I really feel Bigx and mexican are going to take over in the next few years. A lot of dope people on this cover overall tho. So excited to see what everybody does with this opportunity. I also think you really outlined something in this video that i think is a real shame. There is really no outlets other then genius and xxl that really gives new artists a platform. MTV has really went bust imo and thats such a shame. Its no longer music television. Its just reality television and rob dyrdeks ridiculousness. Wish they would get back to the music. Feels like they've kind of left it behind. Anyway, great vid as always, man.
It’s so dope to see you doing an episode on this. I still have all of those XXL and Scratch magazine issues in great condition. As an artist and fan myself, I’ve collected every issue of The Source, XXL, VIBE, Scratch, and even BLAZE magazine from 1998 to around 2014 when I stopped collecting. Lol. The 2010 XXL issue is the Hip Hop equivalent to the 2003 NBA Draft imo. Even having Drake & Nicki on the cover the month right after was dope for that year. Shoutout to the 2008 issue tho. Such a special cover.
Loved learning about, I know the issue is for me in recent years is that it seems they’ve boxed out the lyricists. Unless he’s turned it down, an artist Kenny Mason should’ve been on a list like this for the past couple of years. What is the point of having cyphers and freestyles if you’re completely pivoting away from the types of artists that thrive in those environments. I’m not saying it needs to be all lyricists but I feel like the older covers did a good job of mixing styles while these newer ones have completely shied away from the lyricists.
Yeah, i feel you im a lyricist guy! I love people who emphasize the lyrical part of their art. But i also feel the fans don’t support those type of artists like they used to. Great video, and I'm definitely lookint forward to hearing your thoughts about the MTV News closure/the shrinking media industry (if that would be accurate to say.) I imagine the timing was entirely what kept Tommy Richman out of this roster, because I don't think 4Batz would be classified as a rapper either. Plus we've had Anderson Paak, Ty Dolla $ign and other artists that sing primarily make the cut too.
This issue is not credible, there is not one California artist on that cover. Clearly we saw at Kendrick concert there is great talent in California. If the magazine is located in NY it would explain everything. NY has a bias against the West Coast and it was telling with Kendrick dissing Drake. The media out of NY was moving strange. Almost all of them supported Drake, weird.
Naaaaah. I guarantee you NY as a whole has anything against Kendrick or the west coast. You can be disappointed that there isn’t a west coast artist on the cover, but that narrative is dangerous. NY has always supported Kendrick - i was part of the staff when he was on the cover. The year before that jay rock and Nip were on the cover. These are just facts
