Every Japanese automaker must have got a deal on black cladding because every new car from them has it.

@Paul S Yet it looks horrific and is perceived as cheap. They do do it for that reason though, cheaper to make (most importantly for them) and cheaper to replace.

@Paul S Good point. Although "cheaper" comes with "cheap" and seriously? This just looks like a piece of crap. Unacceptable from Subaru IMO. But let's not worry a lot about it, people will buy it in large amounts. After all, it's electric, right? So it's gonna save the planet 👍

In ten years that black cladding will be light grey like every Honda Element or Chevy Avalanche out there. But who cares, by that time it will need a new battery that costs more than the vehicle is worth.

People that like electric cars are heavily status-conscious. Not only do they need everyone to know they're driving an EV, they need to be reminded of it every time they get in. It's just like when hybrids started getting big. Fewer people bought the hybrids that looked like regular cars-they wanted the Prius with the distinctive "hybrid look".

In the 1980's, Porsche solved the steering wheel adjustment issue with the top of it obscuring the gauge cluster of the 928 by simply integrating the gauge binnacle unit WITH the top shroud of the steering column - as you adjusted the steering wheel position to suit your seating preference, the gauges moved with it & remained perfectly positioned & visible through the spokes & rim of the steering wheel.

I was a Subaru service writer for 5 years, I literally quit because of the customers either not knowing anything about the car (thank you subaru sales guys for us having to re-educate after a 100 miles of people owning their cars because you don't talk about anything that has to do with the car), or because people refused to adapt to new tech and it was so frustrating. If you've ever been a subaru service advisor for any amount of time you know exactly what I'm talking about. Subaru owners are just a unique type of people, special people. Watching this and seeing all the new stuff, man my thoughts and prayers go out to all those future Subaru service writers. Glad I got out when I did.

I wouldn’t sweat it. Your typical subaru buyer is gonna take one look at this thing and go, “oh hell no.” They didn’t even include a shifter ffs. First thing you do on a test drive and you already hate it. Brilliant. They’ll sell these, but it won’t be to existing customers.

Run away from 2023 Subaru Solterra! I’m experiencing serious issues with 2023 Subaru Solterra electric vehicle. This EV is performing poorly and charging slowly. Cold weather causes about 50% 2023 Subaru Solterra reduction in range. Driving 2023 Subaru Solterra on snow can be dangerous. This vehicle is designed for the Japanese market. 2023 Subaru Solterra is not equipped to handle Michigan winter driving conditions. I could honestly live with 220miles in a daily driver, I think the largest issue would be attempting to use this as a member of it's target demographic. While chargers are being installed in state parks around here they often aren't near the interesting trails or sights you'd want to see. Sometimes they aren't near the campgrounds either. So with only 220 miles of range, once you factor in carrying you, your friends/family and your gear... Potentially using roof mounted cargo solutions for gear/bikes/kayaks wich would further reduce range and any inevitable rough road driving cutting into that range it starts to become a huge con. It's a shame because I generally like Subarus, my wife's Forester was a perfect weeklong camping trip vehicle for us when she had it, had great milage and enough capability that some of the less maintained "roads" deeper in the mountains where not a problem. So hopefully they take this criticism and improve on the design because I want to like it.
@williamauyeung2968
@williamauyeung2968 2 года назад
Exactly. Especially going into the woods, how tf do you find a ev charger?! With that kind of range, I won’t even able to get off that trail and find a charger. For EV off-roading, the car at least have 350+ miles range then we can start talking. For regular gas-powered car, we can just bring couple gas jars and it will be good. For EV, you can’t bring a charging station with you

One of the quirks that the bZ4x has that Doug didn't mention is that the glove box has been replaced by infrared leg warmers and the working for the heat pump. There is storage underneath the centre console. The 0 to 62 time is 6.5 seconds. There are plenty of reviews by other motor journalist on You Tube, on the BZ4X as it is the same vehicle.
@gvaley
@gvaley 2 года назад
That doesn't explain how Tesla has a heat pump, glovebox, generous central console storage space, more powerful motors, faster charging, faster performance (which requires bigger radiators under the hood), slightly bigger battery, WAY more boot space, and on top of that - space for a frunk. Where did you waste all that space, Toyobaru?
@MrPeteJMc
@MrPeteJMc 2 года назад
@@gvaley Tesla are on a different price point. Toyota build quality is far better than Tesla. Also Toyota and Subaru guarantee their batteries that they only loose 10% efficiency after 10 years. This is due to slower charging speeds. Regular fast charging degrades battery life.
@gvaley
@gvaley 2 года назад
@@MrPeteJMc Of course Toyobaru will be cheaper - who will buy a vastly unsuperior car otherwise? But the price means nothing because you won't be able to buy it. I'd truly like to see that governments will respect automobiles and consumers who like beautiful engineering by showing a true form of : "drive whatever you like!" Have you noticed that already 2 years ago, car commercials literally stopped advertising anything that isn't related to electric power?! Let people do whatever they want. I honestly couldn't care less about others choices. I won't save the world with cars since the root of world pollution lies somewhere else (but that is another debate) but I would most kindly appreciate to be given a choice of driving whatever kind of car I just please until the last day of my life. Do you think it is too much to ask for? Because given the "ecological propaganda" and the increasingly more demanding emissions regulations, it means we'll never see new pure V12s (Aventador) or V10s (Viper) or others, ever. What Toyota/Subaru seem to have done here feels like a poor implementation of that idea, especially since the cluster screen itself also looks pretty poor. Maybe Subaru drivers are different, but my personal feel when I saw the POV shot of the wheel and dash here was that it doesn't feel like a nice place to be, and that's from someone who owns and loves a vehicle with the i-cockpit!

I currently own both a Subaru Forester and another EV brand. Good review Doug, but I don’t see one thing about this car that would convince me to purchase a Solterra over the similar EV competition. Subaru may be marketing this like other Subarus, but the reality of this car is that it’s meant for city driving. I don’t picture myself taking this car for adventuring when range and charging speed are vastly inferior to the competition. Maybe I’d consider if it’s a lot cheaper and I don’t need extra driving range, fast charging, a really good infotainment, or a glovebox (I.e. Again, this is the description of a pure city car….lol).

I agree, was expecting this to be a cheaper off-road ev besides the Rivians but the range and charge time is not good at all. Imo if they can make the range at least 270-300 miles then it might get a shot

Not quite a city car either, the vast majority of Subaru’s demographic is people in rural areas that have winter. Those that have to drive dirt roads, or through some heavy snow often. It’s a small demographic compared to other manufacturers, sure, but that’s their thing. Heated seats & steering wheel, heated wiper blades, standard full-time symmetrical AWD on all models except their “sports car”. It’s an EV for people that have to deal with winter and dirt roads. Not saying it’s great, but I wouldn’t call it a city car.

100% agree. I've had two Subaru Foresters (2015 and 2019, my current daily driver). I ended up ordering a Mustang Mach-E Premium AWD ER last November (still don't even have a production date!), but when I heard about this, I wondered if I should cancel that order. This should have been a slam dunk for me, but it's just so underwhelming. I would absolutely forget my phone in that cubby all the time. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea. I also don't understand a vehicle that is designed for off-road adventuring that has so little range, but more importantly, such slow charging speed. I think their partnership with Toyota really held them back here.

Doug score for Practicality is a little high IMO. Deductions for Range, Charging speed, no Frunk. Additional points for ground clearance. This looks like it has a little less cargo room in the back, because of the inward slope to accommodate the tail light shelf.. But at the end of the day, it IS called the Doug score! :) Glad to see this review, great work.

I know a lotta people don’t like it when Doug does a sponsor deal but have you noticed, every time he’s ever had someone sponsor a video, it’s something he’s into. Once it was like an expensive car financing company, today he did a car show on Discovery+, at least he only shills for shit he actually believes in or thinks we’ll like

Doug talks a lot about how customers expect their crossovers to get to 60 in ~4 s but I don't think that's the average consumer. If you stack this up next to the Outback it's comparable to the most powerful wilderness model regarding acceleration, off-roading geometry figures, and even the interior space. In the end Subaru customers want something practical and confidence inspiring, and I think that's what this is. (although I do agree that a larger battery option would be nice) - Impreza owner

Spot on about the charge time and range issues. I've been waiting for a crossover with some of the basic adventure features lacking in all other models - namely a bit of reasonable ground clearance and an option to put a roof rack on when needed for adventure gear or the occasional run to the hardware store. Another understated feature that's important is being able to "hide" your mobile phone under a cover. Most other EV makers force you to have it out in the open to charge or be usable. Where I live there are major fines for having your mobile phone visible anywhere, using it or not. Add a back wiper and solve the range/charging issues and they have a winner. Until then... limited appeal. Knowing them, Toyota and Subaru will probably decide that no one wants an "adventure EV" because of this and make all of their future ones car-like, LOL.

They need to make a wagon with high clearance and with a roof rack that isn't 7ft off the ground. Like the old AMC Eagle wagon. Those were badass.

I don't actually mind the wheel arch cladding on the new WRX too much, it can be painted body color to match and look acceptable. The real issue for me is the rear bumper that looks like a full diaper, you can't fix that with just paint.
