The 7 reasons brand new riders crash

One of the many lessons from Twist of the Wrist is how Survival Reactions lead us to doing things that reduce the stability of our motorcycle's, which is why they are the most common reason for a crash. I talk about the basics of motorcycle stability, why the 7 SR's cause instability, and how to train yourself out of doing them.
Oh, and I wanted to talk about breaking in a corner.

Haven't crashed on the road, but at home when I first got my bike. I was waddling it through my back yard on slight decline, gained a little more speed than I'd've liked, I grabbed a fistfull of brake and dropped it in the dirt 😅

Yaazzz, I was once a victim of "SR7". It was a dark and stormy night...wait, wrong story. Ok, first off, I broke BOTH of my cardinal rules: 1)ATGATT and 2)never loan out your scoot or borrow someone else's. Given that, I had just entered a corner WAY too fast and knew it right about when I was close to mid-corner. Sooo, what did I do? I grabbed some front brake, scoot slid out like it was on ice, and I wound up in the ER. Broke my left collar bone and left foot, have a skin graft on my left forearm, and shredded my left hand, knee, and foot. I was not an inexperienced rider, just wasn't paying attention. There was some good came of it! They totalled my friend's bike, he totally rebuilt it as a custom, and won 1st place/best of show in several shows. Oh, it didn't help that he was around 6'4" and I am a whopping 5'5" on a good day...the bike was NOT set up for a short rider. And I don't care what anyone else thinks, love your flags.

I think it's really cool how similar horseback riding is to biking! Using your core and legs to maintain your position instead of your arms, unconsciously moving towards where you're looking, death-gripping the reins/ handles when you're falling, letting the horse/ bike do its own thing to rebalance itself, etc!!
@skylarp8689
@skylarp8689 11 месяцев назад
When I took the MSF course, I felt the same exact way. I did horse riding for 5 years and could apply everything I learned to it! Even going over bumps, our class was advised to stand on the bike much like doing hurdles on a horse. Best advice is to look where you want to go; super uncomfortable at first because you want to look at the hazard, but it works!

Braking mid-turn is fine, but it becomes extra important to do it right (gradually adding brake pressure). The idea that the bike stands up when you brake mid-corner, it's easy to prevent that by practicing in a safe environment. Practicing braking is very important, if we don't practice, then we're not likely to get it right in an emergency situation.

On SR2 part, I ever experienced very scary tank slap three times. My bike was modern classic bike Kawasaki w175, but it got mods to make it able stable cornering and high speed. I remember when I was testing how much top speed after modify the engine (not too extreme) and change new CDI. Back in stock version, it reached 90 km/h. After modify it it got 140 km/h. Around 120 km/h on very bumpy but very long straight road. it starts wobbles a lot. So I just release the handlebar and lean the body backward a little. I know that it got wobble cuz I didn't change the whole front fork with better one, so my friend and I modify it.

Hey! Coach, racer, advanced TD rider, and 15 years street riding. Great video! Well presented BUT Twist of the Wrist has some shortcomings especially when it comes to mid-corner braking and contact patch management. Check out and critically think about Yamaha Champion's Riding School (YCRS) and what they have to say about it and try it out for yourself. Consider especially the videos: 100 Points of Grip and R=MPH. I used to be a Twist advocate but some of the advice falls apart when it comes to mid-corner maneuvering and stopping yourself from going wide. Twist has some really good advice for how to go fast around a track but their street advice isn't so good. Whereas YCRS has advice for going fast around a track & safer around the street.

I highly suggest everyone takes champ U which is a online course from Yamaha champions riding school. They dispel that myth that braking while cornering stands the bike up. Being on the brakes actually tightens your cornering radius which insures you won’t run wide. It’s a myth that started from riders that were abrupt with their brakes. Great video btw lots of good info!

This is wonderful my dude. But for the last segment i want to mention trail braking. It is something i picked up last year (my 2nd year of riding) because i ride 80's sports bikes. It is slightly pre-loading the front tyre and suspension by applying light front braking just before entering a turn and keeping it all throughout until you are ready for the exit zoomies. This does the first half of the safe braking method for you, allowing you to take away a lot of speed, much faster and safer than if you panic grip. It also ever so slightly shortens the wheelbase and helps in tightening a turn. Though you might need to swap pads every season because of it. I honestly don't know if it is just because i am becoming a better(slower?) rider or it was this method that helped me, but i have had fewer "scary" corners since i started practicing it.

I have a question, if my bike has ABS do i need to do light-heavy-light braking? the advice that ive gotten is that as long as i have ABS in an emergency situation i can pretty much grab as much brake as possible to stop
@SquidTips
@SquidTips Год назад
Think of ABS as an Emergency Stop safety feature that reduces the chances you’ll lose traction entirely at the front end, because that is all it does. It can’t stop you from hammering your front and endo’ing if you do it hard enough. If you brake in the corner hard it can’t stop you from losing balance and low-siding. Its not going to save you if are riding too fast for a situation and slam into the back of a car. You definitely still need to practice and build good braking habits because ABS doesn’t change the overall physics of how a bike operates, and our need to minimize the destabilizing effects of weight shifting rapidly.

Thanks for the new video. But weather and road conditions and other road users account for more vehicle collisions I believe. I find leaving clutch engaged keeps better stability during braking (until stall) due to the rotational inertia of the crankshaft, pulling in the clutch at the end. Again, thanks for the awesome video, will heed the advice.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips 2 года назад
Bad weather is a challenge that impacts crashes, for sure, but it’s hard for me to imagine bad conditions being more common than inexperienced riders making panicked errors. Think about what causes a rider to go down in the rain; Is it that they were riding with perfect technique, but somehow the conditions caused them to go down, or is it that they had poor technique that was amplified by poor conditions?
@JohnnyQPublic001
@JohnnyQPublic001 2 года назад
Statistically, failing to negotiate a turn is the most common wreck. With fatality, you're looking at a returning rider on a machine over 1300cc's not wearing a helmet riding drunk failing to negotiate a turn. That's the lion's share of wrecks.
@larsinthefuture
@larsinthefuture Год назад
Sorry for the late response, being a 125/250cc rider and DoorDashing in the suburbs and city, my only two near-vehicular collisions have been due to rain and a parking lot corner entrance, and an oil patch around a corner uplifted from the previous day's rain. The first one is the reason I try not to ride in 0.2≤mm_rain≤0.8 conditions in the forecast, I don't have ABS and it is really easy to slip during those conditions, heavy rain is much safer. Second one I learned I need to pay attention to the previous day's weather. Also, I visited Seattle two weeks ago, which is your favourite overpass/tunnel to rev under? I found just before the Alaska Way Truck Route, heading South from Pike Place has a very nice overpass for echo. Must suck to be in Seattle though, most of the restaurant chains I visited had "Labour shortages" and restricted only to drive through. Otherwise, nice city, but the I5 is too bumpy and has too many wheel crevasses from construction. Thanks.

Not hovering your finger on the front brake at all times increases the risk of collision in an emergency. It takes time for your fingers to go to the brake in a sudden emergency. Always apply the rear brake with the front to equal the contact patch or spread the load evenly. Calm at all times, shoulders down and relaxed. As a beginner learner these tips have ingrained in my brain its a habit now.

I am not saying that those other guys can offer something of value.There is a lot of riders like yourself who really and deeply undertsand Keith's core motorcycle control concepts. If you distill what Keith Code teaches and really understand the physics of an bike, it just renders all this other stuff from a lot of those other Motorcycle RU-vid bloggers, as not necessary to watch. There is nothing wrong with putting load on the front tire, it was designed to take a heavy load under brake pressure. Wether you’re in a car or a bike, rear brake front brake or engine braking, this will load the front tires by shifting weight forward. This is not something to fear but what your bike was designed for.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips Год назад
I mean…. There is a problem if you exceed traction
@mhoeij
@mhoeij 10 месяцев назад
@@SquidTips I don't think your advice is based on experimental evidence. On a clean dry road you probably can't lock your front tire even if you tried with the ABS turned off. It'll have so much traction that the rear wheel will lift before the front locks. I did try this, and the only time I could get the front to lock is when the tire was on pavement that wasn't completely clean, and even then, I'd have to brake *extremely* abruptly to lock the front. This is because once the weight moves forward, the forks compress and the contact patch of the front wheel grows, then at that point it's basically impossible to lock the front, so the only way to lock the front is to brake super hard extremely abruptly, and even then, my tire needed to be on a dirtier patch of the road to get it to lock. Based on these experiments, I feel that fearing the front brake (say in a turn) is poor advice, unless the rider panics and brakes extremely abruptly, it isn't going to lock. The advice from Keith Code is based on tires from the previous millenium.

The RU-vid Shorts algorithm FINALLY did me a favor today by bringing me here, instead of forcefeeding me inflammatory misogynistic bile. Hard to find anything for me out there as a transmasc biker with no interest in being an obnoxious asshole on the road. Driving cars actually makes me WAY more anxious than a bike. I used to ride horses. The feeling has some similarities. You're a lot more in touch with your surroundings and the road, and of course, the active balancing. You feel a lot more in control. Even some riding techniques work on a bike. I'm not just inside a giant box trying not to hit anything outside that box. It's a nightmare. I'm not really a thrill rider. Perhaps I'm more of a mindful rider.
@falcodog2917
@falcodog2917 Год назад
I feel the same way about driving a car vs riding. You take up a lot less space on a bike and you have many more options to avoid danger. I've also always thought the comparison to horseback riding is a good one because I use my knees and legs a lot when I ride. I've been on bikes for 50 yrs and the best advise I can give to any road rider is to get a dirt bike and learn how to read the trail (road), slide with confidence and use your legs to control the bike. I still ride my dirt bike to keep myself sharp and in good shape.

As the Isle of man proves every time they run it, there is no skill set high enough to ride a supersport fast on a street without eventually dying from it, usually spectacularly and with body parts over a wide area. To be clear: Tire Contact Patch Size and Tire Traction or grip are NOT related... (1:33) Friction index between that of the tire/road and the force of the connection are related. Again, surface area or contact patch size are not. The reason that rear tires tend to be larger than front is primarily two-fold: 1. Rear tire wears faster. 2. Larger rear tire looks cooler. Take the first gen Yamaha R1. Did it need such a large/wide rear tire? No it did not.
@JunkCCCP
@JunkCCCP Год назад
This is possibly one of the most brain dead statements I've ever read. If contact patch didn't matter we'd all be riding on bicycle tires. But no, mopeds have skinny tires and liter bikes have wide tires. Weird how that is.
@TriAngles3D
@TriAngles3D Год назад
@@JunkCCCP The mechanics of wider tires leads to higher traction/slippage ratio in corners. The size of the contact patch is relatively consistent for same tire pressure and rubber materials when subjected to the same load. Contact patch size matters less. It is much more about the Shape and rotation origin position of that contact patch which together impact the degree of "slippage" in that patch. Skinny bicycle tire VS the same rubber on a 190-section sportbike tire? If the load and the materials are the same then the friction is the same! Again, strictly speaking, the contact patch size plays NO role in this equation. But the skinny tire will tear itself up on a 400+ pound sportsbike. So how do we combat this? ...Wider Tires. We add more rubber, greater bulk, better shock absorption, heat transfer and carcass strength. All increase wear time and lead to more consistent, longer lasting tire performance. But there is a limit. Wider tires require greater lean angles and suffer from more unsprung mass. These neg impact net traction. You have to find the sweet-spot.
