Grew up in Winston-Salem. I remember him at Alabama and Virginia. When he came to WSSU I was shocked. Glad to see how his life turned out. Thanks Matt!
I attended Winston-Salem State back in this time. He was a pretty good QB for us, and for more context we were a bit of D2 powerhouse, and definitely the best hbcu football program back in those days. In 2012 we made it to the D2 championship game and got smoked by Valdosta state. We had quite a few D1 transfers back between 2010-2014 due to the success on the field and how fun the school was off the field, lots of beautiful women. Thanks for sharing, brought back great memories, and I’m glad Sims is doing well.
We as fans get caught up in the hype and sometimes forget that most of these players are kids and as kids make choices that best for them at that time. Life is hard and like you said you have to grind and grind some more!
I played against Phillip Simms in HS qnd remembered him going to Alabama then Virginia then WSSU. At least he was humble, aware and grateful for his situation that something you can't say about most football players nowadays (college or NFL).
I smoked a few blunts with him at some Alabama parties when we both attended the university. He had this air about him that screamed homesick, you know? In social settings, he just simply didn't seem like he fit in. People forget we were just kids back then. I spoke to him cause i noticed him at a party, a common occurrence for ball players. But you never saw ball players at the white frats cause Tuscaloosa super racist and the fans love black people when we are on the field, but not socially. So black players were routinely at the black frats cause that's the only place to party that accepted everyone regardless of skin color(yes, this was just a little over a decade ago, go figure) . Anyways, he was standing alone, not in the same atire us southerners were in. I follow football and wanted to walk on, even roomed with some ball players so i knew of him, but he whipped out a blunt so quick and lit it, passed it and we barely ever spoke, he was really really quiet. We got along cause I was born in Germany and lived in Japan long before the USA and felt the same culture shock of being in the deep south as him. Good man, I just needed to be round his people. Much love for spotlighting the old homie.
matt once again another great vid I recommend you do eithier Harrison Bailey (Former 5 Star QB Tennessee) or Jaheel Billingsleey (Former 5 Star TE Bama)
I’m glad you finished it with some positivity because I can’t let you disrespect Phil. I played with Phil at WSSU, first of all put some respect on our name. Phil wasn’t the only former Bama player in our roster that season, and they weren’t the only power 5/ group 5 players on the roster. We were only 2 years removed from D1. Our coaches were great and we were coming off a National Championship game run. Was projected to be back and had Phil not been ineligible that season. We would have easily run the table. At least nine or more players from that team alone sign some form of contract to play either in NFL/CFL. All 32 NFL teams sent scout to our practice at least weekly. So Phil choosing WSSU at the time was no brianer we was the hottest them in D2 football at the time. Them NFL scouts followed him. He was a great guy and leader for us. I have nothing but respect for Phil, but don’t disrespect my school like that..
Played with Phil at Winston easily the best QB at winston he was that GUY. Arm talent and unfortunately life and some bad decisions hurt him but he was that guy and is even a greater man he easily would have made it with the Seahawks and cards if not for injuries . S/O for making this video he deserves the love . Couple other guys who went to Winston who deserve the love . D2 is better than nothing ppl shouldn’t disrespect it look at Josh Williams from Fayetteville state . He actually was the starter over AJ until some bs happened
Played against him in High School and kept up with him since I was a Bama Fan. I was super surprised after he left Bama to go to UVA and eventually all that happened in his career. He was a pure dawg on the field. I'm happy to see everything is going well for him tho and he's still around the game.
I watched his career since high school and when he transferred to UVA I was like they got a stud and same when he came to WSSU. Thanks Matt for covering these guys I watched through my late teens and early 20s
He had a higher purpose as a 49er fan I respect him immensely and think of all the RB the team drafted to try and replace Frank Gore which likely cost them a SB if they would of used that draft capital better
I remember him I kept up with his college an highschool career I was pulling for him over aj mccaron he was the first high school recruit I followed thru highschool
Also RTR huge W over UF there’s so many good teams in the SEC that it’s up for grabs I’m from KY and that LSU game was wildly sad and hilarious they had no business losing to a bottom feeder in LSU😂
Terrence Cody started the dynasty if he didn’t block those kicks in 09 we wouldn’t have went to the natty. I remember that game. And I’m sooo glad they didn’t throw the flag when he took his helmet off after blocking that last one. But on some forealness if colt didn’t get hurt in that game Texas would have whooped our ass Roll tide till the day I die
@@BuuSaysRollMfnTide1991 Yessir That was at the rose bowl in cali and Nicks first title. And that’s when the games were played on a Thursday night rather than Monday night. Monday night sucks ass. I think they should do it on a Friday or Saturday night!
Virginia is no joke academically. Very selective on admissions. They are a public university but near Ivy League in many respects. UVA won’t let athletes major in underwater basket weaving.
I from Winston Salem I definitely remember him transferring to wssu. He spit time with another quarterback on wssu roster. He was the better passer at wssu
You should do the story of Sabans first big time QB signee that never saw the field....one Star Javkson. He's gonna be one hell of a trivia question one day lol
I remember Sims well Milroe kinda reminds me of Sims tbh.. he had 1 good season at Alabama that i don't think matt touched up on.. he was a backup one year but I'm pretty sure he started for a whole year too
Actually I'm sorry I'm getting Phillip & Blake Sims confused with each other I'm pretty sure lol they have the same last name so it's easy to confuse them with each other lol
Not a FSU fan or a hater either way but I definitely know who Peter Warrick was but had forgotten about him till you mentioned the name. It would be an interesting video to learn about his journey and how it turned out.
Matt, if you see this please consider doing a piece on Dallas back up Cooper Rush. For the life of me I cannot figure out why he can't get a chance from another team looking for very good qb. 6 years in Dallas and when Dak went down two years ago Cooper went 4 and 1 losing only to SFran.
Also if you look at the stats with the cards he was battling with colt mccoy for that 3rd string spot unfortunately at the last games in the preseason and in the cfl he had shoulder injuries in the last game I believe in the cards game he threw like 3 TDs and balled
I WANT TO SEE THE 3 STAR RECRUITS THAT BECOME SUPERSTAR PLAYERS IN COLLEGE that are missed constantly by recruiting ranking services yet they have film 🎥 but to them it doesn't matter do to pushing for popularity ☘️
The problem with many guys is they go to Alabama. Go somewhere where you can play like Pennix. I get that iron vs iron bull they sell to recruits but why would you want to be QB3 at Bama instead of QB1 at Pitt or Louisville?
If you could actually give some info on Star Jackson that would be cool. I remember when he was supposed to be a huge deal and he never started then went to Georgia State and didn't even start there. Then, he completely disappeared from the public it seems. No social media. No info on him. I've been wondering about him for a while.
It happened all the time before the transfer portal. Randy Moss and Cam Newton went from D1 to D2 and a junior college respectively . This doesn't know college for ball...
Saskatchewan...... say it with me. SAS CATCH U WAN . Some say SAS CATCH E WAN. I love the way you mispronounce sometimes. Its very entertaining , like all your content. Keep it up!!
4-Star on Rivals. Seem like bad advice. Dont think he was ever going to start. McElroy was hurt going into the national championship. Saban said himself if he couldn’t play, he would pull the redshirt off AJ. So how was Sims going to start over a guy Saban was wiling to play in the national championship game as a true freshman? Sims should’ve gone where he was gonna be guaranteed to start.
Yup so many guys go to these stacked college teams and say I'm gonna play the waiting game and chill until my time comes and unfortunately they just get lost in the shuffle and don't get me wrong sometimes the waiting game can definitely be the right move but I am always of the mindset if possible go somewhere where your gonna get your chance as soon as possible
this guy was a terrible coach at jr tucker. the most games he ever won in a season was 4.. went 2-8 his two other seasons. I had no idea he was the #1 qb in HS at one point tho... sad he didn't hit his potential as a player. glad he's finding his lane coaching though. wish him the best
