Salmon become pink at the end of their lifespan as they travel upstream in a Salmon Run. When it comes time to mate, they expend all of their energy into fighting that contorts their anatomy to be monsterous and red. After they mate, they then wither away and look like zombies before passing. I presume that's the origin for Basculegion.
@@acehealer4212 morgan freeman the narrator:"and then the proud salmon fullfills its destiny to an orgy relationship and fight for its remaining days the end"
Living by these rivers is nauseating during and after mating season though for everyone else. Barf. I lived next to Chico Creek (Washington) in some apartments and every fall it was super gross for a few weeks. The smell just wafted everywhere.
I wonder if lockstin will ever make a tier list of pokemon design from less to most inspired(like, he already spent 5 hours ranking spinda patterns) e.g. Copperajah has a lot of inspirations from copper turning green and indian culture in the UK while rattata is just some rat
In German, Wyrdeer is called "Damythir". The name pulls from Damhirsch (German for the European fallow deer) and mythisch (mythical). Basculegion in German is calles "Salmagnis". This name pulls from Salmon and magnus, meaning big. Just a side note.
In the new Games... Wheres the Regional-Forms that FIX Evolution-Lines and/or give Credit to Pokemon who Need it? Yaaaa knooow: The Options that Regional Forms give? What about Skitty, who could need more Forms, including an Evolution where it does not lose its Cuteness?! Where is that? What about Dunsparce, which is on Fan's List for a new Evolution for Ages?
@@slevinchannel7589I like to think that Dunsparce had an evolution in the past, but over the years it got too stupid to evolve. But I agree, some Pokémon deserve new evolutions or regional forms or even both.
@@TheLuckOfTheClaws Literally every single civilization in the past commited genocides Get off your high horse lol, americans aren't special for doing that
Another possible (albeit very unlikely) inspiration for Basculegion is Legion, a collection of demons from the Bible who possessed a man and drove him to madness. Jesus expelled the demons from the mans body, but spared Legion instead of destroying them. And Basculegion is possessed as well, though by souls instead of demons. Again, it's prolly not the case but it's an interesting idea imo.
@@cursedGalataea I can't tell if this is an attempt to educate people who don't know what a legion is, or to educate me specifically because you assumed I didn't know that's where the name came from. The internet has blurred the line between genuineness and passive-aggressiveness for me, so I can't tell anymore.
Oh! This actually made me think of something. What if the Blue Basculine evolves into something else other than Basculegion? Maybe that’s why we didn't see it in the trailer.
Another interesting thing for Basculegion; trout, another type of fish that swim up stream, are so incredibly streamlined that their bodies will naturally 'swim' when they are placed in moving water - even if they are dead. Like there's no motor control; the mechanics of their body just interact with vortexes in the stream in such a way that it sends ripples down the body and keep it stable.
The excitement in my eyes when you said Growlithe could evolve into a wolf-like Pokémon. Arcanine is my favourite Pokémon and wolf is my favourite animal, I would literally die if that happened!
Honestly, I can totally imagine the hisuian growlithe needing to level up with another growlithe in the party and both of them joining and evolving into a two headed arcanine
Legion is also a common monster in games like Castlevania where it’s a collection of dead souls who have fused into one. The Bleach manga also had a similar thing with its giant hollows. Also InuYasha had a demon jar where Naraku collected 100 demons with the idea that they’ll fight until only one is left, which will inherit the powers of all the others.

@@slevinchannel7589 I feel this boils down to "the Pokémon I like didn't get new forms" which, I can't tell you not to be upset about, but at the end of the day is pretty subjective
You forgot to mention the fact that Basculegion has a mustache who looks like the mustaches commonly seen in Captains, Legion Generals, and Commanders.
Oh yeah, one of the more famous examples being Ambrose Burnside, an American (Union) general in the American Civil War, and governor.of the state of Rhode Island.
Other inspirations for Hisuian Growlithe are the old sprites of Growlithe and Arcanine where their fur was more "round" (similar to Hisuian Growlithe) and also one of the desings of the beta pre-evolution of Growlithe had a horn on his head. Probably Hisuian Arcanine will look like to that beta-mon that presumably was going to be an evolution of Arcanine back in gen 2 games
Surprised ya didn't mention the reference to the Bible with basculegion. It's got the spirits of many other basculin in it, "I am legion for we are many"
Why is that sad? Raising the question as to why they don’t exist in our time period is an excellent question, and one that should be somewhat addressed by gamefreak. For continuity reasons.
@@pokemonftw3652 it's sad because people aren't thinking clearly. It's so obvious that these variants eventually became extinct as time went on. Hence why they weren't even mentioned in the DP remakes(obviously they'll probs get there through pokemon Home). Though a more clear explanation is that majority asking these types of questions are kids. Like, which adult wouldn't get the the deal with the hisuian variants.
@@AoiFlame02 I see what you mean. I’m aware. However, by that I mean what reason EXACTLY did they become extinct. We know they’re extinct, but why? That’s the question. Just saying “they’re extinct” isn’t enough.
The ancient Sinnoh are mere relics and copy the Zonai tribe from breath of the wild, ancient sinnoh was featured in the jewel of Arceus movie, though this is the frontier era of foundation, less the wild and more wild west shortly after the spiritual age and after the renaissance than just late middle ages.

There's a lot of connections to Russia with these new pokemon, I kind of wonder if it's a Hint to the next Generation having a lot of Russian mythology and influence?
I personally think that if there were to ever be a region with double the amount of gyms or even a gym for every type, I'd be Russia~ Russia's big enough and could be an opportunity to expand on the minor league gyms thing that Galar introduced, by having a bunch of optional gyms that you could go to mid story for grinding and unlocking some other minor things~
It might just be because the colonization of Hokkaido had Russia looming as a threat in the Japanese consciousness. I just think it would be super cool if we started getting regions we haven't seen yet referenced by name, and so "Russia" keeps getting referenced, even if we're not going there next gen. It would help the world feel bigger.
Some additional comments about the origins: Basculegion could also be referencing the Biblical story of the set of demons that possessed a man called Legion (Mark 5:1-13) Also Hisuian Growlithe with its insulating fur but also being rock type could be a reference to asbestos which was formerly used as an insulator, but is no longer (as another reason for it no longer being around)
"Lockstin is totally gonna explain the biblical reference in Basculegion's name" - Me before watching the video... What the heck Lockstin? Legion? as in we are Legion? The multiple demon/spirits that Jesus cast into a field of pigs that drowned themselves?
I was also confused when he didn't mention it, but it could be because Christianity just isn't that big in that are of the world so it probably wasn't an influence? Idk
@@wesgransbury2132 i think they might do legends: kyurem next. we have not seen kyurems whole form yet, and it would be a great addition for a gen 5 anniversary. assuming it will be announced in like 3 years so it can be its 15th anniversary
Yo, imagine the final evolutions of the 3 starters becoming more "Hisuian", because you raise them in that region. Decidueye would get Grass/Flying and be a more pronounced archer (maybe ditching the cloak), Samurott would be Water/Dark (or fighting), stand up and have his shell swords out, and maybe Typhlosion would get Fire/Dark(or fighting) and get a kabuto-style helmet on their head
Even if the Hisuian forms are most likely extinct, they could've hidden themselves or travel far from humans and maybe in the Diamond and Pearl remakes or future games the player can search for secret habitats or environments.
I can totally see them being rare, but still findable in the underground of BDSP. May have specific methods of evolution too to further explain their rarity.
Crazy, Japan’s government in 2008 (I believe) recognized the Ainu culture. I remember when I was still living in Japan, it really wasn’t a big deal. But now it’s huge according to all of my family and friends back home.To have all of these references, it’s charming and a good nod for a long forget people
I love your lore videos like these! I get to learn about where the inspiration of Pokémon come from and other cultures and the same time. You could say it keeps my Noggin growing
That russian furry hat is also called "ushanka", most specificaly, the one with the ear flaps. also, Hokaido Wolfs remind me of "Wolf Children", and that makes me sad :(
About the Shiisa and Komainu: they're slightly different. Shiisa is specifically in Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands while the Komainu are in the other parts of Japan.
These are some seriously cool connections! I love how everything comes together with multiple facets with the more modern Pokemon. I'm curious to see if your Hisuian Growlithe evolution theory is correct, and I am hoping that it is.
Dude, you're a talented speaker/ talker. Anyone else told you that?? You capture attention. Were you a teacher at one point?? Keep up the good work! 👍🏼👍🏼
Man oh man, as a Westerner, I feel so humbled and enlightened to learn more and more of Japan and ancient myths in general. Keep it up Lockstin, your research is so great and well fined, I have learned so much from your channel. Keep it up!
I've been wondering if that was foreshadowing of a Russia inspired region being next, it's unlikely but they do tend to foreshadow a new region in SOME way (like the sideways galar painting in Alola if I remember correctly)
Oh yeah, give me more and more Indigenous pokemon, I was always mildly troubled by the Shinto gods being the pokemon for Hokkaido, it always felt a little bit like erasure, but seeing more and more Ainu influence in this region, especially when the time period lines up with further colonization efforts from Japan in the period, is nice.
The wolf-like evolution of Hisuian Growlithe could then match up with one of the other wardens who look after the special "female pokemon" of the area to match up with the Goddess.
Lockstin I don't know if you'rr gonna read this, but I have made a 2000-letter long essay with ingame "proofs" that could suggest that the Dex cut is actually in Sword and Shield's lore, and caused by Eternatus
As annoying as the amount of counterparts Unova had in comparison to largely Kanto Pokémon initially, Basculin getting its Gyarados really is such a cool thing
Please rank pokemon by design but due it by region so start with Kanto end with hisui (so far) but use the same teiist just add on to it when new pokemon come out.
I am so happy Basculin has a evolution now, I am hoping that there is still the eastern/western gimmick of the Basculin in this game, so that Basculegion has two forms.
Honestly, I feel like the rock type of Hisuian Growlithe doesn’t show too much. The horn on the head is the only reason for it, I hope Hisuian Arcanine or it’s “Alternate Evolution” is showing the rock typing more…
I love hisuian arcanine, loving it more that its normal form. However your idea for a separate evolution and it being more wolf like for all the connections you made now seems like such a massively missed opportunity.
This was the best video I've seen about old Sinnoh. Very well detailed, amazing script and impeccable research! Honestly, here in Brazil it won't be possible for me to have this game, just a matter of time. Congratulations on the video bro, success for you.
Honestly I am happy to see so much Ainu influence here, I feel in love with their culture and aesthetic from Golden Kamuy and Utawarerumono so this game is going to be amazing.
Hey here is a thought that we dnt have the info for if those 4 u mentioned is the old versions of the modern type pokemon. That does not explain how they went to the regions we originally find them in. Yes I know some pokemon like dragon/grass egg pokemon that I can't spell off the top of my head originally comes from alola. It still doesn't fully explain how pokemon travel from one region to another.
They tend to put tons of thought into designs, especially (although far from exclusively) in newer games. Whether the designs work or not? That's down to subjectivity.
Idk why but the new deer guy still looks a bit goofy imo. The big, powerful body combined with the big round nose and tired eyes just looks hilarious. Edit: typo
Basculegion’s name HAS to have some influence from the biblical “legion”. At least the localization team definitely pulled some inspiration from the tale.
It could be. But legion as a word just means many doesn't it. Idk if pokemon have ever made reference to the bible before, I don't think they want to touch that. I could be wrong though.
All of the Ainu talk reminded me that Golden Kamuy is a thing and you should watch it because that is a series that pays insane amount of attention to Ainu culture. It is also just a hilarious and pretty violent series too.
