Yo Adam, what's your opinion on Red Tailed Boas, not BCIs like Franny, I'm talking about BCC True Red Tailed Boas. In my opinion, they're amazing and underrated snakes that deserve the numbers of BCIs and not to have five pages on Morph market, all going for 500-700 bucks with practically no morphs (not that it matters, as the wild type BCC is better looking than most BCI morphs in my opinion) While breeding difficulties manage to play a role, there are people like Brian's Boas who manage to pump out True Red Tails. The bigger reason is misinformation. Boas as a whole have their size often drastically overexaggerated in various corners of the internet, but none have been more effected than BCCs. There are experienced reptile keepers who have decades in the hobby that still think that all True Red Tails reach 10, 12, 14 feet when that's simply not true, most BCCs don't get much bigger, if not stay the same size as any old Common Boa. Because of that, BCC True Red Tails simply aren't in high demand, so they have more of a cult following than a mass following like BCIs. I surely do wish Brian's Boas wasn't the only guy on RU-vid to get good info on BCC Boa size, temperament, and care requirements, as not even massive channels like Snake Discovery or Brian Barczyk really cover them. BCC True Red tailed boas need more love. While BCIs, which are commonly recommended as intermediate snakes would make great beginner snakes in my opinion, True Red Tails are definitely intermediate snakes due to their weak digestive systems. You just can not overfeed them, especially as babies which is the most common age people feed them too frequently, and it's important to get their husbandry as close to perfect as possible during that 1-3 day digestion period. While a BCI can be pulled off as an amazing first snake, a BCC is really something that you need experience with something like a corn snake or a milk snake before you should adopt one. After that, they're beautiful, docile, and amazing pet snakes that I'd recommend to anyone that already has their Garter Snake or their Ball Python and is ready to move up to something more advanced. I hope you can see my point of view, and it would be amazing to see a video on them if you'd like to make one. Have an amazing time of your life.
I've heard they're the orange cats of lizards. I've seen so many pictures of Cresties wearing their dinner as a hat. I'm just like, "I see we've been taking plays out of the Orca fashion book huh?" LOL
You asked why we watch.... you present pets we can keep in a super down to earth way. You mispronounce stuff, can't remember super technical stuff, and recommend great pets that I'd never know about otherwise. THEN you come out with awesome care vids that us plebs can totally follow and understand. You're not pretentious about it either. Very personable. Love it.
Just got a crested gecko and he’s awesome! I keep in a 60 gallon bio active. He lives with a House gecko but I didn’t mean for him to. It was more a rescue kinda thing. Because when we bought his enclosure a house gecko was inside the packaging and the reptile store was an hour and a half away so we just put him in the crested geckos tank and he’s doing just fine. In fact sometimes I see the house gecko and the crestie next to eachother
it's kinda nice when unexpected buddies happen. I had that happen with an unlikely duo of fish who happily coexisted in my 12 gallon tank. It started with a rasbora who systematically starved & then proceeded to chomp in schooling mates, despite being a schooling fish. I got so mad, I put him in with my beta. They lived happily ever after for the next 2.5 years LOL alongside Speedy the snail.
I had a flying gecko as a teenager(this was in the 90's), he was likely wild caught and lived for about 8 years in a planted terrarium. He was probably one of my favorite reptiles ever, the way he hunted crickets was astounding, like a tiny mountain lion. Probably a big part of why I ended up becoming a biologist. I would just like to say, there is nothing wrong with keeping species that you never intend to handle, for some species handling just stresses the animal out or allows for a situation where a delicate species could be hurt.
I remember one day when I came home from an expo I brought some snakes, couple frogs and only 3 morning geckos for 20 gallon. The day I put them in 1 of them found a hole and got out. Now this expo was about 6 months ago and 3 weeks ago I found here in one of my plants.
I don't own any geckos but I love Electric blue day geckos! I was tempted to buy chameleon geckos didn't go threw. You should do another "Top 5 best skinks."
Totally agree with you on #5. I tried to keep a wild caught one. He refused to eat, so I released it the next day. My absolute fav gecko is the gargoyle geckos. My cresties are nice, but not a great as my gargs! Leches are awesome, but I don't have one because of the price.
I can see the appeal of Flying Geckoes since their baggy 'parachutes" give them an odd look even without the gliding but them being so hard to find Captive Breed is a big deal breaker if your not planning on Breeding them yourself. Beyond that I can't get enough of the Scorpion Tail Gecko. Unique look and a small size (not much bigger then a Dune or Viper Gecko), easy to take care of and hardy, yet not all that flighty.
I feel that a tokay is a monitor lizard inside a gecko so smaller enclosure and with time they can be tamed, also you don't lose fingers when you get slammed by it.
Great vlog today and some pretty geckos. Hey nice glasses? I hope you have an awesome day and if you are going to animal con safe travels and have a blast
I actually got into geckos when I found two house gecko eggs in a potted plant I bought (took forever to identify them, not many people know house geckos in my state, little guys were shipped from Florida). One, Humpty, didn't make it (hatched a full week earlier than their sibling with an unabsorbed yolk, refused food for the first three weeks of life, couldn't complete sheds despite adequate humidity and electrolyte soaks) but Bugsy is still going strong at 9-10 months and is a tiny tank. Got out twice, survived 5 hours then 11 days loose in my house, but by some miracle, I was able to find and catch him and escape proof the tank (he could wiggle out the slits from the closed wire slats in an exoterra lid). Still, Humpty and Bugsy got me into geckos. But I wanted a gecko I could handle and one I would actually see (I only know Bugsy is there from poops and eaten insects lol, I haven't seen more than a tail for three months) so now I have a gargoyle gecko, Clever Girl, who thinks I'm scarier than the devil.
I've owned Western Banded geckos (I'm currently at 12) for about 10 years. Even my wild-caught pair is not skittish. My original gecko, Mia, used to even climb to the highest point in the enclosure to be picked up during feeding time, and she wouldn't eat until we held her. When we found her a mate, though, she stopped being as clingy to us 😂 Their 6 adult/sub-adult offspring weren't hand-tamed, but they will still chill or adventurously roam our hands if we pick them up. WB geckos are chill by nature. If you pick one up in the wild, they just sit in your hand. And they never bite unless they mistake your finger for food and are super hungry (not that it would hurt). Mia has gifted us with at least 20 babies in the roughly 10 years we've had her. So it's not impossible to find someone with captive bred & born Western Banded geckos. I see it as ridiculous to call them a bad pet merely because they're hard to find. Additionally, the reason it's hard to find CBB ones is because the states in which they're native have outlawed selling them. And I'm pretty sure they put limits on the number of them that you can own, which further discourages captive breeding projects. All in all, Western Banded Geckos should not even be on this list. They're smart, great at hunting and eating, often sociable (a recent hatchling loves being picked up and does what Mia used to do), and they're just downright adorable mini leopard geckos.
Another alternative would be Viper Geckos! I have many of them and they are great little geckos. I love watching them hunt. They will actually chase down their prey all around the enclosure! :) I also just adopted an adult Frog Eyed gecko. I know she's a "look don't touch" reptile and I'm ok with that. Great video!
WTF. You put 2 of my favorite animals I work with on the bad list. Flying geckos and tokays are so underrated. They don't come out to greet me like my Leo's and day gecko but still amazing. Flying geckos are also pretty vocal and make some cool noises and will bark at you like a tokay if you make it mad while cleaning the enclosure but nowhere near the bite force lol. Hard to find a more rewarding gecko than a tokay. Taming one is definitely an achievement and takes work and a little blood.
Ikr!! Flying geckos are so cool. I feel that people often view a species with their namesake in mind and solely focus on that part of it, which totally makes sense of course but I personally love flying geckos for their fern like tails and just that overall look in general, kinda like a gecko in a gillie suit lol. Have you seen how they can fire up and down and seemingly kinda side to side regarding how many different colors they have shown in your time working with them? Plus with the growing trend of bigger enclosures I don’t see why or how flying geckos wouldn’t be a good candidate in this chapter of herpetoculture. I would have had that one flipped the other way around 😂 They are definitely delicate and I would still agree that a crested gecko would be better for a beginner keeper but c’mon!
When you said the better option for a house gecko was a lot more colorful I was excited for the possibility that you were going to highlight neon day geckos then I was sad when it was chameleon geckos, although chameleon geckos are kinda cool too, I guess. :P
I've never chosen the path easiest to follow in the reptile world... I like burms and retics more than ball pythons, I like tokay geckos more than any other more docile counterpart, and given the choice between a tegu an iguana or a monitor I would greatly prefer the monitor. Not like I'm setting out to be difficult to be unique or just going for goliaths, those are just what still drop my jaw at 22 having been obsessed with learning every single thing possible about reptiles since the age of 8
I totally agree Tokay geckos are a big No. My actual 1 No gecko is the Striped gecko. They are insanely busy. Leap great distances across the tank. Will fly at you and on you and try to escape every time you open the enclosure door. The males are extremely aggressive and mine killed my female. I would actually put them at the #1 top gecko to Not own. I have owned many species of geckos; Crested, Striped, Mourning, Tokay. Tokay geckos can be extremely territorial. I purchased one and she was so territorial that I didn't put food in the cage unless she was back behind her tree log. If she was up front heck no. She would snap and sway. It made me sad because she was so gorgeous. I was also breeding Chameleons at the time. Our female was above and beyond egg layer. She laid over 320 eggs. This was from only 2-3 visits with her bf. I was so busy with all the babies that there was no way I had time to deservingly give to the Tokay.
In my country (Russia) we have no problem with breeded C.mitratus banded geckos, so I have a pair of them. Sure, they are very shy and not handeable. I also got the termit hill geckos Hemidactylus triedrus, which are super fast, but they are interesting in behaviour and easy to breed, I really like this species. As an alternative for them I strongly reccomend the viper geckos for beginners, because they are much more like a mini-version of leopard geckos. P.S. My tokay female is a true beast😅 Thanks for video, Adam!
Comical, yet predictable that my favourite species of gecko gets put as the #1 worst pet gecko on this list! 😂🤣 I love the way Tokay geckos look. 🤩 They are the most beautiful gecko in existence.🦎💎
I actually had a flying gecko and for awhile I was only able to catch him out at like 1 or 2 in the morning, but eventually it did start coming out at around 8:00 or 9:00 at night and would be out and about all night, I’d definitely get another one and they’re rather unique little gecko and would definitely recommend them
I feel any gecko what has been in captivity eight or more years is the one to go for. I personally like the leopard geckos and New Caledonia geckos the most. I have a very easy going gargoyle who watches videos with me.
Cool I have 2 flying geckos super cool I love them....but they were wild caught and over time they have gotten friendlier but not handable I just enjoy looking at them and at nite they move around always jumping on the glass door of the tank they r so beautiful!
Earliest I’ve ever been! Absolutely love my garg. Don’t know if I won the lottery or what but she’s super handleable and active even when I first got her. Love their little dinosaur look.
I live in a bungalow in Koh Samui, Thailand so I have numerous geckos running around my place and I let them be for the most part. They clean up any insects for me and don't create a nuisance. However, I have one Tokay Gecko that likes my place for some reason, no matter how many times I catch her and place her outside - she always comes back. I wouldn't care but she does leave some large poops lying around the base of the walls. That is how I usually know she is back. I am assuming female because she is not that colorful and only barks 'Tokay!" at me when I try to catch her to release her outside. I am not sure what attracts her back inside as she seems large enough (about 9 inches) that she should fare well outside. At this point, I have considered getting a nice size terrarium to place her in but not sure yet as everywhere I view info, they are considered the most difficult gecko to have. Any thoughts on what draws her back all the time? I keep a clean place and don't have an insect problem (maybe she is why haha). Do they come in to regulate their temperature? We are a pretty consistent in the 24-32 degree range, sometimes hotter on extreme days. Also, any thoughts on getting a terrarium to house her? Great videos btw. I've watched quite a few, now.
Thank you for this video! Learned lots of new stuff!!! I have a gorgeous high end extreme harlequin male crested gecko who I am almost certain has Tokay and Nile monitor dna. Kid you not, he is psychotic. Everytime I go near his enclosure he races around it, bounces off the walls and all over the place while keeping his eyes on me and just challenges me to open the door then projectile poos on me with sharp shooting accuracy and... He bites me wherever and whenever he can plus he clamps with such extreme effort, his eyes do the frog and Tokay thing where they sink deep into his skull. Then he'll sometimes do a complete 180 and decide to be a total luv bug for a few seconds to a minute and boom, back to devil spawn. I absolutely adore him! Bad bad bad boy... Also had a Sav monitor for many many years and he was the sweetest boy. In the decade he was with me, not a single bite, tail whip, nada. Now the neighbors cat who would sneak in my yard to shred the tiny skinks and house lizards would definitely not agree to him being a good boy and tell a different story. But the stray kittens & docile cats got along fine with my boy.
I have a eurydactylodes (chameleon gecko) and they absolutely do look like little crocodiles, especially the way they walk on flat surfaces. I have a gap at the top of my cork bark background and kouda always does laps along the top atleast a couple times an e evening. They stomp around just like crocodiles
Hey Adam, awesome video! Oh man I knew the tokay geckos were coming but it didn't make it any less hard to hear :( I had zero issue taming out my ladies (my first round of babies I produced, I couldn't let either of them go lol) and even my adult long term captive WC female is a sweetheart. My male isn't mean he's just a little more flighty. Yes it's a lot of work and you will take bites and I suppose the point here is that that can be intimidating for people, but if you get captive bred hatchlings the bites aren't going to be anything to worry about and by the time they're big enough to draw blood they should be relatively tame, at least in my experience. Totally understand their placement on the list but I had to jump in to defend my favourite animals! Keep up the awesome work! - Charlotte
No lizards in my life due to space issues... but someday, if I got my cats a gecko to watch (from a safe distance, I've kept pocket pets & multiple aquariums alongside my cats & the cats always have a healthy respect for the captive critters) I'd definitely want one that thrives on a prepared diet for my own convenience but also one that's more hardy & robust. I think Crested Geckos are beyond adorable. How doesn't love their little faces? And I figure they're popular for a reason. If I ever do get one, I'd name her Maybelline. I wouldn't be able to resist given the lashes.
Ok I'm new to your channel and I love your content. Plus you're really easy on the eyes. 😉 I'm 50 and I'm excited I'll be getting my first reptile soon. Lol I'm kinda late in the game. I've always loved reptiles. I've decided on a leopard gecko. So I'm doing research first. Anyways I'm trying to figure out how to pay $1 a month. Do you happen have a video showing the best way to set up heating. I have 29 gallon aquarium I'm going to set up for my new dudes home. One last thing how do you feel about Bio Dudes substrate?
Hi I need help my garygole is bitting me a bit when he does it there are usually no sighs of distress and I’ve been feeding him the right amount of food I don’t know his tail doesn’t move when I hold him and he has became more friendly after he bite me he now lets me touch him which he wouldn’t do before and he’s been climbing my arm he tried to do it today he was climbing on my and he got to my shoulder where I couldn’t see him so I picked him up no where bad like it’s tail Justs it’s tummy as if he would jump he would most likely die it could be that I just got a cat and he can smell the cat fur on my hand or it could be wanting to mate
Try not to wiggle your fingers infront of his face, he likely smells food on you. even if you feed him enough they’ll still try to hunt. When picking them up try to ‘scoop’ them rather than grab from above, place your fingers behind their front legs. They will naturally climb, so yes, if you let him he will end up on your shoulder, he doesn’t want to mate with you. Is his tail regenerated (could have dropped before you had him. if you see a ‘seam’ anywhere on the tail where his body pattern stops and it becomes random, that random patterned parts are likely regenerated)? Regenerated tails aren’t as articulated and tend to not curl around fingers and such as they don’t have bones, just cartilage.
I LOVE lechie Geckos! this is my dream reptile to keep! Second one are madagascar day geckos! thanks for your videos. you where one of the people for my crested gecko research! I own a fantastic crestie girl since last year september
Serious question, Adam.... Being that the African Geckos are, basically, from the same region, can they be cohabbed, with a Ball Python? Of course, I'd have them in a large terrarium/vivarium, with all the necessaries.
Yo wtf Adam, banded geckos are great pets! At least in my experience, they're super curious and interactive, and are really fun to watch at night. They do exist captive bred, and are imo hardier than leos due to their tolerance for temperature swings and humidity drops. Theyre also tiny, making them great small-space pets.
Keeping mainly tokays, but also leachies, the attitude between the two is almost paralleled lol the only difference is that tokays are just way more agile.
I have a flying gecko, and he is an a##hole. He bites every time I take him out of his tank. He escaped once and found his way up to the ceiling. He glided down and landed on my bf's lap. Scared the crap out of us. Cool animal, and he likes to taunt the cat.
I'm in central Florida and have wild house geckos in my home. Since thet showed up about 15 years ago, I haven't seen a single Asian cockroach and the wolf spider population is much reduced.. They're not pets but I love them!!
Lichies are great tokays even better just my opinion, definitely ain't for anyone and you gotta take a death roll at first but then they just jumps from arm to arm incredible, plus the skin on them soo thin smooth mmmh I love them 😂
I got african banded gecko and she is really beautiful. I love this species of gecko. I have had dune geckos for past 6 years and they are fun species to play with but u don't keep them on just sand they actually need an enclosures where it's half sand and half eco earth they need moisture too they seem the thrive better this way they also love live plants in their tanks as well
Tokay Geckos are invasive her in Florida, theyre really beautiful and i want one so bad but everything he said is true. They really arent worth the trouble, despite how amazing they look
Best geckos- Cresties and AFTs!!! I am speaking as an extremely biased mother of a male crestie and a female AFT. I hear a lot about cresties dropping their tails, but I've had mine for 2 years and he's shown no fear of anything. He's a bit bigger than the average crestie, so maybe that's why he's tough lol. My AFT I've had for only a year, and she is more shy, but she's extremely cute. If you want a gecko who will be very active and curious when out of his terrarium, I'd say crestie. If you want a gecko who's more laid back unless she's eating, get an AFT.
Bro you say something I really hate!!! I use to say it about myself!!! Your a very smart person!!!! Look what you have accomplished!!!!! A dumb person could never do that! U got a popular RU-vid channel, you work for yourself, and you doing what you love, you share what you know, and as embarrassing as it can be, you admit when you did something wrong, and last but least and your open to advice!!!! That my friend is a very highly educated person!!! A dumb person is someone who thinks they know everything !!!! Stop calling yourself dumb
Even working with leachies.... Theyre still gonna be cage defensive as adults. once they start laying theyre gonna be protecting the eggs. you may get lucky, but GTs are def gonna be the worst.
