back down, get out of your ship, enter building complexes and explore and collect stuff !!! Incredible game ! An open world with flying, vehicles, and on foot exploration - in 1984/5 !!!

Back then I couldn’t believe it. I’d played 3D StarStrike previously, but that was on rails. Obviously Elite did everything, barr landing on a planet 🌎

Great video although I only played a few of them back in the day. Hive looks amazing. It was good to see Starglider: I had it on a pirate copy but no instructions, took my young brain some working out.

Thanks for the visit! Glad you enjoyed it. Starglider was amazing! I still think about it now

@@ClassicReplay you said in the video that something made a big impact on your young brain. I often wonder how much my Amstrad days have impacted me. I got a 6128 on my 8th birthday along with a load of pirated games, no instructions just left to work them out. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy adventure game was one of them. My dad bought me the book to help me play the game. I’m sure all of it taught some positive lessons. I still think about a lot of the games too.

If you had a 6128 at eight that would have been amazing. There’s lots of great games on the Amstrad. That computer is the reason I now work in IT, I’m convinced of it.

Ah, Space Crusade. We played the board game first and it was so cool to play the game on the CPC with my best friend. - I did not know Guardian II. So is it any better than Defend or Die?

Space Crusade was the Playable Demo in AA at the end of 1991. That was the first AA issue I bought - 6 months before I got a Mega Drive! I love the hidden gems videos - the recommendations are perfect - games that I may have never found. I was looking for a decent port of Defender, just a few weeks ago when I had my 6128+ out. I'll get Guardian II onto my SD card and check it out. I'm making a folder with all of the top retro Arcade ports on there, and there are loads of them.

Brilliant! Mission accomplished 👍 that’s funny to hear you bought a copy of ‘AA’ in 1991. But yes, great times. ‘AA’ lost its way shortly after. But surprisingly went on well into the early 90s. Try a game called either Commando Tracer, or the same game under a different title the Last Commando. It’s absolutely brilliant and feels like Defender, but with its own spin.

@@ClassicReplay I don't think _Amstrad Action_ lost its way shortly after 1992 - especially if you compare it to its competitors at the time, _Amstrad Computer User_ and _CPC Attack!_ By the end of 1992, _AA_ was the only CPC magazine around, so you didn't really have any choice if you were a CPC owner.
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay Год назад
True about CPC Attack. But I meant compared to how it read when Rod Lawton was at the helm. Also, when compared to competitor magazines for other systems e.g. C64 and ZX Spectrum. I have every copy, towards the end they were printing it using what felt like cheap Lidl bog roll... it was so thin. I will always miss 'AA' especially in its heyday.

@@ClassicReplay Yeah, it's a game by Christian Urquhart, so those who recognize the name, know that he made (mostly) quality software! Playability is the key, so, so nice game!

You have to learn what to do. The only way to do that is to read the manual, something lots of people never do. You basically have to shut down the central reactor, which is hundreds of miles away in a different city, but a series of jump pads enable you to travel huge distances. But to get there requires skill. One of the best games ever!
