Cinemas Lost Forever

This is the longest video I have done to date - so much info on this cinema with a rich, almost 100 year history. The cinema closed too soon so that a new multiplex nearby would garner all of it's trade. Long history, lots of stories from staff and others. A fitting tribute I think

The Carlton, Rio, ABC, the Raith and that's only four of them. It was great wondering which one to go to. Great times and still missed.

remember going there often as a kid, shame its ruined now, but its the way all cinemas are going sadly.... shame too, because in my mind, the solution to save the ones still in existence is quite simple, don't price yourselves out the market! if i were the manager in one of these i would make every seat, in every showing of every film £3, a full auditorium paying £3 each is far more lucrative than 8 people in a movie paying £10 or more each (and half of those are only there because of some deal on their phone contract or car insurance meerkat etc)...and crucially...the food and beverage sensibly priced, small profits on each seat/drink/sweety/hotdog/popcorn, will sell many times faster and this makes a trip to the cinema affordable for all, regularly, not just now and again

ABC once held a Managers' Meeting there. I remember three of us from the North East viz: Norman Cully (ABC Sunderland) , George Skelton (ABC Darlington) and Yours Truly (ABC Newcastle) travelling by train. I think that was the last time I went across the Forth Bridge. All Scottish Managers greeted us at Kirkcaldy including good friend John Ferrari, GM of ABC Edinburgh. ABC Kirkcaldy Manager, Douglas Adams made Zone Manager, Lionel Johnson and the rest of us all very welcome and I recall that we had a wonderful lunch on the circle foyer with various staff (including the Chief Projectionist!) waiting on. One of my happiest memories of this era before things were to change entirely - not for the better, sadly........

Great video, very sad watching what happened to the building considering it was a listed building. Yes, shame on Odeon if its true what they did. It was like a plot to get rid of the place. ABC's were my favourite of all the chains here in the UK!!

I must say I thought that in general the ABC triples were better thought out than Odeons, which could be a bit 'boxey' and soul less. Thanks for your kind comments
