Ever heard of the MonoCar? In 2022 we visited Solent Sky, a (mainly) aviation museum located in Southampton which contains a multitude of unique gems - where else would you find the unique Avro MonoCar for example, sharing space with a Spitfire F24, the Schneider Trophy Supermarine S.6A, the jet-powered Saunders-Roe SR.A/1 flying boat, and a magnificent Short Sandringham flying boat, to name just a few?
Sir Alliot Verdon Roe - of the Avro aircraft company - designed and built the Avro MonoCar in 1926 for his own use, to commute between his factories in Manchester and Hamble on the south coast. He covered around 30,000 miles in this compact car/motorcycle, and amazingly it survives to this day at Solent Sky. In looks it reminds me in some ways of a contemporary Morgan three-wheeler (although the MonoCar makes do with just two), the body is made from aluminium, and propulsion is courtesy of a two-stroke, 250cc, Villiers engine.
It was a real treat to see the S.6A, and clambering on board the mighty Short Sandringham gave real clues as to what it must have been like, flying in these wonderful machines, in the days before the cattle-class experience that is so prevalent today.
If you find yourself in the Southampton area, it's well worth calling in and paying a visit to Solent Sky, if we find outself nearby again we'll definitely darken its doorways once more.

I remember see the Ansette flying boat at Rose Bay in the early sixties. Dad would drive us there, we would have a picnic watch them take off. Great old days. Ansette long gone.

Visited this museum around 1986, a couple of years after it opened. Drove down to Southampton from Leicester in my ‘75 4 door Mimosa Yellow Toledo.

The Calshot Light ship had a number of moves the last being about 12 years ago when it moved to its current resting place. They had to stop the traffic and it just so happened that my Brother-in-law had a meeting in the city that day, he was not best pleased! Talking of Calshot I have a DVD made by a local Gent on the restoration of the last Sunderland which took place not far from the castle. I knew a chap who helped on the project. I no longer live in the city but would recommend a visit to the museum. Thanks Rick. 👍👍

I went, a few years ago, and they let me climb the steep ladder and sit in the pilots seat of the Shorts Sunderland, I felt very privileged. You can still see the launching slipway from what was the front of the Shorts factory if, like me you live in the Medway towns.

That was a nice video of the museum. You mentioned at the beginning the Jetex. I remember tying one to my Corgi Bluebird. It shot off down the garden path at a fair old rate of knots. The thing I remember mostly though was the smell of the spent fuel. Great memories.

There is something so majestic about Flying Boats. My favourite would have to be the Catalina.

What museum would have emerged from building it around the Princess Flying Boat we can only ponder. Big though. The front nasals on the Harrier blow only compressed air, shows the power of the compressors.

I like your videos. Especially when you call a light ship a "lighthouse boat or whatever". I had a Jetex motor and made several Kiel Kraft kits including 2 Gypsies. And a Frog Goblin. Today's little darlings don't have the necessary combination of skill, patience and commitment to make - that is construct, model aeroplanes from balsa and tissue. It's all smartphones and broken-knee jeans. I feel sorry for them. Of course you were right about the Elizabethan class being Airspeed Ambassadors - with two Bristol Centaurus. A fairly quiet plane actually, and of pleasing lines. What a nice video. Incidentally, look up the name Halford in respect of De Havilland jet motors. The Vampires had them! Vampires with Halford's engines! Best wishes for 2023.

I suppose there are so many more ways to pass the time now compared to days gone by, but yes attention spans aren't what they used to be!!! :-) Thanks for watching.

MOTAT in Auckland, New Zealand. Has examples of both restored Shorts Sunderland flying boat that served with RNZAF until 1960's & Shorts Solent IV from TEAL ( now Air NZ) that flew the " Coral Route" in the Pacifc up until 1960' - That Sandringham was originally a TEAL aircraft replaced by the solent's in early 50's. Think that was the last air worthy flying boat left, there was a Sunderland ( ex RNZAF) in the US think that has been retired too - ironic both being the last of their kind have a connection to little NZ aviation at the bottom of the world

Quite a long history of flying boats in New Zealand - mainly in the 1930s and 1940s - flying the trans-Tasman route between Auckland and Sydney and to the Pacific islands. I think almost all of them were from the Short Bros, including the Sandringham. The NZAF used the De Havilland Vampire jets in a fighter/ground attack role in the 50s and 60s. There is also a very good Air Force Museum at Wigram, just on the outskirts of Christchurch, NZ. Certainly plenty to see at the Solent Sky museum - thanks for the quickie tour.

I think it's significant how back then when the Avro Monocar was created - the design was dominated by function with almost zero attention to form or style. Cars hadn't become "streamlined" in the 1920s though the Italians had hinted at aerodynamics with early Alfa vehicles pre 1920. But heavens! that Monocar looks more like a motorcycle fitted inside a chemical toilet booth! Pardon my coarseness there. Style and fashion in its infancy.

The music has to go !! Also, if you're going to focus on the information boards for the exhibits, please remain on them to allow for time to read them...otherwise good job.

Sorry if I didn't hover on the info boards for enough time, I try to show them long enough that anyone watching can pause the vid to read them. It wouldn't be realistic to stand looking at each board long enough to allow anyone watching sufficient time to read everything without pausing. Thanks for watching.
