Good day to you all! On todays video I discuss the upcoming A500 Mini console and talk about the first 25 games I'll be adding via WHDLoad, a feature of the console!
Introducing THEA500 Mini, a compact reimagining of the Amiga 500 home computer. Featuring perfect emulation of not only the original A500 but also the Advanced Graphics Architecture (AGA) of the A1200.
Play one of the included 25 classic Amiga games, selected from a simple to use carousel, including all-time greats like Alien Breed, Another World, Chaos Engine, Simon the Sorcerer and Worms.

I really enjoyed the video, but I won't be getting one. I don't really see the point of it, for me. I could see it being a stocking filler type present for someone like the snes mini. For some one who is already into the Amiga but does not have one a pimiga seems like a better option. Its far more flexible in what it can do, has support for every input device under the sun, and has full networking support. You can also get amiga shaped cases for the pi too.

My personal choice - Benefactor - puzzle action with the charm of Lemmings. Moonstone - a game that when I start playing, I have to finish. Definitely the Turrican series. An A500 mini without Turrican is like a Sega Mini without Sonic.

@@YouveBeenGamed If you've ever played Cinemawares Wings its a bit like the dogfight sections in it, if it were expanded to a huge open campaign and given more 'realistic' flight physics. Highly recommended. I especially liked how in the campaign, which begins at the start of the War new planes for both sides enter the war and become available as they historically became available. Its got a lot of nice touches like that, such as being able to challenge the opposing Aces.

I owned the Amiga 500 as a kid and still regard the Amiga as my best gaming years. I'm just hoping that we aren't restricted on what games we can add through licensing or whatever, and I just hope it is easy to add games. Like yourself I've no clue and hope they will give a tutorial bcos there are so many titles I want to add

I don't think we'll be restricted. We weren't on The C64, as far as I know anyway. I guess every system is different potentially. I still play games on my Amiga all the time. So many memories... Cool list you gave there too. Paperboy and James Pond nearly made the cut for me too! Thanks for watching

It's extremely easy to add whatever games you want on a USB thumbdrive. I've got Cannon Fodder, Monkey Island 1&2, Silkworm, Rainbow Islands, Turrican 1&2, Uridium, Simon the Sorcerer, SWOS 2020, and dozens of others.

Brought back alot of childhood memories, cannon fodder and wings were two of my favourites, so many games back then, jaguar xj220 used to love, monkey Island, my parents used to play a game called heart of China, definitely gonna look at getting one of these

As with the C64 mini, I expect the Amiga Mini will also support all usb keyboards, although probably needing a powered usb hub.

This thing actually became very interesting to me just having Paradroid 90 and Alien Breed on there... I never owned a 500 as a kid (uncle had one which I was allowed to play sometimes) so I really hope this is good.

Great video mate. Re why they didn't load more on from the get go is all about the legalities of licensing. If they can't get written permission from the current and legal owner of the licence (regardless of how old the game is), they can't use it in a commercial product. Even if it seems there is no legal owner anymore, well, then they can't get "written permission" and hence can't use those games either. I do note though that you said most games can be "legally purchased in WHDLoad format. I'm not sure that's 100% correct. WHDLoad software can be licenced, yes, but the games the users have shifted into the WHDLoad format, are still subject to licence as per the above. Do not pay anyone selling a collection, as they are selling those collections illegally. The games are available online (not legally no, again for the same reasons) but what's worse is anyone charging for them when they have no right to do so. I know we all wish old games were available for free, but copyright law is a funny beast that never goes away. Well, 70 years after the death of the artist is when works become public, but then you get tied up in who owns the rights to "publish". Good times :D Great video though. I'm as excited as yourself. I'll probably stick with the games pre-loaded as I have a growing collection of originals, and an A1200 with a fully loaded HDD too (yes that someone else "acquired" and installed).

Thanks mate appreciate that! I must confess I'm a little naive when it comes to the whole emulation scene, even though I've been doing it for a long time now. We all strive to do it 'legally' I guess, and there will always be people out there looking to exploit that, if you don't know what you're doing. I still own my childhood A500, and more games than I can ever remember buying! It's a very cool system to collect for, even if the discs you buy online from auction sites can be a little bit hit and miss these days!

Even in that short time I've seen prices double. Crazy times. I'm just trying to re-buy the ones I had growing up, which is fun :)

@@005AGIMA I have most of it. I must admit I have sold a few of the valuable ones over the years. Life sometimes gets in the way and you just have to sacrifice for various reasons. Trouble is retro is so in fashion now that places like Ebay become overpriced rather than the treasure troves they once were. Good luck with your collection mate

The thing that made Simon the Sorcerer so special for me was Chris Barrie's voice over for Simon (he's Arnold Rimmer in Red Dwarf). The Amiga version doesn't have speech though so I'm not sure I would play it much. Unless it's the CD32 version of course - fingers crossed!

@@YouveBeenGamed so I have my A500 Mini now and I have discovered that it's not possible to make a WHDownload version of Simon 1 with the speech, sadly. So I may just stick with ScummVM on my PC for that particular game. Going to try Beneath a Steel Sky in a minute though!

@@YouveBeenGamed Well that goes without saying, Dragons Breath had 2 manuals, one was the game, the second was the SPELLS book, its not a problem for me because i have the original manual as well as Digital (PDF). It will leave people clueless without any manual for the spells. I was a ACE at North and South. brilliant game.

Games I would have liked to add (going through my offhand memories and the Lemon Amiga top 100 list): the Turrican games, Lionheart, Moonstone, the Monkey Island games, Ambermoon (haven't played this one, just curious), the Settlers, Cannon Fodder, Pinball Fantasies, the Lotus games (particularly the second), Jaguar XJ220, Eye of the Beholder 1 and/or 2 (again, haven't played, just curious), Mega Lo Mania, IK+, Superfrog... I could probably go through Lemon Amiga's entire game list to add more. Outside of spending some time on the Mini, I haven't really used my Amiga for a loooong time, but if I learned something from even the Mini, it's that completely accessible consoles like this is a nice way to replay ALL of your old favorites. Regarding the Pool vs. Snooker thing, I'm curious as to how well known snooker is on a worldwide basis. As in I know how to play pool; the rules aren't really that complicated, which probably makes it a good deal more accessible. On the other hand, I only know very vaguely how Snooker is played, and it seems like a more challenging variant of the whole pool thing, and I'm curious if that's why a pool game was chosen over a Snooker one.

First of all I'll definitely need a step-by-step guide for adding games :-D I've always been too dumb running an Amiga emulator on my PC. My biggest wish has always been to play Supercars 2 again and it seems there's no need to add it as it's pre-installed! :-) Lemmings of cause is a must but I also like games like Globdule, the German Bundesliga Manager, Sim City or Testdrive. I'll let myself surprise what's possible with this box.

I've emulated Amiga but it can be a tricky beast. I've never got to grips with how to use WHDLoad though so a tutorial there will be crucial, if it's going to be complicated! I'm hoping personally it will just be a drag and drop onto a usb stick job! As was mentioned in a previous comment, favourite games will vary with us all, so the ability to add your own is definitely a nice touch

As you summise, it's a licensing thing. Some games are just too expensive to be cost effectively included, featuring mutiple licensors to pay (IP owners, publishers and developers). Some licensors just do not want their games on the device for various reasons. Whilst many others just do not have a clean chain of ownership. Plus of course any final choice is subjective :)

Yeah it's a shame that every game can't be included but it's totally understandable. That's why having the WHDLoad facility is great, and pretty crucial really as if people only find one or two games they're interested in on the official list then it would put them off buying this massively

The Amiga was a dream playground for licensed games (Ocean being the main culprit, I guess). A lot of my fav A500 games were licensed games or coin-op conversions. Desert Strike should've been there, the Amiga version is the best version. I also have odd favorites like the one-button A500 version of Mortal Kombat, or the Amiga version of Jurassic Park. Even Syndicate - I loved that game even though the PC version is way superior. DreamWeb (1994) for sure, Midnight Resistance (1989), Dragon Ninja...

Sensible Soccer is on there unless you prefer the original which is perfectly valid! Turrican 2 made the second list. Its hard though to limit things. So many good games!

I wish the scaling was 1080p If it had that I would buy one. 720p scaling is horrible on it. I emulate the Amiga at 4k scaling on a 4K TV. Looks brilliant.

I can play all these and a whole lot more on my Rpi 400 running PImiga but I am still getting this lil beastie and looking forward to adding my own favourites, like Flood, Turrican, James Pond, Dungeon Master, Shadow of the Beast, Blood Money and then like you say there are all the Cinema Ware games and the Sierra titles like Project iceman and "So you want to be a Hero" Kings Quest series etc, the problem will be deciding which ones to leave out.

You get the base 25 games and then you're free to add additional games via WHDLoad and a USB stick. Hopefully they will release a guide on how to do this

This Cinemawaregames are a pure graphic hightlight back in time. Big Problem was copy protection from some games, loading times, and some games are not fast enough. And thats the problem i ve with this Mini A 500, some real good games are good but has sometimes less than 10 fps ;) If they fix this or emulate enough speed to make these games playable it would be okay to buy this Mini A 500. Faery Tale Adventure was a nice game, monsters are possible overpowered but i rememeber an ride on a turtle in this game ? Golden Axe would be nice too for this Mini A 500 ;)

Love me some Cinemaware as you xan tell from my lists! I'm not sure what they will do re frame rates to be honest. I'm sure games will run great though. Yeah Faery Tale was TOUGH! Loved the game but never got that far. Thanks for your comment

I'm not 100% sure, but I would certainly suspect it will be akin to a Raspberry Pi in terms of emulation. I'm not sure if they have officially said that anywhere mind you

Most of the games are really good. I am looking forward this machine, especially if I can play Total Chaos on it :-) Alien Breed is a fantastic game, but Alien Breed 3D? Small screen, low quality textures... I was not impressed. Certainly it was not Amiga's area. Indiapolis 500, Defender of the Crown, Lemmings, Micro Machines and a lot more: they give a better gameplay, than AB 3D

I totally agree, some of the games could easily have been left off for better ones. Alien Breed 3d is a strange choice. Maybe they did a deal with Team 17 as they have so many of their games on there! Makes it even more of a mystery that Superfrog didn't make the cut though!

the only question I have is this: does this mean that we will be able to play Kick Off 2 online? despite all the graphics and gimmicks of FIFA on console, Kick Off 2 remains the greatest and most realistic football simulation to date

I'm not aware of any way to play online sadly. I know we can buy an extra gamepad and play 2 players on the console itself. I'll try and find out about online

I got the C64 full size as I did not own one it`s good, but with the Amiga there are so many ways to emulate it on many systems. I have a A500+ and a A1200. The one question that will be asked how fast it it compared to a FPGA or Raspberry Pi set up.

I have to research more on WHDLoad as I have no experience with it. However, from what I gather, all discs are included in the one lha file, so I think disc swapping is automatic. Again, I need to read up a little more on this. I'm planning a video nearer release

I would imagine you can use the joystick that comes with any of their other consoles if you have one? I agree using a pad on an Amiga will be a bit of a different experience

I've read on an Amiga forum that Retro Games apparently haven't asked for permission to use WHDload from its original creator. I hope this doesn't affect anything regarding the use of the mini, bcos without it I'll be cancelling my pre order

If this is true and they get denied then this is a major cock up as all the packaging we've seen so far has a sign on it saying you can add via WHDLoad. Talk about jumping the gun. I suspect it's not true for that reason alone. I know the development team have already received their consoles as one of them posted it on Facebook. If I can find that post I might ask the question!

@@YouveBeenGamed it was on a commodore amiga Facebook group which had a link to an Amiga forum. As of Dec, the owner hadn't heard anything from Retro asking to use his creation. I can send you the link if you want. I'm sure it'll get resolved, it'll be one heck of a failed launch if they couldn't implement it

Somebody praised the inclusion of WHDLoad and the the next post said they had no licensing for it. Retro Games Ltd then commented back with "Everything we do is fully licensed, have no fear". So it looks like everything should be fine! Phew

A working keyboard is not as big of a deal with the Amiga as it is with the C64. Because the C64 has a keyboard with those special symbols it's not the best solution to use a PC keyboard. With the Amiga this is not an issue as it does not have any special symbols only a few unique keys which are easily remapped to a PC keyboard.

@@YouveBeenGamed One of the big benefits of an emulator based system like this VS real hardware or FPGA solutions is savestates. For me at least. On my TheC64 I use this feature alot. And it's so easy to use with the customized TheC64 joystick and custom UI/menu system.

@@Galahadfairlight I thought it was Activision that had the copyrights but you are right, code masters and EA owns them. Anyway, they don't need to put games on it if you can put them yourself. But they could have a virtual shop where we could buy the games CHEAP, of course. :) I wouldn't mind buying the games if they were cheap.
